Allison Cut: American Idol Now A Boys' Club

Posted Wed May 6, 2009 7:46pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Last night on American Idol, Simon Cowell predicted that Allison Iraheta's smokin' "Slow Ride" duet with Adam Lambert would save her in this competition. Usually, Simon is right. But sadly, this time he got it wrong.

Yes, Allison was axed tonight, ironically during Rock 'N' Roll Week, which should have been her strongest week yet. Since I'm an Allison fan who until this evening was still dreaming of an Adam/Allison finale in just two weeks' time, this news, of course, did not rock my world.

Tonight's Rock 'N' Roll results show actually kicked off quite rockingly, with perhaps the only group singalong number that I didn't find unbearably cruise-shippy this entire season, because a) it featured Slash!!!!; b) it featured an Alice Cooper song!!!!; and c) it offered some more Adam-on-Allison duet action!!!! (in the G-rated sense, of course).

But then, when my predicted eliminated contestant, Kris Allen, was the first to be sent to safety by Ryan Seacrest (the look on his face indicated that he was as shocked as I was), my heart sank for the little redheaded girl.

And then, when Adam made it through, I was filled with mixed emotions: I was absolutely elated, naturally, that there'd be no near-elimination scare for Adam like there was last week, but fearful that it was just down to Allison and Danny Gokey in the bottom two.

Danny of course deserved to go home based on last night's laughably shrieky mangling of a perfectly good Aerosmith song and his narcolepsy-inducingly boring Styx duet with Kris. But since he'd never been in the bottom before, while Allison had landed there more times than anyone in the remaining final four, it didn't look so good for her. Still, I clung to my rock 'n' roll fantasy that she would once again be safe.

Well, after 64 million votes--the highest vote tally outside of an Idol finale--Allison was cut, despite her solid "Crybaby" performance last night. I guess 64 million people CAN be wrong. And I was the one who was the crybaby upon learning these results. I will truly miss her girl power in this competition. American Idol is now officially a boys' club, as this is the first season in which the final three have all been male. Boo!

I honestly don't know why the Idol audience never really connected with Allison. She had the vocal chops, that was undeniable. And being the only teenager in the top 10, she should have had the tween demographic all sewn up. Just being the sole female in the top four should have been enough to give her some edge over Danny and Kris. She was the only person of color in the final four, too. That should have helped as well, but it did not.

So what was it? Was it her Manic-Panic'd hair? Because her tresses looked better than ever last night, thanks to her sleek new extensions. Was it her shy demeanor? Because she sure wasn't shy when she sassed back to Simon last night. I just don't know. All I know is, America got it wrong here. I truly believe that.

I only hope that Allison follows in the platinum-plated footsteps of fellow fourth-placer Chris Daughtry. Daughtry, one of the most successful AmIdol alums ever, performed his new single "No Surprise" on tonight's results show, and he proved once again that sometimes when a contestant comes in fourth, that contestant actually wins.

So I am rooting that Allison has a Daughtry-esque career path ahead of her, because she's still a winner in my book.

I guess the only way Allison would have had a chance is if she had a dead husband. And would have taken away some of Karokee Gokey's sympathy votes... that all those tone-deaf Americans are still casting for the Screechman.

I am so happy Kris made it through another week... in spite of Simon (and the producers) throwing him under the bus on Tuesday, when is was clearly Danny who should have received that negative treatment for the worst-ever performance on AI.

First of all, since I was one who "didn't" vote, I guess I can't complain when I don't agree on who got booted....

The fact is that at this point, it is sad to see any of the Idols get the boot.... But on the flip-side,,,, since the final 4 (last night) had made it this far,,,, it won't be the last time we will hear any of them, no matter which ones get the boot from here on out... They are all winners to everyone!!!!!!

Please be sure to vote!!!

Can't imagine why Allison got cut.....she is far and away the most natural talent in that group, outshines even Adam,IMO. With all she has to offer, we'll definitely be hearing more from this kid. Go Allison !

I just can't understand how Kriss it's still in the competition!!!!! I was hoping for a Adam, Danny and Allison finale. Kriss sucks!

I am a Danny fan all the way, even the judges say he is on perfect pitch every week (with the exception of that last note this week). Allison has been in the bottom three every week for weeks why are you all surprised?
Kris is so boring he should have gone and I think he will be next.
I don't understand the Danny hate, this is not a dance competition. He is a good singer. Allison and Adam are too someone has to go everyweek. If you don't like the results vote more!

I AM SHOCKED!!!!!!! ALison gone how can that be... she was actually the favorite for me after Adam who of course is the best but she was very good and I can't believe that Kris is still in the competition... he should have left last night and next week Danny and leave the good finale to the two best Adam and Alison and they should have fought it out........ IF AMERICA is truly voting on singing ability only Alison would still be there but they aren't - they voted for Scott because of his physical impearment and I do like Danny but he is getting the poor Danny sympathy votes............ COME ON AMERICA do better next week!!!!!! Simon should have been able to save her!!!!!

I am soooo glad Kris made it through, didn't care who went through otherwise. Kris is by far the best talent this season!! Plus a nice guy, he and Matt were the ones who helped all the other contestants with their musical knowledge. Granted, it should have been Danny who went but as long as Kris makes the finals I will be a happy woman!!

Dnny and Adam are the best! I can't understant all this Danny hate. He is really goog. Out Kris!

First of all 64 million people did not vote....about 10 million people voted over and over again. So yes the voters got it wrong.
Having said that, this result show was assinine.
Why was Kris even in the top ten? The guy may be cute and all, but watch him sing....painful for us to watch. Added to that, he has a very limited vocal range, and is just an average singer at best. Even if he were to win and pull off a miracle, he will have no career in music.
Danny, Im sick of you, you just cant sing at all. Growling is NOT singing....and sidenote, the goatee with no mustache look is ridiculous, especially with your dumb glasses.
Adam will and should rightfully win. He is the only one left with even a chance at selling music.
Allison leaving robs viewers of pairing the two biggest talents of this season from competing until the end. WHAT A COLOLSAL RIPPOFF! (not to Paula, Allison doesnt lip synch)

I tell you, the looks on their faces say it all. When Kris got the news, he showed he's a genuinely humble guy. When Allison got her news, she was clearly disappointed but nobly taking it stride, and Danny showed genuine sympathy for Alison as was not going to rain on her parade. And as for Adam... the look on his face showed he was the same cocky, classless, glam rocker he's been all season.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? what a joke allison gone and the two no talents still there? how about voting adam off next than the final will be the least watched in history. i have been hooked on idol for 7 years and last night the line finally broke and i'm swimming away. danny and kris arn't even in taylor hicks league and they will sink into the sunset as soon as the show ends.

This season will be Vote For The Worst's first victory.

Why? Because the karokee king will be in the finals with Adam, and Gokey will somehow get more votes and win. Looking back, you can see the fix has been in since day-one.

All seson the judges have been easy on Danny instead of telling the truth, that his performances were pure karokee, they instead kept using the sympathy card by saying 'we feel his pain,' 'we know where your coming from,' etc. (even Simon did this).

It's also obvious that Kris is a treat to their beloved Danny. They hoped throwing him under the bus this week would do the trick, but they were wrong. To get Danny in the finals next week they'll slaughter Kris, and make Danny out to be the come-back kid.

For some reason, they want hokey Dokey as their new Idol and don't want Adam because he's just too over the top (and gay). They won't mind him being a runner up (like Clay) so they can still take credit for his success, but not have him represent the show.

#115, I agree completely! He cares only for himself and doesn't care who goes as long as it isn't him. Hopefully, next week will be his swan song.

My thoughts on Allison are that she was a Suzy-One-Note (I mean "HuhNote!"). The Princess of Gruntington. A Growler Monkey. Just as Adam's screaming is starting to become UNspecial, Allison's ability to sing every song EXACTLY the same (and that's not a compliment) began to wear thin with me weeks ago. The first half of the Bonnie Raitt song she sang several weeks ago proves she CAN sing nicely. She needed to do more of that IMHO. She's young and needs some real training, but she could be someone someday maybe.

Well, I hate to rub it in everyone's faces, but I've been saying it for weeks - 1. Adam 2. Kris 3. Danny.

I like Alison better than Danny, but he's got the sympathy vote going for him. There's only been one time that he really impressed me & that was last week during the Rat Pack week.
I'm truly glad that Kris is still in because he is very talented & seems more of a serious musician than performer. Danny seems to be riding the wave his friend set him on and he just is going along. Adam is a kick-ass performer & an amazing vocalist, but sometimes too over the top for conservative America.

glad to see others see it too (115 &118) that Adam is stuck on himself!! Hopefully Allison will follow in Daughtry footsteps meaning that 4 will be her lucky number. America got all caught up in the "Adam is sooo great" thing this year.....he truly belongs on a theater stage not American Idol stage...

i liked her she was really good sad to see her go
