Allison Cut: American Idol Now A Boys' Club

Posted Wed May 6, 2009 7:46pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Last night on American Idol, Simon Cowell predicted that Allison Iraheta's smokin' "Slow Ride" duet with Adam Lambert would save her in this competition. Usually, Simon is right. But sadly, this time he got it wrong.

Yes, Allison was axed tonight, ironically during Rock 'N' Roll Week, which should have been her strongest week yet. Since I'm an Allison fan who until this evening was still dreaming of an Adam/Allison finale in just two weeks' time, this news, of course, did not rock my world.

Tonight's Rock 'N' Roll results show actually kicked off quite rockingly, with perhaps the only group singalong number that I didn't find unbearably cruise-shippy this entire season, because a) it featured Slash!!!!; b) it featured an Alice Cooper song!!!!; and c) it offered some more Adam-on-Allison duet action!!!! (in the G-rated sense, of course).

But then, when my predicted eliminated contestant, Kris Allen, was the first to be sent to safety by Ryan Seacrest (the look on his face indicated that he was as shocked as I was), my heart sank for the little redheaded girl.

And then, when Adam made it through, I was filled with mixed emotions: I was absolutely elated, naturally, that there'd be no near-elimination scare for Adam like there was last week, but fearful that it was just down to Allison and Danny Gokey in the bottom two.

Danny of course deserved to go home based on last night's laughably shrieky mangling of a perfectly good Aerosmith song and his narcolepsy-inducingly boring Styx duet with Kris. But since he'd never been in the bottom before, while Allison had landed there more times than anyone in the remaining final four, it didn't look so good for her. Still, I clung to my rock 'n' roll fantasy that she would once again be safe.

Well, after 64 million votes--the highest vote tally outside of an Idol finale--Allison was cut, despite her solid "Crybaby" performance last night. I guess 64 million people CAN be wrong. And I was the one who was the crybaby upon learning these results. I will truly miss her girl power in this competition. American Idol is now officially a boys' club, as this is the first season in which the final three have all been male. Boo!

I honestly don't know why the Idol audience never really connected with Allison. She had the vocal chops, that was undeniable. And being the only teenager in the top 10, she should have had the tween demographic all sewn up. Just being the sole female in the top four should have been enough to give her some edge over Danny and Kris. She was the only person of color in the final four, too. That should have helped as well, but it did not.

So what was it? Was it her Manic-Panic'd hair? Because her tresses looked better than ever last night, thanks to her sleek new extensions. Was it her shy demeanor? Because she sure wasn't shy when she sassed back to Simon last night. I just don't know. All I know is, America got it wrong here. I truly believe that.

I only hope that Allison follows in the platinum-plated footsteps of fellow fourth-placer Chris Daughtry. Daughtry, one of the most successful AmIdol alums ever, performed his new single "No Surprise" on tonight's results show, and he proved once again that sometimes when a contestant comes in fourth, that contestant actually wins.

So I am rooting that Allison has a Daughtry-esque career path ahead of her, because she's still a winner in my book.

She will be missed.

Glad to see Kris made it out alive, I think he is great. Though, I would have thought Danny was going to be out tonight.

Ok, who the sam hell is voting for Gokey??!!! I thought this competition, you consider the singers over all performances. Can they sing country? can they sing rock? can they sing rat pack? Overall, I really think Allison out sang, out staged, out personalitied (?) Gokey. If this is going the way America is voting, its going to end up being Adam and Danny. That just Sucks!!

Oh I get the first comment!!

I, too, am shocked. And I agree with your hope that Allison has a stellar come from this. She deserves it!

After Danny's horrid performance, he should've gone this week. But Allison is young. I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up on Disney in the future.

I think it's not as much as Allison's fault, but Danny has a huge following because of his back story.

Allison Got Hosed ! Hokey Gokey must go! He screwed up the lyrics for Renegade and Dream on and no one caught it.

Allison certainly went out in style. She simply waled thru her song and left a very memorable impression on many. How in the world could those priceless and unforgettable vocals be out voted by the hideous sound of Danny. Sure, he has had some good performances but he certainly NEVER out sung Allison. I will be anxiously awaiting to hear great things from her!!!! AMERICA, YOU GOT THIS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck Allison!!! Your future is definitely very bright!!!!!!

It should have been Danny. Poor Allison- I feel bad but I am a one person voter. She was wonderful and I look forward to hearing her do her own stuff! I loved Slash- and I can't wait to hear who is on his album with him. I only know of one I can bank on that won't be singing....

I am glad Chris Daughtry has done well for himself, but the facial hair just made me think Captain Ahab. I kept wanting him to put on some vertical navy stripes and sing me a sea shanty. And smoke a pipe of course.

Matt left and his voters went to the guy most like him - Kris. Adam voters got scared so they all voted for him instead of splitting their votes for Allison. Poor girl, she deserved to stay more than Danny!

I caught Hokey Gokey's messed up lyrics- wish Simon would have. Kris still seemed mad at him tonight.

okay..who the Sam hell keeps voting dopey gokey in??!! Overall, I think Allison did better than Danny. She has more personality, more stage presence, better control with her voice. Unfortunately, I think its going to end up being Adam and Danny. But the way this is going, it could end up being Kris and Danny!!

I am SO depressed. She was my 2nd fave after Adam, a true talent... really, really would have liked to see her in the finale. Why didn't she get more votes? I loved her from the beginning. Hope she goes on to kick much butt in her recording career.

Nobody has ever mentioned Gokey's weight- but two nights in a row I thought he looked pudgy. First was those horrible pants last night with the vest (on ROCK night, mind you.) And tonight it was the Ford commercial. He shouldn't be a paper cut out. Very unflattering.

Recount!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alison will be all right and will have a bright future. American Idol show and the American viewers have lost any credibility. What next? Adam going home?

17. Raisa -
After Danny screamed that note last night I thought he would go home. But instead America got it WRONG. VERY VERY VERY WRONG. I hope Allison doesn't become some kind of whiny Disney star. She has to much talent. I agree with you LP she should have the Chris Daughtry path.

18. MARY JANE -
Watch it back!!! Simon's face says it all!!! What an absolute shame!!! She definitely deserved to stay!!! It should have been Adam and Allison in the final two!!!! I agree, it's based on all of the performances America!!!! Allison definitely has shown up and delivered on everyone of hers!!!! That's more than I can say for CHOKEY GOKEY!!!!

19. Yahoo! Music User -
what a shocker! danny should have gone... if during rock week the Other Rocker can't get votes losing to 2 wimpy performers, the audience has got it wrong.
the competition is now officially over. Adam vs Them. I'm not interested in looking any more.
AND Adam may yet lose if this is what Voting America is capable of.
And ironically Daughtry's appearance tonight should be a great reassurance to Allison...

20. Stephanie -
Just to clarify, Ryan repeatedly said that the results were in complete random order. Danny was not necessarily in the bottom two.
Getting in arguments with the judges NEVER wins over voters. Lil Rounds had her little spats with Simon and look where that got her. It just makes people uncomfortable.
ps Adam sucks.

AP - Rihanna on Friday described the horror she felt as her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown was biting and punching her during a violent argument in February, saying she saw "no soul in his eyes." "There was no… More »
