Greg Pritchard: 'Britain's Got Talent' Reaches New Heights

Posted Mon May 11, 2009 12:18pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

When I first laid eyes on the latest buzzy Britain's Got Talent sensation, 24-year-old Welsh waiter Greg Pritchard, I sort of assumed he was the across-the-pond equivalent of Adam Lambert.

Greg definitely had the Lambert Look I wanted to know better: copiously product-placed hairdo, expertly applied guyliner, H&M black pleather, ambiguously androgynous rocker-boy image, and obvious natural charisma. I only hoped that he'd also have Adam's incredible vocal range.

Well, the bloke had range, all right:

Blimey. This "male soprano" was a whole lot prettier than Susan Boyle (no "makeover" necessary here)...AND his voice was about, um, 18 octaves shriller! He in fact possessed a higher-pitched tone than even Britain's Got Talent's pre-pubescent singing ballerina, Hollie Steel.

While the Britain's Got Talent TV drama has always been completely and rather formulaically based on fakeouts (i.e., the judges and audience assuming a contestant won't be able to sing a note, then being proven very, very wrong), this latest BGT stunner may have been the most surprising yet. Greg's performance was definitely disconcerting at first, hearing such a glass-shattering falsetto emanating from a ruggedly soul-patch-accented male mouth. Certainly the shocked silence in the Britain's Got Talent auditorium was indication of this gender-bending, mind-bending confusion, as was the temporarily speechlessness of the normally loquacious Simon Cowell.

And when Simon eventually said, "That shouldn't have just happened," it was unclear whether or not he was actually impressed.

But yes, it did happen...and yes, it should have happened. Greg's vocals (like "a dog meowing," according to what Simon intended as a bizarre, almost Paula Abdul-like compliment) may have been an acquired taste upon first listen, but his "Nessun Dorma" performance was still bloody gob-smacking, as the Brits might say.

Backstage, one of the BGT emcees wondered aloud about Greg's seemingly helium-enhanced voice: "Surely he can't get any higher!" But I think Greg's career is about to soar to great, Adam Lambert-esque heights.

I remember a high-pitched singer, named "Tiny Tim", famous for his one-hit wonder, "Tip Toe Through the Tulips" back in the 1970s. Ok, he was soooo bad.
This guy.... well, he is really GOOD, but just what to make of it? It's brave of him to sing in front of all those people . He was on key. I'm just not sure the public is ready for a current Male Soprano. He probably would have been very successful about three hundred years ago. Now? Not so much.

Adam Lambert is A TRILLION TIMES BETTER, THIS GREG GUY IS A CLOWN

Ooookayyyyyy. That was surprising. It was beautiful nonetheless. I have to appreciate a range like that. And for the people who keeps saying Adam Lambert is better, I judge not by personality, but I judge by vocals, range and pitch. This guy on BGT stayed on pitch, kept in his range and his vocals were amazing. Adam looses the pitch and he screams his vocals. Though he is great, and I probably would buy CDs, he isn't better than this guy on BGT. Coming from a music enthusiast.

Sure there is a lot of talent in GB. But this is getting to be a little boring. Does Simon still want to quit judging AI to judge BGT????? or is it so obvious.

Adam Lambert sucks world...If you go out and listen to anyone in your local town you kind find someone as good or better than adam lambert. I can name of the top of my head at least two or three singers who would mop the floor with adam lambert and his ridicously crappy voice. Just because he comes out in Leather does not mean he is good. Stage presence is only one aspect. I thought it was about he vocals. As we have seen in the past AI usually gets it wrong! I can barely watch the show anymore...I cant sing that great but I could definently beat out some of the freaking contestants who make the show. As far as BGT Susan Boyle was dynamite no matter what she looked like. i will admit that this guy they just showed was not awe inspiring but think if an AI contestant could sing that high..I doubt it...but really alot of people can sing high.I didn't really see an variation in his voice...Maxwell puts him to shame and shows how someoen should sing high and use variation..Listen to this womans work if you do not believe me....

Jealousy rears its ugly head with you people. If you don't have anything nice to say STFU. Why is it we hate to see someone do well and only love to belittle folks.
Get up on the stage, however no one will want to see your pathetic little life because that’s all you have too offer.

this guy sounds like a fat lady. Anything's better than adam lambert though really. lambert really sucks.

I second reader Frank Castle's motion about BGT, but that show is a counter to AI. Which itself doesn't feature any really talented people. What a difference half a century makes, though. Back then, the British Invasion featured talented artists, many of whom were inspired by talented American artists. Two generations later, the Brits are copycatting our no-talent noisemakers!

Absolutely beautiful! :)

177. Yahoo! Music User -
this is ok but not better than that one lady

Really folks..from America, (ya would be great) or the Moon who cares, he is one very talented guy! More power to ya!!!!

Just let the man shine, yo.

It scares me.
