It's Not Kris Allen's Fault

Posted Tue May 26, 2009 12:47pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

I'm beginning to feel bad for Kris Allen. It's not his fault that America made a mistake.

Now, my regular readers know that as an avid Adam Lambert supporter since Hollywood Week, I am still reeling over Adam's defeat on American Idol last Wednesday. I truly feel Adam was the REAL Idol. Many other viewers and readers agree with me. And I have a feeling even Kris Allen agrees with me a little bit, since the first words out of his mouth, upon hearing the news from Ryan Seacrest that he'd won, were: "Adam deserves this."

But poor Kris, deserving or not, hasn't been able to fully savor his victory, and not just because he might be suffering from survivor's guilt. His win is the most tainted and bittersweet in Idol history--especially in light of new accusations of voter tampering.

For instance, the entire finale--which was supposed to be a celebration of the WINNING Idol--was instead The Adam Lambert Show, since the only real finale highlights people were chattering about around the watercooler the following morning (aside from Kara DioGuardi's Bikini Girl duet) were Adam's history-making performances with Kiss and Queen. (Yes, I know Kris sang with Queen as well, but "We Are The Champions" was completely inappropriate for his style and he was utterly upstaged, only taking on the lower, easier parts and then stepping back into the woodwork while Adam belted out all the big power-notes.)

And then, from the minute Kris entered the finale night press room about an hour after winning, the question on the lips of every reporter at the Nokia Theater was not "How does it feel to win?" but "Are you surprised you won?" or "Are you surprised Adam lost?" (I was in the press room and I can assure you, the reporters were much more excited when Adam showed up backstage to field press queries.)

And of course, the big news on every blog and in every newspaper last Thursday morning was not "KRIS ALLEN WINS!" but "ADAM LAMBERT LOSES!" Despite coming in second, Adam was still the bigger story.

Conspiracy theories abounded--about the "Christian vote," about Arkansas phone-banking, about the voting being rigged by 19 Entertainment because Adam didn't "need" to win as much as Kris did, about anti-Semitism and homophobia, and most recently about unethical AT&T involvement. The fact that more Americans might have preferred Kris's musical style, plain and simple, was rarely discussed.

And then everyone was crying out, "What will Adam do next?"--record with Queen, go on the road with Kiss, star in the next Spiderman movie?--while no one in the media seemed to care about Kris's next crucial career move. (Then again, Kris-friendly finale acts Jason Mraz and Keith Urban weren't exactly offering jobs to Kris, were they?)

I understand the lack of general media interest in Kris. He's just not as interesting. I mean, I'm a member of the media and I've never been all that interested in him. But then both versions of "No Boundaries" came out, and it seemed like the powers-that-be at Idol weren't all that interested in Kris, either.

Adam's recording was a lushly produced, speaker-rustling power-ballad that sounded like it was slaved over in the studio for several days. Kris's single comparatively sounded like it was recorded in a closet during a studio lackey's lunch break. Additionally, Adam's cover art featured a slickly styled picture and lots of cloud-flare Photoshop effects, while Kris's resembled a student project from a basic Quark Xpress 101 class, with just some Helvetica slapped across a Kris photo that looked like it'd been taken at a kiosk in a mall.

And on top of all that, the record label that reps both Kris and Adam sent out a press release declaring Adam "the real American Idol." Yes, I wholeheartedly agreed with this statement--I do deeply believe, down to my very core, that Adam was totally robbed--but still, I felt bad for Kris that he didn't even have the support of his own label.

Of course, it's hard to actively dislike Kris. As angry as I am that he won, I've never been angry at him, since he's been extremely, self-effacingly humble about his Idol win and it's clear that he has nothing but admiration and respect for his good friend Adam. If the conspiracy theories about the "Christian vote" are at all true, that stuff had nothing to do with Kris, and Kris himself would surely not approve of any sort of anti-Adam hate campaign. (Kris made that clear on CNN's Larry King Live show last Friday, telling guest host Ryan Seacrest: "I guess me and Adam were doing an interview before the show. [And I was asked] 'Kris, do you think you're going to get the Christian vote now that Danny's gone?' And that was rough, that was kind of upsetting, because the show's not about religion...we are there to do music and there to sing, and hopefully people vote on that.")

Obviously, many people, myself included, are unhappy that Kris won American Idol. But it's not really his fault that he won. He knew he wasn't the best singer (he said so, flat-out, at his audition), but he shrugged his shoulders, crossed his fingers, and tried his best. He's not the one who messed up. It's the voters (or maybe AT&T) who messed up.

I wonder if any of this bums Kris out. I wonder if he worries that he won't ever sell as many records or get as much press as Adam. I wonder if he feels like a fraud. And I wonder if Adam Lambert feels kind of bad, too.

Adam didn't win so just leave it alone. Kris won, but instead of you all giving him his props you just talk about him. Did you vote, if you did maybe Adam would have won. Leave Kris alone I liked him better anyway. The show isn't rigged, wasn't anything wrong with the voting and plain and simple the people who are complaining about the new American Idol should have just voted. Other than that shut up and let Kris enjoy his victory.

Kris deserved to win too! Which he did and no one should take that from him. He is a talented, radio ready singer. Adam should perform on Broadway.

By everyone talking about how horrible it is (which its not) that Kris won, they are only making those of us to voted for Kris more likely to run out and buy his music. I plan on buying what Kris produces and not what Adam does, first of all b/c I like Kris's kind of music better and second due to all this hype about how he shouldn't of won!

Kris, I wish you all the best!

Evrybody is smoking some real good drugs if you think Adam should have won this competition. I am also so sick and tired how the judges manipulate the outcome of this show.....I thought it was America who voted....and they picked the real winner.

Those votes for Kris were also votes to return the show to its roots of finding 'real' contestants with undiscovered talent and giving them the chance to grow and shine. They were votes that said 'we're tired of seeing contestants who already seem to know it all'.on Saturday clear

I think everyone should leave Kris alone. He has a good voice and he's a nice guy. He shouldn't feel bad for winning. He won so that's that!

I am so tired of people being upset over Kris winning AI Get over it - Kris own - I have a hard time with sour grapes. People voted and Kris won. I was not at the watch party and I know how to power text - It is what it is. I think Kris appeals to a broader audience and to the tweens of this country than Adam. Adam has a great voice there is not denying that - but he appeals more to a broadway audience. This is so out of control - Kris won and should be celebrated.

I agree completely with your blog. Kris is such a nice guy that you have to feel lousy for him. His crown will forever be tarnished. He'll never know if he could have won fairly if AT&T didn't rig the votes in Arkansas.
Like you, I adore Adam Lambert. The first AI contestant that I ever really put my all behind. Never before did we download performances. Now I listen to my mp3 player all of his songs... on a loop! Who ever said that he wasn't listenable didn't know what he was talking about. I mean, he's very yummy to watch. But I just love his voice... his range... even his high notes!
Adam will go far and he'll do it based on his own ability. While I would have wanted him to have the accolades of winning... I mean he did deserve it... he will have a stunning career. And it won't be limited by AI's telescopic view of the music industry.
As for the future of AI... unless they come out and really denounce AT&T's help in the voting and make the voting more controlled. Like they do on Dancing With The Stars. You get one vote per couple that is dancing. !0 couples. 10 votes per telephone line and 10 votes per internet sign-on. It's fair and controlled. AI's voting has gotten completely out of hand and is now totally untrustworthy.
I don't know what will happen next year. Don't know if I'll ever watch or vote again. What a bummer!

Get over it already!!! Let them both just be! They are obviously going to both have albums and that is apparently what is important to them both!!!!

169. Suzanne -
wow, some people can be soooooooooooooooo mean!!!! haveing sang sense i was 14....i can tell you this, THEY BOTH ARE VERY TALENTED!!! I think kris has a wonderful voice and deserve to win just as much as Adam, or dannie gokey for that matter!!!! They both will do great things and never matters who wins ultimately.....its how talented they are and we all know "THEY ARE"!!!!! so stop all the negative chatter, my god people,.....

Oops, misspelled your first name. Sorry.

Turn off the tv and go outside and get some fresh air. TV kills brain cells and its so obvious that all of you are watching way too much tv.

172. Yahoo! Music User -
Sorry, but if Adam should have won then he would have!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am glad that Kris won. He is very musically talented and America voted for him. He deserved to win. People need to get over it and move on.

At the beginning of the season I sorta like Adam, then it became the same thing every week... hit the high note and you're done. He has great stage presence and amazing vocal range but I really got bored seeing the same thing over and over from him every week and the U2 song in the finale truly sucked! Kris, on the other hand, played guitar or piano or sang solo. (Does Adam play any instruments?) Kris rearranged nearly every song he played and he sang in tune. That's all I needed to hear to know that he will outsell Adam. Kids don't like Adam - he sounds like a lady opera singer to them. They prefer Kris and I think kids are the ones buying most music these days.

175. Linda -
after reading your blog I am now positive the right guy won! if you are a reflection of Adams fan base well ....it now make's sense that Kris was the winner! he is a nice combo of talent and class....

176. Tam -
The amount of stupidity in these blogs is crazy. First off, Adam could get offers from Kiss or Queen because they are bands!!! Kris sang with solo artists smart one! Adam is getting a lot of attention not because he is the one who was supposed to win, he is getting attention because the American Idol powers who be set it up as if he was already the winner. You showed this yourself with the album covers.
Second, I am a christian and I wouldn't have voted for Kris becasue he is a christian. I would have voted for anyone just to get rid of the screeching that came out of Adam's mouth everytime he sang.
Thank goodness that Kris won. It would have been terrible if Adam had won.

177. Queen -
You are giving Kris press by talking about all this. Its just setting Adam up to prove he was the rightful winner by leaps and bounds. America didn't make a mistake, they were sick of the Adam hype and enjoyed the performances put on by Kris. It was Kris who by far had the best last weeks on the show, its no wonder the casual voters sided with him. The media is just going to have to get over it. Wait until they both put out albums and see what they sound like. I guarantee you that you'll think Adam's is way too pop like you whined about David Cook's album.

178. twowolftwo -
Of course there's sour grapes, if your guy didn't win your unhappy and have nothing nice to say. Or your one of those that have nothing nice ot say about anything. I feel sorry for Kris, I also think Adam was by far the better performer. America voted, ( even if it was fixed by AT&T according to the new york times) Kris won, live with it....Trust my Adam will do just fine after his commitment with Fox.

Lyndsey

Its not Kris fault ????? He won how about it is screaming Adams fault he lost. As a reporter you should try and be less biased.

I thought Allison had the most talent on the show America did not you do not see me crying about it

While I enjoyed both contestants' performances this season, I became a little tired of Adam's over-the-top stage shows. The show is a singing competition, not a Broadway performance competition. Kris' music style is obviously more in touch with what is played on pop music stations nationwide. He appeals to a larger audience of all age groups, which may be why he received more votes. I grew up in the 80's and was a huge hard rock/metal fan, but I just don't feel that someone supposed to be an "idol" to young musicians will come from that genre.

Lambert says he got carried away, but not sorry
