Danny Gokey Suffers Another Tragic Loss

Posted Tue Mar 31, 2009 1:57pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

I admit I haven't been the most vocal cheerleader for Danny Gokey--I still don't quite understand what all the fuss is about him on American Idol this year, or why he's such a frontrunner. But I'm not made of stone, and so my heart of course went out to him when I learned today that his grandfather just passed away. This loss comes less than a year after the sad passing of Danny's young wife, Sophia, who died from a congenital heart defect just weeks before Danny's Idol audition last year.

According to the religious website everydaychristian.com, Danny returned home to Wisconsin over the weekend for his grandfather's funeral. However, word is he will be performing on tonight's Idol show.

The death of a spouse and a close relative, on top of the immense pressure to perform for Simon Cowell and millions of Idol viewers week after week...that's definitely a lot for someone to handle in such a short timespan. So far Danny is handling himself with grace, and it will be interesting to see what song he picks tonight--maybe something that was a favorite of his grandpa's, or maybe a tune with emotional, meaningful lyrics particularly suited for this situation. The tragedy may very well bring out the best in him, vocally.

It will also be interesting to see if he broaches the topic of his grandfather's death this evening. When AmIdol season 8 started, Danny mentioned Sophia a great deal...but perhaps in light of accusations (true or not) that he was fishing for sympathy votes, to his credit he's stayed away from the subject as of late.

We shall see what happens tonight. In the meantime, please feel free to post your well-wishes and condolences on the message board below.

Dang that's sad. I'm kind of hoping Danny will win, although Adam, who I'm all right with, probably will. We'll see.

I hope people don't try to complain about how he uses his losses for sympathy. I actually really like is voice, along with most other fans of him.

Thanks, LP.

I would like to extend my condolences to Danny and his family for their loss. I would also like to wish him well tonight. The best thing he can do for his grandpa is to sing well. Life goes on. Danny is a person of faith and I'm sure he knows his grandpa is in a good place now.

I feel so bad for him. I can't even imagine what he's going through right now. I have never been a really Gokey fan, but it's impossible not to feel for him. Hopefully he will be able to handle all this pressure. God be with him.

I loved his voice before I knew anything about his personal tragedy.

My heart goes out to him and his family. He will win on merit and talent alone. He reminds me of Marc Broussard or Dave Barnes. Fantastic! Keep up the good work DAnny.

I think that anyone that says he has used the passing of his wife to help him on American Idol is CRAZY! He lost is spouse for heavens sake. We are all so quick to judge. Try to put yourself in his shoes and try to have some grace!
The man has soul a great spirit and man can he sing!!!!!!!!!!

My prayers are with him and his family. That's a lot to go through in such a short time. I couldn't imagine having to deal with the loss of a young spouse and my grandparent.

15. Mike -
Condolences of course. It certainly seems like he values his family. I think its refreshing in a culture that increasingly puts little to no stock in the values Danny (as far as I can see) seems to live by. My best to his family.

God speed. I think Danny is a great singer with a heart of gold

Poor guy. He's a great singer and I think that he's a better vocalist than Adam. Although, Adam will probably will because he's more appealing to the eyes to some. This guy's been through heck and manages to be a darn good singer in the midst of such tragedy. It says a lot about his character and his strength.

Danny: "the Will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you" My sympathies to you and your family on the loss of your grandfather. Sing for him tonight.

Very extremely sad. I'm glad he's a Christian though, my heart goes out to you, Danny! : / Sorry for your loss though, I have recently lost my grandpa too.
