American Idol Results: Adam Lands In Bottom 3, Pigs Fly, Hades Freezes Over, Etc.

Posted Wed Apr 29, 2009 7:24pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

As tonight's American Idol results show kicked off, sourpuss Simon Cowell summed up last night's Rat Pack-themed episode in a most un-Simon-like manner: "Everybody was good."

Yes, such across-the-board praise was very uncharacteristic of him, but Simon is usually right, and he was right in this case for sure. Everyone was good last night. (Especially Adam Lambert. Duh. But--SPOILER ALERT!--more on Adam later.) All five contestants had excellent material to work with on Rat Pack Night--there's a reason songs like "My Funny Valentine" and "Someone To Watch Over Me" have stood the test of time, after all--and they all crooned their classic tunes extremely well. Even Danny Gokey impressed me, and my regular readers know that when it comes to Danny, I'm not usually too easily impressed!

So there was no obvious clunker last night, no standout cringe-inducing performance that had "elimination" written all over it. Therefore, whoever went home tonight, it would be a "shocker" of sorts.

But I had no idea how shocking tonight's results show would truly be.

So Ryan Seacrest started tonight's elimination process by setting Allison Iraheta and Danny Gokey to one side, and Kris Allen and Matt Giraud to the other. This left season-long frontrunner and my personal favorite Idol contestant of ALL eight seasons, Adam Lambert, standing all by his awesome lonesome in the middle, being put in that unfair and uncomfortable position of having to choose which two he thought he deserved to stand with.

Being awesome, Adam naturally chose to join last night's two awesome-est singers, Allison and Danny. Duh!

Except...he was wrong.

People, I hope you're sitting down as you read this next sentence: Adam Lambert, along with Matt and Kris, WAS IN THE BOTTOM THREE TONIGHT.

No, dearest readers, that was not a typo. Today was not Opposite Day. The producers of Punk'd had not invaded the American Idol set. For some reason that will forever remain as mysterious as the origins of Stonehenge or the evolutionary order of the chicken and egg, viewers were apparently not feelin' Adam's "Feeling Good" performance last night, and they put Adam in the bottom.

At this point, I was feeling pretty frickin' BAD. My face was as red as that staircase Adam descended while delivering what surely should have been a TOP THREE performance last night. I made a vow right then and there if Adam got cut, I was going to boycott Idol. For reals.

Maybe it was just the Feeling Good Curse. See, back in season 6, semi-finalists Leslie Hunt and A.J. Tabaldo both sang the Nina Simone signature song in the same week--and both went home. But if there was anyone who could break such a curse, I absolutely assumed it would be Adam.

But then...Kris was sent back to safety. Meaning the bottom two were...Matt and ADAM.

I seriously felt like I was going to have a cardiac arrest. I was hyperventilating. Breathing into a paper sack. Clutching at my chest like Redd Foxx. Quivering like I had some sort of rare palsy. "It's just a show, just a show, just a show," I told myself over and over, hugging my knees and shivering and rocking from side to side like a mental patient. "If Adam Lambert gets cut, it won't be the end of the world..."

But it WOULD be the end of Idol, at least for me. It would be the biggest, most heartbreaking shocker in Idol history--worse than Chris Daughtry, Constantine Maroulis, Michael Johns, and Tamyra Gray's eliminations combined.

So the time-killing filler performances by Taylor Hicks and Jamie Foxx seemed to go on for, like, 18 hours, everything running in agonizing underwater slo-mo while I awaited Adam's fate. And then, finally, Ryan Seacrest delivered the news...

Adam was safe. The Feeling Good Curse was broken. Meanwhile, Matt, the last of the wild cards, was cut--and no Judges' Save could save him now.

Phew. But that was close. Waaaay too close. What is wrong with America, putting a league-of-his-own talent like Adam in the bottom two? Results shows like this make me want to move to Canada.

America, DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN NEXT WEEK. Yahoo! Music's workers' comp plan might not cover the ensuing heart attack I will surely suffer if Adam comes this close to elimination again.

Luckily, next week is Rock 'N' Roll Week (with special guest Slash!), so Adam definitely will have the edge...but tonight proved that no one is ever safe. No spot in the finale is ever guaranteed, not even for Adam. So rock the vote next week, Lambert fans!

Parker out.

Adam is not as great as you think. America probably is tired of his shrieking.

2. VictoriaB -
How could Adam be in the bottom three??? What's wrong with those voters? I was totally hyperventilating too (though I felt kind of silly)!! I hope he wins, but now I'm nervous for him! Better luck next week!!! I *heart* you Adam!!!! (Great column Ms. Parker, :^D)

My hands are still shaking. I seriously need some alcohol. America, we have to have a little talk.................... I was this close to crying and certainly would have if Adam was out. Come on!!!!

Personally, I think they did it for the drama and Adam wasn't really in the bottom 2. What else makes sense???

Well, I am very glad that he is still with us, to say the least, and next week is going to be FREAKING great!!!!!!!!!!
Slash?? Do I sense a GnR performance coming on??? By who you ask? ADAM LAMBERT of course!!!!

Oh, Lyndsey, just know that we'll be ready to welcome you with open arms here if the worst does ever come to pass :)

I was glad to see that Americans might not be as blind as I thought when it comes to this show. Adam's rendition was really bad on Tuesday, and people reciprocated that feeling in the voting. Congrats to the viewers for being honest.

I was sad to see Matt go, I think vocally he was shinning above several contestants that are still in the running...but what can you do, near the end, people with talent have to go. And I agree, the judges save was NOT wasted as was pointed out in the show. Matt was well deserving.

I was disappointed that Adam actually picked a side he felt he should be on when Ryan asked him. It was a sign of weakness for me in his character. Clearly it was something he should have refused to pick, and told Ryan that he couldn't. Not a classy move Adam - though also unfair by Ryan. Notice how Jamie F, did NOT say whether Matt and Adam should have been at the bottom....avoiding the question with class....Adam take notes for the future.

All and all a surprising show, some might wonder whether it was setup like this on purpose, with so many people saying Adam has already won, did they try to spice it up today and wake people up? Quite possible.

Just a hunch -- Adam actually came in THIRD in votes. The producers were just trying to make things dramatic.

I think that Adam being so close to elimination will turn out to be a good thing. Don't get me wrong- IT WAS AGONY!!! Having to wait through Kanye- I mean Jamie Foxx's auto tune singing made it excruciating! It is a mistake that Adam's legion of fans will not let happen again. We won't take it for granted that someone else will pick up the slack. It could be the scare that sends him to the finale.
On a performance note- I want to say how great Taylor Hicks did. He reminded me why he won- and why Danny the yeller Gokey WISHES he was Taylor Hicks. Seriously people- Danny?
Let me also say that I believe that Kris and Danny will have a hard time next week with the Rock theme. Just thinking about the songs that Adam will sing gets me all goose pimply! If only he could sing Led Zepplin!!! I hope they do two each so we get to hear him twice!
And since Simon' psychological sabotage didn't work- it will be interesting to see if he goes back to actually judging next week. I think the blow to his ego was good for him.
PS Lyndsey- Idol would have been over for me too. I would probably never have watched it AGAIN! EVER!

7. KizerSoze -
I wouldn't move to Canada so quickly, we would have kicked out Adam long ago lol.

8. Yahoo! Music User -
I voted for Kris, Alison, and Adam ... and a few extra votes for Adam.
AMERICA, PLEASE VOTE FOR ADAM!!! Don't let him be in the bottom ever again!

9. Joshua T -
Adam is in the bottom three because he's arrogant, annoying, and the judges (or the author of this blog) can't contain their panting, moaning, and drooling. It's becoming disgusting, really, and it's making people think that jig is up on Idol.

10. Carrie -
Obviously everyone assumed that Adam would be safe and voted for their second favorite. I did. I voted 10 times for Allison since she's had too many close calls lately and threw in just two for Adam thinking "oh he'll be fine".
Middle America, having your wife die is a tragedy. It does NOT automatically make you a good singer!
That being said, I almost peed when I found out that SLASH is mentoring ADAM! There is a God!!!

11. Danira K -
I AM APPALLED! and crcanos i will report you for abuse! [j/k] lol but Adam REALLY is good! HE NEEEDS TO WIN SO HE CAN PLAY SHOWS AND I CAN BE FRONT ROW SCREAMING LIKE A 13 Y/R OLD GIRL! yes please =]

12. Shelby -
I was shocked as well! But i was hopin Adam would go home!!!! Too bad....but there's always next weeek!

GO DANNY!!!!

13. Michael S -
@ crcanos - I think you need to take a lesson in how to sound like a rocker. I think number 4 is "controlled shrieking".

What probably happened is what happened with Chris Daughtry. His fans thought he was safe and so weren't as inclined to vote as the fans of the other contestants.

Well, let me tell you, this is never going to happen again. What's more, is that Adam is almost a lock to win the whole thing. You have pretty much raised the Adam voting militia now, and who knows how much of a landslide next week will be in his favor.

14. Heather -
From the auditions I though Danny and Adam were good and they'd go far. As time has gone by I've been getting tired of week after week Adam screaming on pitch. Yes, he's a good singer... He's been in musical theatre most of his life and has talent. Tonight he was where I thought he should be, and honestly I was excited by the fact he was in the bottom two... His performance last night was good, but not great. He probably will still get to the final two with Danny, but I'm putting all my votes for Danny.

15. Yahoo! Music User -
That was just way too close tonight. Guess we all need to stop assuming that Adam will be safe just cuz we all love him so much and get off our dead asses and VOTE FOR ADAM!!

16. Yahoo! Music User -
I love Adam. I mean I love Adam. I really do. I watch the show just to see him and then turn the channel to something else. If Adam gets voted off the show will be dull predictable and boring. BUT, I worry about Adam winning because I wonder what the producers will try to make him do. I would hate to see him put out some cheesy lame music that the producers forced him to make.

Chris Daughtry said that getting voted off and not winning was the best thing to happen to him because he got to make his own music with his own band, something he would not have been able to do had he won that year.

So anyways, I love Adam. Love, love, love him. And I want him to stick around till the end since I wait breathlessly each week just to hear him and would miss him insanely if he went. But I sort of would rather not see him win.

I am for Adam but I expected him to be in the bottom two this time. It makes showbiz sense. To put people on the edge of their seats. Who made this happen? Don't blame America. I do not think they did. But you must admit that it surely was dramatic. So showbiz.

18. Yahoo! Music User -
I didn't like Adam very much before because of all the screeching, but now I am a huge fan.

Love your blog btw.

I still haven't recovered. All I can do is remember to breath in and out and vote for the *whole* two hours next week instead of the measly 45 minutes I did this week. This was a shock to the system, and the biggest problem I have is I can't find one moment of his performance that was off. He was fantastic. Beginning to end, and I can't even put into words how off kilter my world is right now.

Matt was a great guy (and an alum of the same college I went to - represent), and I really truly enjoyed him. It's sad that he has to go, but the talent this season is crazy.

As for next week, Adam should shine brightly! Ack - I'm still not composed.

SHRIEKING- 1. crcanos - Adam does not shriek. I would rather hear him hit the high notes in his power house voice all day long- and frequently do listen to his performances- than be yelled at by Danny Okey Dokey Gokey ANYMORE. HE IS A YELLER- And I am telling you that for my sister who feels like she is brow beaten every time she is forced to listen to Danny Gokey. And for whoever said on yesterday's blog that you couldn't listen to Adam in the car with kids- I raise my kids to enjoy all music- We listen to classics, rock, whatever we feel is not crap. You raise your kids on the Jonas Brothers. I want something better for mine! And we are in IOWA- yes THE MIDWEST LOVES ADAM!!!!!!

Lambert says he got carried away, but not sorry

AP

AP - Adam Lambert admits he got carried away with his sexually charged American Music Awards performance, but he's offering no apology. The glam rocker from "American Idol" said on "The Early Show" t… More »
