Nashville Star Preview: Contestants Just Wanna Have Fun

Posted Mon Jun 23, 2008 1:26pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Who knew that Cyndi Lauper--she of the fluorescently Jello-hued hair, Fran-Drescher-on-helium voice, and ratty thrift-stote prom gowns--had such a high standing among the country community?

Maybe it was Lauper's tie-in to world wrestling back in the day (I mean that as no slag; it's a fact that there's at least some tenuous connection between country music fans and pro wrestling fans).

Or maybe it's the fact that she might be the second-most colorfully OTT, Bedazzler'd lady in music...second only to country's own Dolly Parton. (I've long since thought Mizz Lauper should open her own "Cyndiwood" theme park.)

Or maybe it's just because Cyndi's supposedly wacky songs actually translate surprisingly well to different genres.

Anyhoo, whatever the reason, it turns out that at least two of tonight's Nashville Star finalists will be covering Cyndi songs, country-stylee, on tonight's "Pop Goes Country" episode.

On the bright side, seeming frontrunner Melissa "Something To Talk About" Lawson will be tackling Cyndi's tender ballad "True Colors," and I think she's going to do a fabulous job. I can already imagine Melissa's rich, commanding voice making magic out of that track. It'll be real hair-on-end stuff. Fluorescent-orange-hair-on-end stuff, even!

On the minus side, underwear model Justin Gaston--who so far has demonstrated the personality, stage presence, and vocal range of a pair of droopy drawers--has elected to interpret "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." With seriously campy Making Menudo vocal coach David Coury giving him singing tips.

Uh-oh.

Well, girls just wanna have fun, indeed...and I don't know about you, but this girl is sure going to have fun witnessing Justin's trainwreck. My mind boggles at the very prospect of watching him attempt to perform a bubbly new wave number that once inspired a straight-to-USA-Network Sarah Jessica Parker '80s teen comedy.

Here are a couple sneak-preview clips of Justin and Melissa showing their true colors, as they prepare to go straight to Cyndiwood:

Over all, I think I enjoyed the show a little more this week than I did the first two... with the exception of the guests. Maybe I just wasn't expecting quite as much???

I guess I will be joining the dark side also. I have been voting all along for Coffey as the worst, tonight was even worse than before. I would much rather listen to Justin than Coffey. (ducking). I also see more potential judging by this weeks performance. Tremendous improvement tonight and sounded more country than most. There is absolutely nothing about Coffey, I see as country excluding the attire. You can't slap a hat on Urban and make it country.

Melissa had awesome vocals tonight but where was the 100% country she claims to be. I'm not buying her as a country singer. Although I like her a lot, she is not fitting in with my idea of c [profane]ry.

Ashlee has good vocal tone and this week stayed on pitch pretty well but egad her enunciation his horrendous. She kinda reminds me of Emmy Lou who I never liked simply because of her enunciation. I know Emmy had plenty of fans though so I guess I'm the one standing alone on this one.

The rest really aren't impressing much either way. Don't really care for them but don't hate them.

Gabe was once again my winner. He started out with a some pitch problems but came on stong and finished really well. He looked a little sharper tonight and he did relax a little more and showed more personality. He once again showed more to me as the best country singer on the show.

oh, please don't compare that non-pharsing, taylor swift wannabe with one of the two purest country sopranos ever (the other being alison krauss). Emmy Lou might not be everyone's cup of tea, but Ashley and Coffey have got to go... got to, got to, got to... there is nothing about them that is good except marketability..

I guess I must have had a typo and left out an o as I sure didn't intend anything profane. Sorry, purely unintentional.

LP, where's the review?? Are the judges watching a different show than me?? The girl who sang britanny has got to go.. and the judges liked it! i don't get it...I sure like AI way better..only Melissa and Gabe would survive! Go Gabe for getting the highest votes!
