Why We’ll Miss Michael

Posted Tue Jun 30, 2009 4:49pm PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog

Last Sunday morning on Meet the Press, host David Gregory asked Presidential advisor David Axelrod whether or not Obama planned to make any public statement about Michael Jackson's death. Axelrod explained that the President had reached out to the Jackson family privately. What current pop star's death will merit discussion about an Oval Office response? Probably not Lady Gaga's.

There is much that will be missed about Michael Jackson, but the Axelrod/Gregory exchange made me think about something specific underlying our collective grief: MJ was the last pop star we will all share. He was the last one to garner so much genre-, race, and class-transcending popularity that it feels appropriate for his death to register as a tragedy of Presidential importance. We have lost a common bond.

Changes in the music industry will ensure that bond stays broken. Due to increased genre fragmentation, the proliferation of illegal downloading, and the ongoing extinction of brick-and-mortar record stores, music simply doesn't sell like it did during Jackson's '80s heyday. For instance, last year's biggest selling album was Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III, which moved 2.88 million copies in the U.S. Josh Groban's Noel was 2007's top seller. It sold 3.7 million. By comparison, 1982's Thriller sold 28 million copies. Five years later Bad sold eight million. 1991's Dangerous, at seven million, was considered a mild sales disappointment.

But it wasn't business that made Jackson a cross-cultural icon--it was, of course, his music. At their best (think of "Billie Jean" or "Bad"), the songs were as catchy as the flu and funkier than a Bonnaroo port-a-potty. Their playful melodies made them approachable enough for the parents while their innovative production and stealthily paranoid sentiments made them radical enough for the kids. If you didn't like Michael Jackson, the problem wasn't with him.

Now, though, with the music world splintered into different radio formats, and blogs and websites making it easier for people to burrow into the hermetic hole of stuff they already enjoy, it's hard to imagine anyone again approaching Jacksonian levels of appeal. The conditions just aren't there.

I think that's unfortunate. Having a pop star we can all watch and talk about and listen to makes music feel more vital. Michael Jackson was living proof that music meant something--to me, to you, to everyone. That proof is gone now. And now we are all living a little further apart from one another.

Michael, there are so many of us, myself included, I keep hearing that you're gone, and I know this, but in my heart you will always be here, I don't know when it will really hit me. I grew up with you and your family, and when I have to finally face this reality, it's going to be hard, and painful for me. I just hope my family will understand, I'm hanging in there though because I know you wouldn't want any thing less of me, and I know your kids and family meant the world to you, as mines do to me, I surely love all of your music and everything about you, but I always love you as a person, Michael Jackson the person, not the superstar, this world has lose a man with a heart of gold, the soul of an Angel, the mind of such thoughtfulness, and who truly care about everyone, they can write or say any thing they want about you, but you never said anything about someone that wasn't true, and the word hate wasn't in your vocabulary, no matter what people would say about you, now you're in heaven..with GOD and you will never have to hear such harsh words or cry again...Good for you...love always,,shea4u

Regarding recent comments made of late regarding probs that Michael had Sleeping. IF you sing as hard as he did and give as much as Michael did in every performance....please keep in mind he was High Energy..! Par Excellance. But when an entertainer sings as he did right in the middle of a very high energy sound system. Going home much later and trying to "Fall Asleep" can have it's difficulties. From experience I have found this to be true. Not overdoing, usually isn't as much of a problem. But excessive and long extended High Energy performing may lead to Sleep difficulties. Ok?

I have no idea about Michael Jackson's guilt in molestation of a child. It wasn't proven. Everyone has the right to think what they choose concerning Michael Jackson as a person, but none the less, he can not be denied his music and dance capabilites. He was so talented and talented like no other. Me and my generation loved Michael, had posters of him and his family. Again, the most talented person of this generation.

izigg, please try to be more respectful, even if only for the fact that it has not been long since his passing. As far as worshiping false idols goes, that may be what it looks like to you. What people are doing is just expressing their condolences and their love for him. People who worship money are much worse off than this, and besides, not all of us are religious. I, for one, am agnostic. Therefore, call it what you may. As also mentioned by electric_avenue_yeah, his guilt in the case was not proven. Do not use suppositions as facts. If you have different views on Michael Jackson and want to express your needs, please do it in a way that doesn't offend anyone.

izigg, well that is your opinion but remember nobody in this world live without sin. All of us is capable of committing sin so, it is hard to judge the person acts. We do not know in his deathbed MJ made a perfect act of contrition so, he still deserve of going heaven.

Why do people in this country always blame or mistreat the Black person? We are not the one who did slavery.

Everytime i saw Michael's dances, it made me extremely amused, by his particular movements; his moonwalking, his combing, side kicking, and throwing his cap in Billi Jean; his ghost dances with every part of his body moving, even the mouth moving with the beating of the music in Thriller; his tapping off the "dust" from his arm in Dangerous, and the like, are always creative and amusing ... I love Michael, though he didn't know me at all. And i love Janet Jackson, too. She is also great and nice...

MJ, the whole world longed to have you around with your soul-lifted music, which is more relieving and relaxing more than soft words to a troubled soul, but God said, it is time to come back home. Our consolation is that you lived a fulfilled life and your footprint cannot be easily erase while your memory will ever remain indelible in our heart. Rest on MJ!

I remember the day, that MJ was filming the Pepsi commercial. I was in the 6th grade, and I was so upset I went to my room and just cried and I prayed for his safety, and healing. The impact he made on my life as I was growing up was so amazing. His talent was unbelievable. I am very sad to see the stop of such an entertainer. I think of the space between Elvis and Michael, but with Michael and Lisa's Children, I think the world has something more coming. God will always be first and formost in my life, but I know that Michaels heart had to be in a humble state that I believe that God was there for him as he will be there for anyone else. I am giving my condolences to the family, especially {Mom and Dad} because I cant imagine losing a child. Just remember to keep God close to your heart and not only will he see you through, but he will make sure you see Michael again.
I know our 80's Generation will truly miss you Always.

MJ really affected many lives.he healed the world,he showed us that we are the world.he was a thriller,he personally rocked my world and i can't believe that MJ is gone.i think he's gone just too soon.we would never get anybody like him again and it's surprising that people still listen to his songs even till date.there is nobody that didn't know MJ.he was great alive and i think he became greater while alive.i can't just get enough from his music.the only things i want to see on TV now are his videos.i want him to come back but that is unfortunately impossible.MJ is really great.he showed us what music is.there's been no sunshine since he left and i know for sure that MJ is better on the other side.RIP
