Allison Cut: American Idol Now A Boys' Club

Posted Wed May 6, 2009 7:46pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Last night on American Idol, Simon Cowell predicted that Allison Iraheta's smokin' "Slow Ride" duet with Adam Lambert would save her in this competition. Usually, Simon is right. But sadly, this time he got it wrong.

Yes, Allison was axed tonight, ironically during Rock 'N' Roll Week, which should have been her strongest week yet. Since I'm an Allison fan who until this evening was still dreaming of an Adam/Allison finale in just two weeks' time, this news, of course, did not rock my world.

Tonight's Rock 'N' Roll results show actually kicked off quite rockingly, with perhaps the only group singalong number that I didn't find unbearably cruise-shippy this entire season, because a) it featured Slash!!!!; b) it featured an Alice Cooper song!!!!; and c) it offered some more Adam-on-Allison duet action!!!! (in the G-rated sense, of course).

But then, when my predicted eliminated contestant, Kris Allen, was the first to be sent to safety by Ryan Seacrest (the look on his face indicated that he was as shocked as I was), my heart sank for the little redheaded girl.

And then, when Adam made it through, I was filled with mixed emotions: I was absolutely elated, naturally, that there'd be no near-elimination scare for Adam like there was last week, but fearful that it was just down to Allison and Danny Gokey in the bottom two.

Danny of course deserved to go home based on last night's laughably shrieky mangling of a perfectly good Aerosmith song and his narcolepsy-inducingly boring Styx duet with Kris. But since he'd never been in the bottom before, while Allison had landed there more times than anyone in the remaining final four, it didn't look so good for her. Still, I clung to my rock 'n' roll fantasy that she would once again be safe.

Well, after 64 million votes--the highest vote tally outside of an Idol finale--Allison was cut, despite her solid "Crybaby" performance last night. I guess 64 million people CAN be wrong. And I was the one who was the crybaby upon learning these results. I will truly miss her girl power in this competition. American Idol is now officially a boys' club, as this is the first season in which the final three have all been male. Boo!

I honestly don't know why the Idol audience never really connected with Allison. She had the vocal chops, that was undeniable. And being the only teenager in the top 10, she should have had the tween demographic all sewn up. Just being the sole female in the top four should have been enough to give her some edge over Danny and Kris. She was the only person of color in the final four, too. That should have helped as well, but it did not.

So what was it? Was it her Manic-Panic'd hair? Because her tresses looked better than ever last night, thanks to her sleek new extensions. Was it her shy demeanor? Because she sure wasn't shy when she sassed back to Simon last night. I just don't know. All I know is, America got it wrong here. I truly believe that.

I only hope that Allison follows in the platinum-plated footsteps of fellow fourth-placer Chris Daughtry. Daughtry, one of the most successful AmIdol alums ever, performed his new single "No Surprise" on tonight's results show, and he proved once again that sometimes when a contestant comes in fourth, that contestant actually wins.

So I am rooting that Allison has a Daughtry-esque career path ahead of her, because she's still a winner in my book.

LP- surprised you didn't mention Gwen Stefani's return to her No Doubt self. I was tired of the clothes and high heels she wears on her solo act. She was hoping around like it was 1996! But alas, Gwen is not just a girl. She is a full fledged WOMAN. Push ups and all!

I live in Milwaukee and am so tired on Danny. Never liked him and can't figure out why so many people do. Allison rocked and she'll keep on rocking. Look for Danny to have a Taylor Hicks-like career.

23. Barton -
If Gokey wins, he will be another Taylor Hicks...... Just a suggestion on how to get Gokey out next week. Pick a friend and one of you votes exclusively for Adam and the other one votes exclusively for Kris. Great job on this post... my fav by a long shot!!!

It's so sad. America majorly disappointed again. Danny deserved to go home on so many levels, I can't even list them here. Last night was horrid. All his other performances were just blah. What is it about him that people love??????????? I don't get it. And never will. I really believe someone out there has invented a computer program or something that autodials his number on Tuesday nights. What else makes sense??

It's so sad. But I really feel and hope that this isn't the last of Allison. For one, I know that Adam will do a duet with her - when he wins of course. He seems to genuinely care about her so that's a comforting thought.

Danny????????? Really?????????? Really America????????? Danny???????

If he wins..........

21. Give me a BREAK!!!! Danny was such an [profane] last night. So based on your reasoning, HE should have gone home. Allison didn't argue. She just explained her song choice in good fun. Geez

26. Barton -
Yes... Adam sucks.... and I bet he does it better than you!!!

Lame-o Gokey survived? After that godawful fingernails on blackboard "singing last night? And Allison goes?
Such a travesty!
Allison has more talent than Gokey by far.
The only good thing about it is that her votes will probably go to Adam, which should help Adam from now on.
That's a consolation, but I'll miss her.
She should have been in the final with Adam!

I'm so sad about Allison...but...I so called this a week ago (sad to say). My hubby can vouch for me. I also knew Kris would be safe because of the teeny-bopper texting votes (that's why it always appears he's going home according to Dial Idol). Matt's votes went to Danny...plus his fan base was going to get carpul tunnel dialing to make sure he was safe. Adam was gonna be the safest, period - no matter how polarized fans are with him. That left Allison.

Hated Paula tonight. Sad to see the drugs & age have not treated her well performance-wise.

Do you think the "going home" song next season should be "No Surprise"? I'd laugh every week.

Let's face facts, while I like Allison enough to have voted repeatedly (alternately for her and Danny as he IS from my home state and also b/c I feel ONE bad note doesn't mean to throw in the towel from ONE time on ONE song. He even had the human side show that he saw it was laughable and a horror show track he joked of to be on some movie in this soon.) . She did land in the bottom MANY times prior to end up there. I mean Janis Joplin is not that well recieved by the younger generation and if she'd done heart or something more current it could have been more rocking and unexpected for her I feel . I also feel Danny in hindsight could have been more likely safe instead of waiting to the end to find out if he'd done Wanted dead or alive by Bon Jovi or something more suited for him also.

I see it's the PRE TEENS that are showing how much they vote with Kris being the one that seemed even shocked he was safe and even mentioned first, hear those pre teens screaming?

DO NOT Rule them out to show Kris hang in there further no matter what song he sings now from those young female voters.
It is pathetic but this has basically become their show. I feel it is tragic to see Allison go and not get to perform more there but she will be on the tour and she has a career waiting for her. As Daughtry put it he felt the world end for 30 seconds then. See how he is doing in the spot Allison ended up in now? ROCK ON ALLISON, start working on the cd, can't wait to hear it. Just mix it up with other than Janis Joplin type tunes please.

Can I rant some more? Danny???????????????? Really???????????????????

Is there someone who can explain it to me?????? OMG

31. Yahoo! Music User -
The problem is there are more teeny bopper girls who vote then anyone else. Cute out weighs talent with them.

Gokey is too fat, clumsy, and boring, to be the "AmericanIdol".
If he wins I won't be watching AI anymore.
There's a reason he has become the "vote for the worst" choice.

33. Margaret -
Margaret Santhan.....I am devasted with the result. America does not know a real talent. Allison is one young talent who has soul and energy. I have never seen any lady so far in this program that has so much talent and for someone who is so young. Based on performance she has given her best every week. It is not even the comment of Simon Cowell. America, you have to wake up to and understand what is talent because you always make a wrong choise. This young lady will shine with her pwoerful voice. Gold Bless her.

34. Joseph D -
I never understood why people liked Alison. She never did anything for me. Gokey had by far the better performances overall. Obviously Rock isn't his strong suit, whcih is why these last weeks should not be themes. Lets make next week Christian Rock and Danny would dominate.

BTW, Ryan specifically stated that the way people were told they were safe was NOT the actual vote count. So most likely Gokey was not the 3rd vote getter, but either 1st or 2nd.

The writer of this blog should try and be a little objective. Go home and cry.

Does anyone watch the show "Z Rock" ? the rock band plays kid parties by day and bars by night, anywho, Kris' career wil be the former venue. No shock here, Kris Danny and Allison are all in the same boat..sinking. Yep, I joined the Adam band wagon finally, cuz he could hang with Slash and not get laughed at.

36. Yahoo! Music User -
Wow -- based on most of the comments here, everyone thought Danny definitely should have left and Allison stayed -- which is what I feel, too. And a poll on DialIdol.com (albeit not scientific) also felt he should have left. I'm wondering if most of America DID want Danny gone..?? I hate to give any attention to them, but just have to pose one possible theory: VoteForTheWorst.com They have been asking visitors to vote for Danny, as he is the worst of the contestants left, and maybe it's working. If that's true, it is a Cry-Baby shame!

37. Joseph D -
just go to google and type "adam lambert", then click "images". Is that who you want to be an American Idol? Guy is a disgrace.

38. Joseph D -
forgot to mention, Slash is a complete sell-out and should realize its not 1985.

39. Guy W -
Post 35 - Adam would be miles better at Christian rock than Gokey. And at ANY other kind of rock too.
Adam can rock. Gokey can't.
I see Gokey having a career on some cruise ship, singing old standards like that "Come Rain or Come Shine" he did that other night. It's the only kind of music he does reasonably well. And all the old fogies on the cruise ships would think it was great.

jdelfino100 - you are absolutely wrong. I would love to see next week be christian rock week- and Adam would still be the BEST!! Check him out in the ten commandments on youtube. He was AHHHMAZING!

Gokey sucks.
