Greg Pritchard: 'Britain's Got Talent' Reaches New Heights

Posted Mon May 11, 2009 12:18pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

When I first laid eyes on the latest buzzy Britain's Got Talent sensation, 24-year-old Welsh waiter Greg Pritchard, I sort of assumed he was the across-the-pond equivalent of Adam Lambert.

Greg definitely had the Lambert Look I wanted to know better: copiously product-placed hairdo, expertly applied guyliner, H&M black pleather, ambiguously androgynous rocker-boy image, and obvious natural charisma. I only hoped that he'd also have Adam's incredible vocal range.

Well, the bloke had range, all right:

Blimey. This "male soprano" was a whole lot prettier than Susan Boyle (no "makeover" necessary here)...AND his voice was about, um, 18 octaves shriller! He in fact possessed a higher-pitched tone than even Britain's Got Talent's pre-pubescent singing ballerina, Hollie Steel.

While the Britain's Got Talent TV drama has always been completely and rather formulaically based on fakeouts (i.e., the judges and audience assuming a contestant won't be able to sing a note, then being proven very, very wrong), this latest BGT stunner may have been the most surprising yet. Greg's performance was definitely disconcerting at first, hearing such a glass-shattering falsetto emanating from a ruggedly soul-patch-accented male mouth. Certainly the shocked silence in the Britain's Got Talent auditorium was indication of this gender-bending, mind-bending confusion, as was the temporarily speechlessness of the normally loquacious Simon Cowell.

And when Simon eventually said, "That shouldn't have just happened," it was unclear whether or not he was actually impressed.

But yes, it did happen...and yes, it should have happened. Greg's vocals (like "a dog meowing," according to what Simon intended as a bizarre, almost Paula Abdul-like compliment) may have been an acquired taste upon first listen, but his "Nessun Dorma" performance was still bloody gob-smacking, as the Brits might say.

Backstage, one of the BGT emcees wondered aloud about Greg's seemingly helium-enhanced voice: "Surely he can't get any higher!" But I think Greg's career is about to soar to great, Adam Lambert-esque heights.

I loved it, it was so shocking to hear such a high range coming from someone that looked like he should be fronting a new version of the sex pistols. BGT is a lot more REAL than AI in my opinion. Some of the people I have seen on it would never make it on aI cause they do not have that "look" or are too old.

a-ha has just found its next lead singer after Morten Harket can no longer reach his high notes, assuming Greg Pritchard can hit the LOW notes!

I like BGT, Simon is so much nicer and personable on this show, he looks like he enjoys himself more....And I hate when fellow Americans make comments like Katelyn did, maybe if we had shows that weren't just about how much of a lying, backstabbing A****** you are, then maybe we would see more of America's unsung talents.

Things like that make you appreciate the Arts.

I don't watch AI much but Adam Lambert is a great singer. This guy is awesome...bc not many ppl can sing like that. I would say he doesn't need to be on BGT...hes too good for that show! I believe the ppl that diss him are just jealous bc they can't carry a tune at all.

He could definitely sub for Thom Yorke in Radiohead.

Hmmm...

I think that he should sing something that shows the entire range of his singing ability. If he could go from tenor to soprano and back again and do it with a modern song,..that would be cool.

Wow! A pleasant shocker! Frank Castle, get over YOUR stupid American exceptionalism. Those of us with lives, do appreciate things coming to us from other countries.

This guy was incredible. I was as shocked as anyone. Makes me wonder if his job involves singing in any aspect(?). (Macaroni Grill here in the US) That would be a trick! "- ) Either way, I'd love to have Happy Birthday sung to me by him!

I think this dude was pretty awesome. I have no idea about whoever that Lambert guy.. I will take a blind stab and guess I wouldn't be too impressed, though, either. It takes a lot to sing that high (for anybody) I don't care what range it's called, and he's got my American vote. lol. Although I don't suggest he'll ever be popular, really - I just hope he gets to be well-known as a global performer in at least that group that no one knows about, but they know themselves as if a completely different artist-based society...

Okay.....that was weird.

That was good. I wasn't expecting the sounds I heard coming from a guy. I loved it. In case any of you were unaware the group Il Divo was put together by Simon Cowell himself and they have done wonderfully and they do opera style of music. It is nice to see some of the younger generation opening their minds to different types of music.

thats gotta be fake

He sounds like a girl. Adam like sreams he never should have made on AI. I hate both of them.

Thanks Lindsey. Your liking of this hack only shows how besotten you are with Glambert. Bad singing sung to an utterly outdated 80's glam metal tone.

Darn good voice. I don't particularly like opera, but he's good. There aren't many counter tenors out there, so he should be able to get a job at any opera company he wants.
