Steven Tyler Discusses Injury, Remaining 19 Tour Dates Canceled

Posted Fri Aug 14, 2009 12:03am PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Stop The Presses!
Aerosmith canceled its remaining tour dates, a spokesperson for the group announced in a statement Thursday. The last stops included major cities New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit.

Doctors for Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, 61, advised him to take time off to recover from injuries he sustained last week.

On August 5, Tyler fell off the stage in Sturgis, SD during the performance of the band's "Love in an Elevator." Steven broke his left shoulder and received 20 stitches in his head. He was airlifted to a local hospital and later taken to Boston to see his personal physicians.

Steven released a separate statement Thursday thanking everyone who has been a part of his recovery. He said the show was plagued by thunderstorms that delayed the show time, blown fuses and failed audio systems.

But these hindrances did not deter him from taking the stage. "I wasn't gonna go hide under the big top and play ‘Rock Star' and wait for everything to be fixed," Tyler said, according to AP. "I wanted to go out to the crowd to continue the show."

"I just want to say that I'm plain grateful that I didn't break my neck," he said. "In truth, after thousands of live shows, falling off the edge four times ain't too bad."

Guitarist Brad Whitford sent Steven well wishes. "Our thoughts and prayer go out to Steven for a speedy recovery and return to good health," he said in a statement.

Brad added that the group is overwhelmed by the culmination of events. "All of us here in the Aerosmith organization and all of the people who contribute to making our shows possible are in a state of shock," he said. "We never anticipated this tour coming to such a swift and unfortunate ending."

The band expressed gratitude to their fans for the "incredible ongoing support and understanding."

"Words can't express the sadness I feel for having to cancel this tour," guitarist Joe Perry said in the statement. "We hope we can get the Aerosmith machine up and running again as soon as possible. I sure am going to miss playing with ZZ Top just as I'm sure the fans are going to miss seeing them playing with us as well."

Joe also acknowledged the support of their crew. "My hat's off to our crew for putting up with this crazy stop-and-start tour," he said. "In my estimation, it was one of the best-looking and best-run tours we've ever had. Us road dawgs will meet again. May your wheels keep turning and your load-ins stay smooth."

Prior to the tour cancellation, the mysterious status of Steven's recuperation contributed to speculation regarding the future of the tour.

On Tuesday, Joe told a Detroit radio station that the band was waiting to receive an update on Steven's health. "I don't know what they (the doctors) are going to say," Joe told WCSX during a live interview. "The original diagnosis that we heard was that his shoulder blade was broken in two."

Joe added that Steven looked badly hurt the night of the incident. "When I saw him walk by he was bleeding pretty bad, but apparently he didn't do anything internally that they could find, no concussion," he explained. "He hit his head pretty bad. His back. [It was] basically [like] a bad bar fight and someone had a baseball bat."

Joe told another radio station that Steven would be "sore for a while," reported People.com. "I've seen him fall off a stage more than once," he told Chicago's 97.9 The Loop. "I've fallen off...stuff happens."

Joe has kept busy while sitting out the tour dates. Sunday he joined Jane's Addiction's closing Lollapalooza set in Chicago. Jane's Addition lead singer Perry Farrell acknowledged Steven in his introduction, saying, "Our prayers go out to Steven Tyler."

Immediately following Steven's accident, five dates in Canada were postponed.

Point of purchases will provide refunds for tickets for the remainder of the tour dates.

61 years old and still jumping around on stage ???? Kind of crazy, if you ask me. People become more fragile as they age
and should be aware of that. Aerosmith is a great band, but it's time to say bye bye. No need to suffer injuries like this just to keep your name in lights...........Steven we love you and your bandmates, but you nees to take care of you....your fans wold rather have you unhurt and healthy

2. Karen -
My thinking is...if you CAN do it, why fall back on your rocking chair? Just mark the edge of the stage a little bit better...that's all! (I've fallen off stage twice, myself!)

Nah. Aerosmith doesn't need to quit. This was just a misstep. Brian Johnson of AC/DC is nearly 62. As you know, AC/DC is also on tour. Aerosmith can, and should, continue for as long as they want, just like AC/DC is.

you are only as old as you feel . so if steven tyler is still having fun then keep on rock &rolling . god bless you & get well soon

5. Robert L -
If Mick Jagger can do it at 65 then Tyler is still great. He must have hurt himself pretty bad. So they have to cancel the rest of the dates. Knowing Aerosmith, they will make them up at some point

I am a long time Aerosmith fan, and they bring it everytime they come out on stage, I don't foresee them stopping anytime soon, they are very talented. I don't they feel or act their age. They just need to keep rocking, til they physically can't anymore

As a nurse that's seen some pretty bad injuries in her career I say to any and all musicians, use your trainers, practice and KNOW your limitations, but please KEEP on rockin! Saw Mick and Keefer in Atlanta a few years back and I have know idea how Mick does it, but he moves as well as he did in the 60's. Keefer....whatever you do, don't stop doing anything your doing now, your body would go into shock. Hope all good ole rock n rollers keep on keeping on. Steve, hope and pray for you to recover fully. Just one word of warning...at 61 the backflips are out :)

Rock, Rock, don"t ever stop, our hope and preyers are with you. Just waiting to see ya again, Billy Tyler, no kin that I know of but still great FAN

The stage should have some kind of neon lighting so this doesn't happen again to others. Steven should take it more easy at 62. He could sing but he should stop hopping around.

I am not even a rocker but Steven seems like the most awesome give it all you've got rocker - he is the real deal. Get well soon! I think you are brilliant and I am a jazz fan

ROCK ON GUYS, GOD BLESS

18. Tom -
ROCK ON STEVEN! YOUR ONLY AS OLD AS THE WOMEN YOU FEEL!

19. Steven -
He doesnt need to retire, just be a little more careful. He probably still has the mindset of a 20 year old and physically he needs to just remember he's an older guy now and falling down several feet could be very dangerous. Classic rock is so popular, the guys from these bands are going to continue in their 60's and perhaps 70's. Aerosmith hit it big again in the 90's so their popularity well justifies these tours in the 2000s. Some think they can still put out another multi platinum hit? But for sure, they aren't just a dinosaur band from the 70's on nostalgia tours.

Hes not too old yet look at Mic Jagger he's still going pretty good
