Why Adam Lambert Rocks My World

Posted Wed Mar 25, 2009 7:20pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Last season, David Cook became the first rocker to win American Idol, succeeding where Constantine Maroulis, Bo Bice, and even Chris Daughtry had failed. Idol-worshipping rock fans, myself included, rejoiced at the time. But then David's disappointingly Nickelbackian debut album came out, which made me reluctantly realize that David Cook was really only a "rocker" WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF AMERICAN IDOL. Sure, compared to the nervous-giggly David Archuleta or the bubbly-blonde Brooke White, David Cook (and Carly Smithson and Michael Johns, for that matter) practically sounded like Motorhead or Slayer. But in the real world, he didn't really ROCK.

But you know who does rock? Um, Adam Lambert, that's who. (Who'd you think I was going to say, Scott MacIntyre?) Adam is the best, most awesomely rockin' thing to happen to Idol since Sanjaya Malakar got voted off, and I'll tell you why.

Here's the deal: Real rock 'n' roll is supposed to have some element of danger to it. It's supposed to make people feel a little bit uncomfortable, make concerned PMRC parents fear that their susceptible kids are heading straight to Hades for listening to such decadent, demonic rubbish.

Just think about all of the rock stars over the past decades who've generated shock, awe, disgust, and debate...

Elvis "The Pelvis" Presley (to whom Adam Lambert bears a startling resemblance) wasn't even allowed to be filmed below the belt on The Ed Sullivan Show. The Beatles were ridiculed for having "long" hair that (gasp!) hung past their ears. Newspapers once ran headlines warning mothers not to let their innocent maiden daughters date a debauched Rolling Stone. Led Zeppelin were accused of inserting backwards-masked Satanic messages in their songs. The Sex Pistols' "God Save The Queen" wasn't even officialy listed on the U.K. singles chart, despite going to number one, because of its offensive anti-royalty lyrics. Everyone from Bowie to Bolan to Boy George once outraged onlookers with their gender-bending androgyny. And numerous dark and doomy rockers, from Ozzy Osbourne to Judas Priest to Marilyn Manson to My Chemical Romance, have been blamed for the bad behavior of their more troubled fans.

Now, I'm not saying that Adam necessarily belongs in same league as any of those legendary artists. Not yet, anyway. But I will say that--judging from his extremely polarizing "Ring Of Fire" performance last week--Adam Lambert is a real rocker. Because he shocks people. He gets people's attention, and sometimes gets people downright angry. He makes those who are faint of heart and feeble of mind squirm in their support hose--and that's a good thing. Because that is what real, relevant, radical rock stars, from Mick to Marilyn, do so well.

The bottom line is: Yes, Adam's "Ring Of Fire" was possibly the most controversial performance in Idol history. But on a related note, it was also the BEST performance in Idol history.

Best. Performance. Ever. Because it rocked. I tend to believe that only someone dead from the waist down or neck up would think otherwise.

And it's not just Adam's guyliner, or his leather trousers, or his sultry sneer (which is more Billy Idol than American Idol), or his fringy haircut, or his black nail lacquer that make him a rock star. Yes, those things do help, as image counts a lot in rock 'n' roll. But let's face it, a shopping spree at the local Hot Topic franchise or a few stylist-supplied studded wristbands do not a rocker make. What makes Adam the real deal--the Idol contestant it's acceptable for "cool" people to like, so to speak--is that he means it, man.

Adam rocks because he stays true to himself, like a real rock 'n' roll rebel. If that means freaking out Randy Travis with his goth manicure; or refusing to "go country" on Opry Night (despite that fact that I really do believe maverick Johnny Cash would have appreciated Adam's slinky, Jeff Buckley-inspired remake of "Ring Of Fire"); or belting it out like the Darkness's Justin Hawkins on helium, so be it. Sure, Adam's screechy, Axl-esque wail, particularly on a trippy Egyptian country cover, is not everyone's cup of psychedelic mushroom tea...but come on now, some of the most distinctive singers of the rock genre--Mick Jagger, Robert Smith, Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs, Bob Dylan, Thom Yorke, Kurt Cobain--would've never even made it past the early AmIdol audition rounds for being too "weird." So give Adam points for not sounding like a studio robot and fearlessly letting his freak-flag fly high, week after weirdly wonderful week.

Of course, sadly, all the reasons why I think Adam rocks, and why I'm rocking the vote for him, are why more easily spooked viewers--who think grunge covers of Mariah Carey power ballads are shocking and innovative--probably won't allow Adam to win this show. Because those viewers don't think squirming and feeling uncomfortable are good things. Then factor in all those viral videos of Adam wearing silver corsets and glitter mascara in his Hollywood glam band, or those outrageous photos floating around the Interweb of him smeared head to toe in Burning Man bodypaint or partying hard in semi-drag club-kid attire, and his chances seem especially slim. Slimmer than his legs in his tightest PVC pants.

I just hope Adam's mellow, unplugged "Tracks Of My Tears" performance this week--complete with polish-free fingernails, preppy suit jacket, and slicked-back matinee-idol hairdo--wins over more conservative voters still waking up with nightsweats from last week's "Ring Of Fire." I personally prefer the freaky-deaky Adam, but I understand, strategically, why Adam toned it down this week. It was a smart, salvaging move on his part.

But I also hope, whether he wins or not, Adam does eventually put out the weirdest, wildest, wiggiest indie-electro-goth-pop-metal album in American Idol history. Because I just know it's going to rock harder than anything Cook or Daughtry could ever come up with.

I am officially in love. I have no doubt that Adam will win the competition. I said it before and I'm saying it again. The only person I think can give him a run for his money is Allison. It's going to be a showdown between them. I mean right now I can't even remember what the other contestants sang.

I'm really glad that Adam did what he did tonight. Because it really highlights his range for those who couldn't recognize it before (airheads). And I know he hasn't given it a 100% yet. I'm so excited. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Yay Adam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Did I mention that he totally rocks my world too?? :)

I have loved Adam since the first time I heard him sing and Im a 45 year old conservative lady. That boy has talent and he doesnt scare me one bit. He is awesome and never disappoints.

LP, I love your blog, but some things I completely and totally disagree with. Call him a "rocker" if you want, but there are artists in many genres that don't buckle to what TPTB want them to do.
He isn't going to win, not because of appearance, eyeliner or any other superficial reason. He isn't going to win because his performances are ultra-indulgent andannoying to much of America.
A great range is one thing, needless shrieking to show you can isn't good music. Freddie Mercury, Rob Halford, hell, even King Diamond can all hit those high notes, but seldom does it seem forced as much as when Adam does it. His performance tonight was probably my favorite of his, but even still he sang 90% of it in a forced falsetto which makes me wonder if he can pull off singing in any other way. IMO if he could pull off more of a Joe Elliot vibe, he would endear himself a lot more to the masses.
So, I guess my point is that he's pigeon-holed himself into a style that won't be popular enough to get votes at the end to beat out some folks with more universal appeal. That doesn't make voters stupid or haters, it makes them know what they like. If the show was American Best Vocal Range instead of American Idol, it might be a different story.

Kelly Clarkson Natural Woman was maybe the best Idol performance ever....Adam's Ring of Fire was good...but too love it or hate it to be the best ever.

6. Deahh -
and LP's puppy dog eyes are blinding her because David Cook's "Hello" was much better, just to name one of the top performances I remember.

p.s. Megan! Why oh why did you put us all through that. I can no longer defend you with a straight face.

7. camashe -
Yeah Megan was horrible

Adam is sooo not a rocker. Freakishly talented, yes, but not authentic enough. He comes off as a theater kid auditioning for the part of a rogue glam-rocker. Sorry, I still do not get the Adam-adoration thing. He is so shiny and glossy (and orange, seriously...he's orange) that I have yet to figure out what the heck he really is all about. I happen to like my rockers with some grass roots appeal and authenticity. Rockers don't have to squeal to make a point (or hit a note), wear black polish or drown in bronzer. Guess its all in your definition of what a rocker is.

With the exception of Allison, Adam managed to make everybody look like amateurs singing karaoke tonight. His performance personified how well this guy can sing. It brings me back to one of the many silly haters who said on one of your blog posts that this guy is the "worst singer in the competition". It's quite the contrary actually. This guy is the best singer in the competition, and it's by a WIDE mile. It's not even fair. This guy is a star, while the others (again, with the exception of Allison), are not.

Deahh, forced falsetto? If you think that was "forced falsetto", you simply have NO clue what you're talking about. Adam's falsetto is extremely natural. You wanna hear forced falsetto, go back and listen to Anoop. That performance had some forced and unnatural sounding falsetto.

10. camashe -
I dont know about that puppy dog eyes thing though cuz David Cook was cute. And he was really really good also. But there's something intriguing about Adam. I'd give Cook a 9 and Adam a 10 and place them in separate categories

11. jjgeo -
ps-I have nothing against black polish or glammed up rockers (I do kinda agree with LP on the MCR thing...I do enjoy Gerard and the Gang). The bronzer has to go, though. Honestly...he's orange...

I have always had a "take it or leave it" attitude toward AI. I rarely get hooked on any reality show. I have been anxiously anticipating Adam's performance tonight. I was an not really a fan of Adam's until last week. What got my attention was his bold approach to country week. Instead of forcing himself to force himself into a "country mold" and just getting through it; he broke the mold and made his country performance his own. I loved him then, I loved him this evening, what can I say..I AM A FAN!

Are you kidding me... JOE ELLIOT? What does Joe Elliot have that is endearing? He was smarmy and preening as anyone else. Did you watch any videos from the 80's?
The only reason Ring of Fire scared me was because I thought it would scare voters. But it did make everyone talk about him.. Do you remember any other performance that night? I don't. P.S. Anoop is a douche!

14. Yahoo! Music User -
Quit pigeonholing him!! Rocker, theater---- HE IS AMAZING and is far better than anyone else!

15. Deahh -
My Joe Elliot comment was meant as use the falsetto when it works for the song, but don't throw it in for no reason...which Adam does for most of his performances. And you may not have found him endearing, but if Adam sells 5% of the albums Def Leppard has, he should be proud.

16. Yahoo! Music User -
I am so glad Adam chose to tone it down tonight, i.e. no screaming. I was waiting for this kind of performance from him, the kind that would showcase his vocals...and he really delivered! I personally don't think he will win since he is much too polarizing an artist, but he is SO interesting to watch. He keeps you guessing every week, and his performances are always memorable!

17. Dawn -
I'm a 41 year old woman, and I happen to love Adam. His vocals always amaze me. Hell, the guy can sing higher than Mariah Carey LOL! I was reallllly impressed with tonight's performance! It shows that he can rock out, or be gentle and "tender" (as the judges put it). He is definately in a league of his own musically. I hate to say, but I dont see him winning, and I will be thrilled when he doesn't, because then he will be able to do his own thing and not follow the AI rules that the winners have to.

Glam? Yep. Rocker? Sure. Kissing other guys? I wouldn't doubt it. But the fact remains he is a true artist that never ceases to deliver a great performance with awesome vocals!

For the record I actually did like David Cook and I championed him for much of last season. And yes, he is a good-looking man. But I've not been too impressed with his recorded output so far, even though I still think he's talented. Adam definitely has more edge. It's hard to imagine him singing a song like "Time Of My Life."

19. Jon -
And that's exactly one of the reasons why I kind of don't want him to win. I cannot imagine Adam singing one of the corny ass songs they have the finale contestants sing. Blah on that!

20. Yahoo! Music User -
I don't see that any of the other contests have the fan base and the backing that Adam has and I truly believe he will win. I personally loved the version of Ring of Fire and I loved the unplugged, soft version of Tracks of My Tears tonight.

What a thrill that must have been for him to see Smokey Robinson give him a standing ovation.

Did anyone else notice Adam's resemblance to a young Alec Baldwin? He looked so gorgeous tonight.

Lambert says he got carried away, but not sorry
