What Will Happen To Michael Jackson's Children?

Posted Fri Jun 26, 2009 2:17pm PDT by Sarah Parsons in Stop The Presses!

The death of Michael Jackson at the age of 50 has raised many questions about his health, finances, and legacy. But at the top of many people's list of questions is the fate of his three children: How are they coping, and who will get custody of them?

Debbie Rowe, a nurse who Jackson married in 1996 and divorced in 1999, is the mother of Prince Michael, 12, and Paris, 11; Prince Michael II (also known as Blanket), 7, was reportedly born to a surrogate mother, whose name has never been released.

A former Jackson attorney and family friend, Brian Oxman, told Radaronline Thursday that Katherine Jackson, Michael's mother, is the likeliest candidate to initially look after the children:

"Probably Mrs. Jackson will take care of them, she loves them dearly," Oxman said.... [The children] are currently still in L.A. and with a nanny."

Oxman later told "The Early Show":

"I suspect that the death of Michael Jackson is only the beginning of the legal battles over not only his property, but also his children."

Debbie Rowe could also make a play for Prince Michael and Paris. It is unknown if Jackson designated a guardian for the children in a will, but Rowe could claim that her care is in the best interest of her children, and head to court. E! reports:

If Rowe decides to make a bid for at least the two children she carried, she has quite a case, too....

Although many reports indicate Rowe legally waived her parental rights over the two kids after her divorce from Jackson, that decision actually was reversed by a judge. Eventually Jackson and Rowe reached a specific agreement of their own: Rowe retained parental rights and got a fat check while Jackson retained custody.

The children, who have lived at Neverland Ranch and in Ireland and Bahrain, were most often seen in public with their faces covered by veils or masks. In 2002, Jackson was highly criticized when he dangled Blanket, then an infant, over the balcony of a Berlin hotel to show him to screaming fans below.

The three children, like Michael and his siblings, will be growing up amid a blizzard of media attention. While the Jackson family is often in the spotlight for their tumultuous relationships, this may provide an opportunity for the family to heal past wounds.

Mark Lester, godfather to Jackson's children, told the "Today" show:

"The Jackson family is a very large family, and, you know, in times of need families get together and put aside all the differences."

For Yahoo to post a headline that Michael Jackson is worth more dead than alive is cruel. I bet his children don't feel that way. And I bet the person who wrote that headline wouldn't feel their father or brother or uncle was worth more dead than alive. What people have to remember, like Martin Brashir who basically killed MJ is that when God taps them on the shoulder to hold them accountable for their evil we're going to be feeling sorry for them.

A mother that hands her kids over to the Dad or anyone for a huge sum of money I do not feel is entitled to the kids. I think that perhaps she is looking to get her hands of what Michael had left...........She hadn't even been to see the kids in several years.......and this is what you call a mother.......I don't think so

I'm sorry is dead as well, but what is distressing is that her junkie son could not get clean, if not for himself at least for his mom. He was not in jail when she first announced she had cancer!! Why would Ryan say that they would be married before she died?
If he did not marry her way before the cancer, why right before her death? Insurance policy?? Thank god they did not get married though. RIP Farrah and Michael...

I live two blocks from Graumen's Theatre - Hollywood is blocked off you cant get in or out. The Star is mobbed right now and everyone is paying respects to a man who has earned our respect and love. I feel very sad about this. I hope that the music people who owe their careers to him give him a huge entertainment special where we can all enjoy his music and hear stories about the good part of this man. A Huge tragic figure. SO many sides of this..........

Any judge with good sense will give them to their birth mother. Then maybe they have a chance to have a childhood; something Michael's parents took from him......

Its horrible for the media to not have enough respect, that they dig into his past charges and debt for a story. Nobody really knows the truth to anything, but Michael was human and deserves a little respect...alive and after passing. I seriously cant believe how people act. Nobody will EVER be as big or famous as Michael Jackson was. Its all over for him, and us.

My personal opinion is that anyone who can sell out their children in return for a "fat check" should probably not have her children. She might not even care enough for them to takke care of them and just use them for her own personal gain. I think that this situation is unfortunate and hopefully these children go somewhere where they are loved and provided for and shielded from the horrible things said of their father. Regardless of what he may or may have not done, he still is their father and they should be able to remember him as they wish and not how others viewed him.

The Media is always the main Trouble in America. We should just have one news channel and one newspaper controlled by the Government, and they should decide whats to be said and whats not to be said!! Fire all the rest of the news media. Let them report to each of their buddies how they have to spend their last dollar on a donut or stand in soup lines. MJ died, give him and his family the respect that they need. Maybe you'd (news media) like a camera up your backside 24/7 to see who your doin or what your cheatin on?

97. Karmari B -
Lyk this isn't joke and you really should't joke about it because he basically changed America's culture. I really looked up 2 him and I don' feel bad for his kids becasue tey know his legacy and that he would never want them 2 hold a gruge over him, and 2 live life as best as you can. Every celebrity is joked about, but he personally was and still is the biggest celebrity ever so I blame the press 4 his bad reputation. I will always remember his good reputation, because that's what inspired me. Rest i Peace 'the' Pop King,,,,
