Allison Cut: American Idol Now A Boys' Club

Posted Wed May 6, 2009 7:46pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Last night on American Idol, Simon Cowell predicted that Allison Iraheta's smokin' "Slow Ride" duet with Adam Lambert would save her in this competition. Usually, Simon is right. But sadly, this time he got it wrong.

Yes, Allison was axed tonight, ironically during Rock 'N' Roll Week, which should have been her strongest week yet. Since I'm an Allison fan who until this evening was still dreaming of an Adam/Allison finale in just two weeks' time, this news, of course, did not rock my world.

Tonight's Rock 'N' Roll results show actually kicked off quite rockingly, with perhaps the only group singalong number that I didn't find unbearably cruise-shippy this entire season, because a) it featured Slash!!!!; b) it featured an Alice Cooper song!!!!; and c) it offered some more Adam-on-Allison duet action!!!! (in the G-rated sense, of course).

But then, when my predicted eliminated contestant, Kris Allen, was the first to be sent to safety by Ryan Seacrest (the look on his face indicated that he was as shocked as I was), my heart sank for the little redheaded girl.

And then, when Adam made it through, I was filled with mixed emotions: I was absolutely elated, naturally, that there'd be no near-elimination scare for Adam like there was last week, but fearful that it was just down to Allison and Danny Gokey in the bottom two.

Danny of course deserved to go home based on last night's laughably shrieky mangling of a perfectly good Aerosmith song and his narcolepsy-inducingly boring Styx duet with Kris. But since he'd never been in the bottom before, while Allison had landed there more times than anyone in the remaining final four, it didn't look so good for her. Still, I clung to my rock 'n' roll fantasy that she would once again be safe.

Well, after 64 million votes--the highest vote tally outside of an Idol finale--Allison was cut, despite her solid "Crybaby" performance last night. I guess 64 million people CAN be wrong. And I was the one who was the crybaby upon learning these results. I will truly miss her girl power in this competition. American Idol is now officially a boys' club, as this is the first season in which the final three have all been male. Boo!

I honestly don't know why the Idol audience never really connected with Allison. She had the vocal chops, that was undeniable. And being the only teenager in the top 10, she should have had the tween demographic all sewn up. Just being the sole female in the top four should have been enough to give her some edge over Danny and Kris. She was the only person of color in the final four, too. That should have helped as well, but it did not.

So what was it? Was it her Manic-Panic'd hair? Because her tresses looked better than ever last night, thanks to her sleek new extensions. Was it her shy demeanor? Because she sure wasn't shy when she sassed back to Simon last night. I just don't know. All I know is, America got it wrong here. I truly believe that.

I only hope that Allison follows in the platinum-plated footsteps of fellow fourth-placer Chris Daughtry. Daughtry, one of the most successful AmIdol alums ever, performed his new single "No Surprise" on tonight's results show, and he proved once again that sometimes when a contestant comes in fourth, that contestant actually wins.

So I am rooting that Allison has a Daughtry-esque career path ahead of her, because she's still a winner in my book.

I don't like Adam. All he does is scream. I don't like his appearance. He sucks. he needs to go. Allison should have stayed. She was rockin it.

Sorry if this was already posted...but did Allison say that Simon was being a "dick"? Something was definitely censored out...and I kept playing it back to try to read her lips. That's what I came up with. Either way...good for her.

I hope for Danny & Chris that the economy picks up soon & more people book cruises...so that both won't be out of work come June. No matter who wins.....more to come from Adam & Allison!!!

Allison definitly deserved to stay!!!!!!!!! Her and Danny have at least equal voices, (personally, i think allison's is way better) but danny has been sinking fast the last few weeks while allison has been rising to the top! I'm just hoping they made a mistake counting the votes.

Eight weeks ago I wrote here how the top ten would play out and what week each person would go home. I gave detailed reasons why and was viciously attacked by people here. Each week I have come back and never had to say, "oops, I was wrong" because I have been dead on right.

So, to all you who got angry that I said Scott was nice but could not sing, that Lil was just an average singer, that Matt was "the invisible man" because no one could even remember his name or what he sang, that Alison would go home as #4, etc., etc. What can I say? I was 100% correct.

By the way, remember ... Adam goes home next week.

Final two - Danny and Kris.

It's hard to be humble.

Though I have loved Adams originality and he has had some of my favorite performances this season, Allison has been my pick all along. And on Rock night, She was above and beyond the best performer out their, even above Adam, who to me was a bit over the top. Gokey is BORING, always.....I Like Kris, but not as consistantly fantastic. Was a flashback to Daughtry's elimination, so hoping Allison can follow in that path. May be good for her, not being so totally at the beck and call of IDOL. Can do her own thing... I just don't get the voting public....Taylor Hicks as an Idol, now COME ON!

Well, in my personal opinion. I thought that Allison was a great singer, but I kind of liked Danny like 1% more just because I haven't seen AI in a while. I really do hope that someone signs her a contract so that she can keep on amazing the world with her voice. As for Adam, and I know people out there completely love him, I think he is a disgrace. Last night's performance was a disaster in my eyes. I have never liked Adam, except for the thrilling fact that he wears eyeliner, but other than that, I can't stand it when he sings. I turn the channel so that I don't have to hear his whiny voice again. He actually gives me a headache hearing him sing. I think that when it comes to Rock especially, he should stay away completely. I do have to give it to him though, he can kind of hit those high noted pretty well...

#132....I hope you are right!

Allison is good, but not as good as the rest of them. I am a HUGE Danny Gokey fan and even tho he didn't do that well this week I knew there was no way he was going to go home. He's very liked and just because you have ONE bad week, why should he go home?!! On another note, I wish Adam would just go home already, its the same crap over and over every weekd. Screeching at the top of his lungs. SO annoying!

136. James -
Actually there wasn't a "bottom two", Lyndsay. Ryan said the results were "in no particular order", so it's unknown who the low vote-getters were.
I am sorry to see Allison go. She rocked it last night in her final performance.

i love allison she was my favorite...im totally shot...and ur still my favorite Allison!!!

I AM FROM THE CARIBBEAN AND I THINK AMERICA IS MAD TO LET ALLISON GO. IF ADAM DOES NOT WISH I AM NO LONGER FOLLOWING THIS SHOW. MAYBE I SHOULD TAKE VACATION AND COME TO AMERICA TO VOTE.

139. Yahoo! Music User -
This forum is UNBELIEVABLE! All this screaming about Danny Gokey - his vocals are so much better than Kris'! I don't know how Kris has gotten this far, except that I'm sure he has the young girls' votes because he's cute. The show is a joke. Allison and Adam are the two most talented people on the show. Kris SHOULD NOT be there.

140. CuriousGal -
There is NO comparison between Adam and Danny. Danny doesn't have an original bone in his body. Everyone is watching this show to see what Adam will do next. He is an Entertainer. It may be a singing competition but Entertainment is what sells! Vote for Adam!
