Please Silence The Lambs---Why American Idol Is Just Plain Mean

Posted Mon Jan 12, 2009 11:45am PST by David Marchese in The Spin Blog
When the eighth season of American Idol kicks off on Tuesday, we'll finally be able to see how new judge Kara DioGuardi acquits herself to the mighty pop music machine. Will the former songwriter and producer come off as Simon Cowell's bitchy counterpart? Another Paula-like cheerleader? An analogue to whatever it is that Randy does? The mind boggles at the possibilities. But whatever route DioGuardi goes, watching her development will almost certainly be the most interesting part of the typically insufferable early-season episodes.

I don't understand why more hasn't been made about the truly mean-spirited nature of the initial weeks of every new Idol season. For each singer that gets to move on to the next stage of the competition, a half-dozen are brought on, like lambs to the slaughter, solely for viewers to laugh at. That singer is terrible! Hilarious!

Though schadenfreude is not exactly new to television, there's something particularly offensive about Idol's method of humiliation. The contestants on a show like Dancing With The Stars know long in advance that they'll be on TV. They have the time to prepare. Then, when they're on the show, they're paired with professionals. Everybody has the same shot at winning. Not so on Idol, which instead features people chosen to appear before the judges precisely because they will make for pathetic spectacle.

On top of that, these poor suckers honestly believe they are talented. Sure, hearing how some of these singers treat pitch like the plague suggests that a dollop of delusion is in play, but that doesn't lessen the callousness of the enterprise. Imagine you thought you had a special skill, some TV type said you could demonstrate that skill in front of millions, and then, when your time came, you were told you stunk. That's just cruel--and something very much like it will happen on Idol dozens of times over the next few weeks.

Who knows? DioGuardi might also feel the aforementioned situation is squirm inducing. Maybe she'll try to bestow a little dignity to the proceedings. And if not, well, let's hope karma counts for something.

Its like the ancient Roman colosuem. The masses need blood. And Idol gives it to them. As for me, I tend to stay away.

HAHAHA HHAH ohh...i guess they only air bad signers for viewers and their own entertainment...but who cares half of these people just got there cause they cant sing and to be funny on national television, and the other half just cant sing and need to hear rejection sooner or later

We can broadcast someone being humiliated and the whole world laughs, that's ok ..call a buddy a paki and the whole world calls racism calls foul..and don't try telling me there is a big diff..when words hurt there is no diff.
point here is the bleeding hearts pick and choose what they want to cry out about...i think like a lot of people feel we have bigger issues here than calling someone a Paki....

They are just plain mean because thats what the people want from the show It sell episodes
Just like the Howard Stern Show Mean, rude, arrogant and as soon as the caller in gets an edge they hang up on you as though you are trailer trash garbage. Contestents dont take it personal its Show Biz.......

I think likely the singers have some idea that they aren't so great. In fact, I think it is very likely that they exaggerate their inability just to get on t.v.

Why else would some contestants where cow suits... if they actually thought they were good.

I do agree that some are actually delusional, and its not very nice, but my guess is that before they go before the judges (and on tv) they are told that, at least to a certain extent. Public humility usually doesn't go over well and leads to lawsuits, so I am sure they are made well aware that they are the brunt of a joke.

Or they could just be actors. Reality t.v. doesnt really exist.

If the people want to be on american idol, they need to be able to take criticism. The judges are just like people in the real world, they're going to criticise you.

They know before they go on wether or not they are on for amusement or because they actually have a shot... they have to go through a bunch of other judges before they actually make it to the so-called celebrity judges

Not that I'm endorsing what they do or anything but these people know they're making fools of themselves on international television

Before going on idol... Sing into a tape recorder. Listen to it. Ask if you'd pay to listen to it a second time. No? Don't go on idol.

I have a friend that auditioned for Idol. She is one of the most talented singers that I know. She made it through a few rounds. She was excused before she made it to the celeb auditions. She sings regionally all of the time. She gets several requests for various events. She is MOUNDS better than some of the squakers I have heard on this show. They put bad people on the show to get ratings. One of you said that reality TV doesn't exsist, you are right. The executives are calling all of the shots. Another of you said don't watch it if you don't like it, I don't. I became disgusted at the games that they play with people's lives the minute I saw the people that were in front of Simon, Paula and Randy after my friend was booted. While she may not have been what they wanted they sure as heck knew that men in cow costumes and wanna be Hamlet's weren't what they wanted either. One of these days one of the truly dillusional will be broadcast thinking they are really good and get the boot along with some harsh words from Simon and a chuckle from Randy. Next thing you know it they have overdosed on valuim or taken a leap out of their fifth story hotel room because they were disgraced, humiliated and crushed. They play with peoples lives, emotions and dreams.

I am sick and tired of reality shows like American Idol and Survivor (please let it end) taking up good television channel space. I watch TV to escape. I would have to be paid to watch a reality show.

Hey 'Yahoo Music User Comment #11", we have the right to complain. This is still a free country, last time I looked plus I am paying a satellite bill and this reality crap is taking over half the GD channels.

Am I the only one that noticed those who support AI are incapable of spelling or assembling a coherent sentence?

Coincidence? I think not.

OMG!!!Slow day or is it you just have absolutely nothing else to write about? It's called entertainment...if these idiots don't realize that they suck then they should be ridiculed! You are a meathead writer with no sense of humour, you must be a blast to go to a party with.Make sure to keep your pinkie finger up when you sip your tea.

American Idol could leave all the discusting humiliating crap out of those auditions and it would be a much better show. Drop sarcastic and negative peole like Simon Cowell and the show would still be great and I would still be a big fan and watch it. The show is really about the contestants and some of the really talented and special people who make it allthe way. Look at last years top two David Archuletta and David Cook. I thoughly enjoyed both of them. I love the talent and the guts these people have to get up there and do what they do in front of millions of people - they are the show. American Idol is kind of like America itself. It's in need of a new direction.

18. YukonGold -
One doesn't need a degree to know who in the bunch has no talent whatsoever and or is mentally challenged. They find them and offer them to the viewers in all contradiction of the show's purpose. What a waste of airtime.

Gee, David, is what you are doing by writing the above, any better than what you accuse Idol of doing?
