Allison Cut: American Idol Now A Boys' Club

Posted Wed May 6, 2009 7:46pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Last night on American Idol, Simon Cowell predicted that Allison Iraheta's smokin' "Slow Ride" duet with Adam Lambert would save her in this competition. Usually, Simon is right. But sadly, this time he got it wrong.

Yes, Allison was axed tonight, ironically during Rock 'N' Roll Week, which should have been her strongest week yet. Since I'm an Allison fan who until this evening was still dreaming of an Adam/Allison finale in just two weeks' time, this news, of course, did not rock my world.

Tonight's Rock 'N' Roll results show actually kicked off quite rockingly, with perhaps the only group singalong number that I didn't find unbearably cruise-shippy this entire season, because a) it featured Slash!!!!; b) it featured an Alice Cooper song!!!!; and c) it offered some more Adam-on-Allison duet action!!!! (in the G-rated sense, of course).

But then, when my predicted eliminated contestant, Kris Allen, was the first to be sent to safety by Ryan Seacrest (the look on his face indicated that he was as shocked as I was), my heart sank for the little redheaded girl.

And then, when Adam made it through, I was filled with mixed emotions: I was absolutely elated, naturally, that there'd be no near-elimination scare for Adam like there was last week, but fearful that it was just down to Allison and Danny Gokey in the bottom two.

Danny of course deserved to go home based on last night's laughably shrieky mangling of a perfectly good Aerosmith song and his narcolepsy-inducingly boring Styx duet with Kris. But since he'd never been in the bottom before, while Allison had landed there more times than anyone in the remaining final four, it didn't look so good for her. Still, I clung to my rock 'n' roll fantasy that she would once again be safe.

Well, after 64 million votes--the highest vote tally outside of an Idol finale--Allison was cut, despite her solid "Crybaby" performance last night. I guess 64 million people CAN be wrong. And I was the one who was the crybaby upon learning these results. I will truly miss her girl power in this competition. American Idol is now officially a boys' club, as this is the first season in which the final three have all been male. Boo!

I honestly don't know why the Idol audience never really connected with Allison. She had the vocal chops, that was undeniable. And being the only teenager in the top 10, she should have had the tween demographic all sewn up. Just being the sole female in the top four should have been enough to give her some edge over Danny and Kris. She was the only person of color in the final four, too. That should have helped as well, but it did not.

So what was it? Was it her Manic-Panic'd hair? Because her tresses looked better than ever last night, thanks to her sleek new extensions. Was it her shy demeanor? Because she sure wasn't shy when she sassed back to Simon last night. I just don't know. All I know is, America got it wrong here. I truly believe that.

I only hope that Allison follows in the platinum-plated footsteps of fellow fourth-placer Chris Daughtry. Daughtry, one of the most successful AmIdol alums ever, performed his new single "No Surprise" on tonight's results show, and he proved once again that sometimes when a contestant comes in fourth, that contestant actually wins.

So I am rooting that Allison has a Daughtry-esque career path ahead of her, because she's still a winner in my book.

78. I have noticed! He is so egotistical these days. And it really seems as if no one likes him, not just Kris. Allison didnt even hug him. He has got all those idiots who vote for him fooled thinking he's a nice guy.

UNBELIEVABLE! How on earth could Allison have gotten less votes than Scream Queen Gokey and boring Kris? I won't be watching the rest of the Idol season, now that there's 2/3rds boredom to just 1/3rd talent. Allison will be a rock star soon and long after Kris and Gokey are forgotten. ALLISON, I'LL BE BUYING YOUR ALBUM!

I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE ALLISON WAS VOTED OFF. IT HAS TO BE A MISTAKE. DID EVERYONE HAVE THEIR VOLUMN CONTROLS TURNED DOWN TUESDAY NIGHT? KRIS'S PERFORMANCE LEFT ALOT TO BE DESIRED AND DANNY WAS WORSE THAN HIM. EVEN DANNY SAID HE LAUGHED AFTER WATCHING HIMSELF. ALLISON WAS CONSISTENTLY GOOD EVERY WEEK AND WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE. ALLISON WILL BE FINE IN HER PROFESSIONAL CAREER NO DOUBT BUT SHE SHOULD NOT BE THE ONE VOTED OFF. IT'S OBVIOUS ADAM WILL WIN AMERICAN IDOL, I JUST WISH IT WAS GOING TO BE MORE OF A COMPETION. HOW CAN IT BE NOW WITH ADAM AND THE GOOF BALLS! TOO BAD. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE EXCITING AND MORE OF A COMPETION WITH ADAM AND ALLISON.AMERICA GOT IT WRONG!

America, what is wrong with you? This is what happens when I don't get to vote -- I was on a plane returning home and missed the show. I can't believe that Allison got voted off before Hokey Gokey. Although I like Kris, based on what I read about his performance, I thought he or Hokey Gokey would be the one to get the boot. Instead, we have to suffer through listening to Gokey for another week. I have a horrible feeling that Gokey is going to make it to the finals against Adam. I read on this blog a few weeks ago that some people think Gokey is like Taylor whathisname. I think that's an insult to Taylor. At least Taylor had good taste in music. I think that all those conservative middle America types can't stand to think that someone like Adam, who wears eye make-up, could win American Idol, so they keep voting for that talentless Gokey. It was bad enough when Lil Rounds (who has a fantastic voice) got voted off before Gokey or Matt, and now we get this. Well, my only thought is that some of the people who have lost Idol have had better careers than those that won -- i.e. Jennifer Hudson, Daughtrey and Clay Aiken.

This is unbelievable. My jaw literally dropped when I saw Allison and Adam's duet because it was just total awesome. I just can't believe she was sent home! I think this is gonna be the case like Chris Daughtry's AI season. I mean like, Daughtry is awesome, and America was so stupid for picking Taylor Hicks, who is like nothing compared to Daughtry's fame. I just hope Allison's career will end up like Daughtry. Allison is total amazing. She has a talent that no one can ever had. It's so hard to find people with talents like Allison. I agree with everyone who wants Allison and Adam in the finals. I wished Allison a great career. 4th place doesn't mean bye-bye. It means a great singer will born!!!

it is so ghoulish that they keep voting for that talentless creep that is only on there by exploiting his dead wife's memory, hes ugly, his singing is ehhh, the only idol I would buy or could imagine anyone buying was Alison, here is a peek at the future should the ghoul win. Now,next on Regis and Kelly, american idol winner danny gokely and that grey haired guy

ummm, Carla S #84. ya might want to watch the last couple of minutes last night again. Danny was the FIRST person that Allison hugged. Get over your hatred honey, lol. There are lots of us Danny fans!

Next to Adam, Allison is/was my favorite. I voted like mad for her every week. This girl really could/does hold her own. Unfortunately, there are so many variables that play out in the end, odds were against her. I still say too much of AI is over-analyzed. Our loss. I can't wait to hear what she comes out with as a solo artist -- love to see her follow/do something like Alanis Morrisette. Allison has the voice, the maturity will come, but, more importantly, she needs to get/pick great material.

I am so tired of Danny Gokey I can't see straight. Inauthentic. Impressed with himself. Shallow. You could superimpose his voice over any song and you could not note any differences. Sad. He is so overrated.

Kris is just a likeable kind of guy. He's not a standout, however. People have said coffeehouse guitar guy-yeah that fits, though I'd like to see him do something 80s like the Style Council genre [great band].

Adam is by far the best contestant of this, or, any season. He has incredible vocals, presence and has taken more chances every week than any contestant. Adam deserves to win this year.

With the exception of Slash, the Alice Cooper number was a disaster and that's too bad, because hard-headed Alice rocked in his day.

Paula's lip-synching was awful. That techno garbage isn't music, duh. Instead of showcasing talent, it emphasizes no talent, add tons of electronics to fill in the gaps. Take away her dance moves and you had nothing. What was the AI audience applauding for? Don't encourage that type of performance, people.

Daughtery was good. Fame has obviously made an impression upon him and I'm afraid, took away some of his down-to-earth every day guy likability, but he has a huge following. Must be doing something right.

wait... kris and danny are still on the show but allison isn't.
God, i hate the pity vote.

Yea, there are tons of danny fans out there and hopefully there will be a PTA meeting or knitting club next Tuesday night and they'll be too busy to vote.

Everyone thought she was a great singer. I thought she would win second after adam!

What do u mean she was the only person of color left????? It shouldn't have matter what color she was! She could sing and that's all that mattered!

Lambert says he got carried away, but not sorry
