Allison Cut: American Idol Now A Boys' Club

Posted Wed May 6, 2009 7:46pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Last night on American Idol, Simon Cowell predicted that Allison Iraheta's smokin' "Slow Ride" duet with Adam Lambert would save her in this competition. Usually, Simon is right. But sadly, this time he got it wrong.

Yes, Allison was axed tonight, ironically during Rock 'N' Roll Week, which should have been her strongest week yet. Since I'm an Allison fan who until this evening was still dreaming of an Adam/Allison finale in just two weeks' time, this news, of course, did not rock my world.

Tonight's Rock 'N' Roll results show actually kicked off quite rockingly, with perhaps the only group singalong number that I didn't find unbearably cruise-shippy this entire season, because a) it featured Slash!!!!; b) it featured an Alice Cooper song!!!!; and c) it offered some more Adam-on-Allison duet action!!!! (in the G-rated sense, of course).

But then, when my predicted eliminated contestant, Kris Allen, was the first to be sent to safety by Ryan Seacrest (the look on his face indicated that he was as shocked as I was), my heart sank for the little redheaded girl.

And then, when Adam made it through, I was filled with mixed emotions: I was absolutely elated, naturally, that there'd be no near-elimination scare for Adam like there was last week, but fearful that it was just down to Allison and Danny Gokey in the bottom two.

Danny of course deserved to go home based on last night's laughably shrieky mangling of a perfectly good Aerosmith song and his narcolepsy-inducingly boring Styx duet with Kris. But since he'd never been in the bottom before, while Allison had landed there more times than anyone in the remaining final four, it didn't look so good for her. Still, I clung to my rock 'n' roll fantasy that she would once again be safe.

Well, after 64 million votes--the highest vote tally outside of an Idol finale--Allison was cut, despite her solid "Crybaby" performance last night. I guess 64 million people CAN be wrong. And I was the one who was the crybaby upon learning these results. I will truly miss her girl power in this competition. American Idol is now officially a boys' club, as this is the first season in which the final three have all been male. Boo!

I honestly don't know why the Idol audience never really connected with Allison. She had the vocal chops, that was undeniable. And being the only teenager in the top 10, she should have had the tween demographic all sewn up. Just being the sole female in the top four should have been enough to give her some edge over Danny and Kris. She was the only person of color in the final four, too. That should have helped as well, but it did not.

So what was it? Was it her Manic-Panic'd hair? Because her tresses looked better than ever last night, thanks to her sleek new extensions. Was it her shy demeanor? Because she sure wasn't shy when she sassed back to Simon last night. I just don't know. All I know is, America got it wrong here. I truly believe that.

I only hope that Allison follows in the platinum-plated footsteps of fellow fourth-placer Chris Daughtry. Daughtry, one of the most successful AmIdol alums ever, performed his new single "No Surprise" on tonight's results show, and he proved once again that sometimes when a contestant comes in fourth, that contestant actually wins.

So I am rooting that Allison has a Daughtry-esque career path ahead of her, because she's still a winner in my book.

#162 I'm a straight chick too! From Freakin Alabama believe it or not. I still feel like you have issues with the possiblity that he is gay. So What, He can sing and that is what matters.

Well with Allison out of the competition I have to sadly say I am done with American Idol for this seasons because I personally don't care who wins this season now. And now I am not saying that as a "sore loser" because I'm an Allison fan it's simply because I just didn't feel a connection with anyone else on the show.

Good Luck to the final three :)

If this turns out to be a Kris/Danny AmIdol Finale, I'm not even going to bother watching.....who cares who wins? NO real talent there..just boring KARAOKE singers.

Allison had WAAAAAAAY more talent and personality than those 2 boring losers. And yes, I DEMAND a recount.

VOTE FOR THE WORST (.com) needs to be DESTROYED asap......cuz there is NO way that America liked Danny's performance from this week or any of his previous SNOOZERS!! Please PPL, vote for someone who is ORIGINAL, who can sing POP, ROCK, BALLADS, the PHONE BOOK for crying out loud....not someone who turns every song into a JACK JOHNSON-sound alike (and DESTROYS every song, btw!) and a GOSPEL singer who bores me to death!!!

ADAM better win this one...if he doesn't, then why bother?

Allison is gonna have an awesome career and I can't wait to BUY her first album. Congrats Allison!!!

It is enough of Kris.....he should have gone home.

So the contest should be based on race and gender?

Actually Lyndsey, I was thinking forever why people wouldn't vote for Allison because honestly she has been the best female rock singer in atleast the last 5 seasons.Your comment that she was the only person of color left, well in my opinion that is what hurt her. I am not usually one to play the race game but why the hell else would mainstream America not vote for her? It makes no sense. Kris should have been gone 5 weeks ago. Danny is a pretty good singer except for last night but Allison is definately better then him. I love Adam but you know what I would have been perfectly happy if Allison had won and beat Adam rather then Allison being beat by Kris and Danny. I just really can't believe it. Now I really don't think Adam will stand a chance to win if this is how America votes oh we can't vote for the colored girl that isn't blond hair blue eyes(I'm not sure what Allison is that is why I say colored), and they will probably think we can't let a eyeliner nail polish (possibly gay-I guess it is true, I just don't want to believe it) guy win the competition. You know what it will probably be Kris who wins. Kris should have never even been in the top 13. I love Allison but I doubt she will get a record deal. Let's just wait and see. Truly sad.

What the hell people?!?! Danny is flawless all season long, never once hitting the bottom 3, then cuz of 1 bad choice & a shaky end to an otherwise decent perfprmance, you're writing him off??? He handled like a pro, admitted he was wrong & that it was laughable after all, & rocked out durin the group performance showing what he really can do & you still wanna give him the axe? What about pitchy, forgettable Kris? He's never had a truly memorable, shiver-inducing performance & yet he beat out Allison?? America really did get it wrong. Allison was AMAZING & I hated that it was down to her & Danny. I was hoping they'd be the 2 in the final. If it ends up down to Kris & Adam, I will never watch Idol again.

ChicaRox -- How can you say Kris is a Kareoke singer?? Aside form Adam, he's the only one who has consistently and successfully switched up the songs he sings ---- Can't say the same for Danny, Allison or any of the others. I will agree that Danny should have went a LONG time ago and he should not be in the final two, but you can't say Kris has no talent because he has proven time and time again that he does. (with the exception of a couple bombs...aka 'All She Wants to Do is dance'.) Don't confuse talent and your taste in music -- just because he's not your favorite style of music doesn't mean he has no talent.

There is a group out their that's called VOTE FOR THE WORST. I guess they now have a lot of members who have been voting for idols in the past. Its a shame that people can be so jealous that they want to ruin someone elses chances of becoming successful. The way things are going, this could be a Danny & Kris finale

I am so sad Allison got sent home...I was hoping to see her in the finale. It is ridiculous that Danny was safe and he should have gone home last night after that hideous performance.
Hoping now for him to go home next week and put Kris in the finale with Adam!!!!!!!!

oh and Jeff, nobody cares if you stop reading...if you don't like it don't come to this site, read the blog, and make a comment.

Allison has a sound that moves a person and that will help her in the future. She will move on to bigger and better things. I really don't know how anyone in their right mind could have voted to keep Gokey on???? They must be deaf!

172. Snow Owl -
I was shocked that Allison went home last night.
That just was not right.
Like Randy said she could sing her face off,she could singh anything & she was so cute too.
I thiought for sure either Danny or Chris would go home.
I was looking forward to a, Allisson & And Adam finale.
I'm hoping Adam will win,if he doesn't then there is definately something wrong with Ameria.
Oh well thats my 2 cents worth anyway.

How right you are Lindsey. Allison deserved top votes, but somewhere along the line, Idol fans blew that out of the water. I am bewildered on why they voted Allison off last night, and decided Kris to stay. He cannot compare to the "little" redhead. Her voice is distinct in her style. She is a true artist and performer. She is refreshing and deserved to be in the "last" three. I know she will prove her artistry in months to come. She will have a Platinum record.

i will miss allison! she was the only one who brought fun and spunk to the show. and when she started crying when she was singing....it was so sad!! i'll so miss you allison!

Well thats what happens when the lines are fixed so that you can call over 100 times in an hour. The lines should be fixed so you can only call once per household. That is more fair and a better judge on who America thinks is a good talent. The way it is now, a bunch of younger girls sit there and do nothing but repeat call over and over. Tell me how that is fair, and how can you really tell who America votes for?????? I mean common....64 million people do not watch American Idol we all know that. Next year they should set the phone calling system so it only will allow the one call and that will give you the exact indication of who is most popolur and who is not

176. PeteC -
Way to go America - You finally got a vote right!!!!!!! The Best Three are there.

177. Tanika -
You guys are basing your comments on one bad performance by Danny he deserves to stay..Chris should have gone home! I was rooting for Allison to win it but now we are going to have that screaming Adam win...LOVELY!

178. Kelly R -
Thank "Vote for the Worst" for Danny still sticking around. He is god awful. He is the next Taylor Hicks. And if you like Taylor Hicks, please go shoot yourself.
