Back 2 School: Faber Drive

Posted Fri Sep 5, 2008 10:48am PDT by Jordan Gracey in The Ten
Rockstars don't just appear, they grow up like the rest of us and unless Disney gets a hold of them at an early age, they go through all the normal motions and yes, even go to school!

Faber of Faber Drive let us in on what he remembers of school and even offers some career advice.

What is your favourite, least favourite or most embarrassing memory from high school?

I remember being in Math class and sitting close to this really cute girl named Emily. I had been sitting close to her for most of the year and in between classes I told my good buddy Bryce Zephlie that I thought she was Hot! Well, the next day we were sitting in Math class writing a test and the entire class was silent except for the odd cough or sniffle. Our math teacher, Mr. Macrimmon had just stepped out when Bryce turns to Emily and says in a super loud voice: “Faber thinks you’re Hot!" The entire class perked up, and looked at me. Emily, in front of the entire class of 25 said, “Do you?" I was so shocked and dumbfounded that I stumbled out the words: "Uh....No". That pretty much destroyed any potential I ever had of getting with my secret high school crush.

What did your guidance counselor suggest would be the best career path for you?

My Counselor actually asked me to be a peer counselor when I was in grade 10. This blew me away cuz I wasn't in any shape to counsel anyone, I was partying way too much to be in a position of counselor.

If you had a second chance at one day in high school, what day would it be?  Why?

If I had a second chance at 1 day in high school, I would definitely go back and be a lot more proud of the days that my Dad dropped me off at the front of the high school. My dad used to drop me off once in a while in his old dirty beat up work van and I always made him drop me off down the road. Now that my Father has passed away I really regret having those feelings of embarrassment towards him. My Dad taught me what love really is, and that God is good even though there is so much pain and poverty in the world. I was very fortunate to have a Dad like mine who really knew the meaning of the saying “what’s inside is what really counts".

What was your most hated class? P. E.
If you had to endure that class again or 7 seconds of anesthesia free surgery, which would you choose?
Anesthesia free surgery

Did you spend more time in detention or more time in the music room?

Definitely more time in the music room. I played clarinet, guitar, timpani, drums, and percussion. I also sang in concert choir, chamber choir and vocal jazz

Is there one song or band you hear that always reminds you of high school?

There are many, Blind Melon, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Faith No More, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, U2 to name a few

Which had more sleepless nights? High school (with cramming etc) or being out on tour?
Definitely being on tour. The one thing that really sucks about touring Canada is that 3 quarters of the year is spent in winter and the other 3 quarters is spent driving. I find it extremely hard to sleep in the van when there is a snow storm blowing and ice all over the road or trying to sleep when you are doing a 52 hour dead head drive from Toronto to Vancouver and there are moose all over the road! But once again it is a small price to pay and we do have a load of fun!

What was one of the most valuable things you learnt in school?
I love women!

If you could offer the class of 2009 any advice, what would it be?

To become a great lyricist read lots and pay attention in English. To become a great musician engulf yourself in music. To become a successful artist do both all the time and instead of partying and playing video games on weekends jam and write songs. To become successful at anything in life you will have to make a lot of sacrifices.
