Worst MMVA Moments

Posted Tue Jun 16, 2009 9:18am PDT by Chloe Tejada in Sound Check

This Sunday's MuchMusic Video Awards will be light in actual awards but should make up for it in celebrity high jinks and throngs of screaming teenagers. Chloe kicks off our daily look at the show with her top 5 MMVA Fails.

An award show is planned to the tee. Spur-of-the-moment shenanigans are usually plotted beforehand and the unexpected is, well, usually expected. But what producers can't control are singers who can't perform.

The MTV Music Awards may have Britney's hair-raising dud, but the MuchMusic Video Awards have had their fair share of terrible musical moments - and we love them for it. Here are our top five most cringe-worthy MMVA moments of recent years.

5. Nick Lachey
I love '90s boy bands (Backstreet Boys forever!), so I'm not picking on Nick just because he still thinks he's in one. But his cheesetastic performance of "What's Left of Me" in 2007 left me cringing. The half-hearted fist pumps and the agonizing drops to the floor made me think I was watching a tryout for a really bad teen band. Isn't Nick 30 years old?

The song is supposedly inspired by his split with Jessica Simpson, but the way he was singing it, you would think he never got a divorce. I will give him credit for singing live, but dude has to amp up his moves.

4. Girlicious
Whereas the Pussycat Dolls have killer moves, tight choreography and most importantly Nicole Scherzinger, Girlicious have...none of those. The lip-synching is expected, but does the track have to sound like it was generated by a Commodore 64?

And does the dancing have to be so uninspired? My 16-year-old cousin moves with more enthusiasm then these so-called professionals. All the girls can do is shake their money-makers. And still, the Pussycat Dolls do it so much better.

3. Fergie
From her first "la da das," you know it's going to be bad. Fergie may have great songs, but she could have used the Black Eyed Peas' help at the MMVAs in 2007. Her voice strains and cracks when she attempts the high notes, so she tries to make up for her vocal missteps by growling.

Her songs are supposed to be high energy, but she barely moves around the stage preferring to stroll and shake her hips a little. Even Britney at her worst put more effort into it.

2. Avril Lavigne Mooning
This is not technically a musical performance but a performance nonetheless. Playing off her butt crack slip from the year before, in 2003 Avril decides to show off her cheeks again with the letters MMVA emblazoned across her derriere. No one wants to see that, Avril!

Even at the height of her success, I don't think many people thought "that's hot" when she pulled down her pants. Definitely one of the most cringe-worthy moments in the award show's history.

1. Ashlee Simpson
But not even Avril's moon can outshine Ashlee Simpson's 2005 performance of "Lala", itself one of the most obnoxious songs ever written. Ashlee is off-key, out of tune, and screeches her way through the song.

On top of that, she doesn't know what to do with herself on stage, so she alternates between touching herself like an amateur stripper and gyrating on the floor. It's incredibly painful to watch, but you can't turn away from this train wreck. At least Ashlee seems to have recognized her shortcomings and has since chosen to focus on non-musical pursuits.

So tell us: What are your worst MMVA memories? Do you disagree with our list?

Look who goes to this crap show .... it's all tinnie-bobbers, 14, 15 year olds. They wouldn't know a bad act if it landed on their head, and danced. Brutal!!!

I don't mean to be rude, but how can you folks publish this article without first spellchecking and proofreading it?

3. Jed -
Well if you havn't noticed yahoo doesn't come up with the best stories anyways

4. JN -
You know its a terrible award show when Nickelback is nominated in several categories. What are terrible band!

5. *parris* -
Music awards are made to have the most popular songs of that time awarded, and all of these songs and preformers (whether anyone likes it or not) have made all the billboard charts whether it's canadian or america. So suck it up... every once a year people are nominated for having a cheesy song. And cheesy performers. Entertainment is entertainment... the cheesy makes me laugh, the horrible makes me laugh. Come on grow a spirit... they have more money then me... and I can not hate on that.

6. LowCarb -
ysucks63, I'm wondering how a someone can "pretty much" from the same town. She is or isn't. And since you're attacking CL on a personal level, can you see your feet when your standing? Do you need a TV tray to put your food on watching TV or do u just set it on your gut? Someone showing their butt crack is digusting. Just ask anyone whose had a plumber in the house. And finally, Avril is very far away from being beautifull. Perhaps it's time for glasses

Having looked at the videos, it seems to me Nick Lachey pulled off a pretty good performance - he's actually singing, and he's doing a fine job of it. Now Ashlee Simpson on the other hand... Ouch.

8. Yahoo! Music User -
I definitely have to agree with Chloe Tejada on Ashlee Simpson's horrifying performance. How the hell was anyone able to promote her or market her? It sure pays to have a name and a lot of money. There isn't even an inkling of musical talent in her body. I'll give her one thing though, at least she remembered the words.

9. Berry -
and also, you're right Ad-hominem attacks arent cool, right? but IMO saying Avril is "Cringe worthy" Is pretty much a personal attack!

10. Yahoo! Music User -
wooooow! girlicious was suckicious! i've never seen them so bad! their outfits were stupid and just the overall preformance!

11. Yahoo! Music User -
Can anyone even remember someone who performed at the MMVAs who actually sounded *good*?

12. Yahoo! Music User -
Nick Lachey did good i thought, so did girlicious. Fergie wasn't that good and ashlee simpson was just terrible! The avril thing was no big thing i thought. (i also live reaaallly close to napanee)

13. gdeck77 -
MMVA's suck period......ysucks63 wow ur educated are you like in high school or is 63 the year you were born if so kinda pathetic.....

14. Joanne -
ashlee simpson :O

15. Lynne -
Nick Lachey..? I guess he's okey although I never liked him in the first place maybe because of Jessica Simpson who also has no talent...same with her sister's video here. I tried watching it just for curiosity but can't stand it and didn't finish it...she really can't sing. I don't understand why anyone like her singing...you call that singing? Uuggh! Fergie is good...don't forget this is a live show and at least she didn't lipsynch like everybody does on a live show.

16. LowCarb -
ysucks63, You just can't get by the the personal insults can you. You know nothing about anybody so you resort to school ground insults. As you may want to read my post again, I did not say you were any of those things. I merely pointed out that the same type of degrading questions could be asked about you and whether they are true or not I apparently struck a nerve but that's how some people are. and again Avril is not beautifull, she is damn cute though which, is completely different from beautifull. And by your outburst about my being gay which, I am not thankfully, I do suspect that you are fighting the urge to "come out"

17. Alexandra -
I kind of agree with this list. Most of the performances at the MMVA's are bad anyways. But I at least giggled at the Avril ass crack bit. It wasn't terrible.

18. Yahoo! Music User -
yeah, ysucks63, those were dumb ass comments. even if avril is pretty, who WANTS to see ANYONE's butt crack? (i'm not saying she's pretty btw, i actually don't think she is). not to mention, your personal attacks to Chole T. were moronic, infantile rantings and calling LawCarb gay is a xenophobe/homophobe's defense... if you don't understand any of the big words i used, look it up... and look up how the HIV epidemic started while you're at it (hint: ceremonies involving monkies)

I feel sorry for young people of today-- you don,t have any
good artist out there to entertain you guys.
No wonder record companies are losing money, they keep
signing talentless losers and musical doodoo down you guys
earhole. Young poeple there should be a revolution against
the music industry.Change it for the better of humanity--
HURRY,PLEASE HURRY

All very big name stars. Not surprising that is was all horrible either. Most of the problem with music these days is videos. Before videos and celebrity became more important than songs, pop music had mystique and magic. That's the best part about all of these video stations abandoning music videos and instead playing shows about guys stapling their testicles to a plank. Maybe the age of the "video artist" can be put behind us or become secondary to musical virtuosity and inspired songwriting.
