Idol Results: Adam's Under Fire, Alexis Falls From Grace
Before I go into details of this week's American Idol results show, I just want to officially and emphatically state that I'm thrilled and relieved that Adam Lambert wasn't in the bottom this week, after delivering what just might be THE most polarizing and controversial performance in AmIdol history: his Egyptian goth-metal version of Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire." Judging from message board activity this week, there were a lot of people in America who hated Adam's Cash cover, but fortunately many voters loved it as well. That makes sense, since the best way to describe Adam's performance is it was a "love it or hate it" sort of affair.
I, of course, loooooovvvvved it.
I do just want to make one very important point here: Regardless of whether or not Adam's "Ring Of Fire" had you burning up or just burning mad, it was NOT at all a disgrace to Johnny Cash's legacy, okay? Please note that Johnny was always sort of outside the country establishment. He was a real rebel, the Man In Black, the country singer who dared to record a live album at a prison, a guy who in his later years not only covered songs by alternative artists like Beck, Soundgarden, and most famously Nine Inch Nails, but also took out a full-page ad in trade magazines with a photo of him flipping the bird to the country music business that he felt had abandoned him.
Johnny was a man who, regardless of whether or not he would have particularly liked Adam's cover of his signature song, probably would have appreciated Adam's guts and originality, and the fact that in a way Adam "flipped the bird" to Idol this week by sticking to his guns and never backing down.
So yes, I am relieved that Adam is still in the race--although the extreme reaction he generated Tuesday night has me worried that he might have trouble winning this competition in the long run.
As for the person who most definitinely won't be winning this competition in the short run...well, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Every season of American Idol has its "shocker" elimination. But usually the shocker doesn't come this early, before the top 10 are even announced. The fact that Alexis Grace--a seeming frontrunner who until now I assumed would at least make the top five, even after Tuesday night's disappointing, not-down-'n'-dirty-enough "Jolene" performance--got cut in 11th place has really thrown me for a loop.
I'm also loop-thrown about my girl Allison Iraheta, who inexplicably joined Alexis and Michael Sarver in the bottom three this week. Allison was great on Country Night! Why didn't America vote for her???
Did her little Randy Travis-offending hoedown jig during her mentor session alienate country-purist voters or something? That can't be it, if even Adam's performance wasn't alienating enough to country purists to land him in the bottom. So I'm baffled.
I'm also a little baffled my Michael's near-brush with elimination this week. While I am still no fan of Michael's, I did think that Grand Ole Opry Night showcased him at his best and that his feelgood, high-energy Garth performance would appeal to the country crowd. He also sang first, in one of the "pimp spots," which I believed would further help his chances.
Anyway, I'm sad and not a little confused about Alexis's exit, Allison's failure to connect with voters, and Adam's out-of-control "controversial" status. At this rate, I think Simon and his cronies are going to have to use that Judges' Save option a whole lot sooner than they'd assumed.

Boo hoo!
i was glad to see michael in the bottom and wished he had gone home.. i can't stand him..
and about the judges save.. hello LP, they are not going to use it this early in the season.. like duh.. ryan tried to make it all suspensful and the judges acted like they were having this huge discussion, but really..i like alexis, but she's a victim of "we don't want to use it too early".. what if they saved her and then next week adam or kris was the bottom?
i loved brad paisley's new song! it was so sweet.. his wife is so cute.. and carrie was awesome as usual.. it's too bad i started watching the show the season after she won.. i suppose i could probably find all her performances online
I noted by Idol Dial he was middle of the road in votes, which bodes well for him not winning. Then again, with Alexis gone there aren't many people left I really care that much about. Allison is good, Megan is unique (but stands no chance of winning I'm afraid, she's as polarizing as Adam with her quirky vocals and inability to find any dance rhythm), Kris and Matt are competent and ok to watch, Scott is boring as hell and has only survived because of sympathy votes, Lil Rounds is pretty good but I'm generally not a huge R&B fan, Sarver is blah, blah, blah, and Anoop constantly reminds me of Kumar from the films and I just can't see Kumar becoming an American idol. Sorry Kumar!!!!
Guess I'll be rooting for Megan, Allison, Lil, Matt and Kris in that order. Megan will be gone soon, so hopefully the other four can provide me with some entertainment.
Alexis...she had real talent. I'm sad to see her go. :-(
YAY ADAM! I loved Ring of Fire, man. I don't care what anyone says. It rocked.
SCOTT NEEDS TO GO!!! And so does that Megan chick, as a matter of fact.
I thought Alexis had GREAT pipes, she was certainly a better singer than others, but she wasn't going to win I don't think. The judges are waiting for someone getting booted like Adam or someone at that level who they see in the top 5 before they use that save. Sorry Alexis didn't go farther though.
I think the top 5 will be Anoop, Allison, Lil, Danny and Adam, but just my opinion :)
I am hating the fact that only 3 girls are still in it and 7 guys. Some tour that will be. People will surely line up to see the blind guy, the Christian guy, and Adam all decked out in black and tight leather pants perform right along side each other. The rest of the guys have no description because they are just boring except Matt.. I do like Matt (still a bit boring though I have to say.) When you stop and think about it individually there are some pretty good people, but as a group they suck. I had to skip the group performance last night.
I am so over Lil. She should have been in the bottom three. I think Alexis was still developing and could have been great in the end. Lil and Megan will just be the same through the whole darn thing. It just really sucks.
So this week on "American Idol" Adam Lambert turned a popular Johnny Cash song into a faux Middle Eastern new wave snake-charming chantey, and then the Internet exploded. With hatred for Adam Lambert. Which then caused me to explode with hatred for the Internet, because Adam Lambert is the best thing that's ever happened to "American Idol", and I'll tell you why.
He's not boring. Anoop, for arbitrary example, is an interesting guy on a personal level because he's really smart and it's always fascinating to see a really smart person on a reality show, but he's a dull, wedding band-level singer. A lot of the other contestants are likable and have "a story," which is relevant on this show for reasons surpassing logic, but I don't care about them because they are boring. Allison Iraheta is the only exception I can think of, because she seems crazy in a good way, and she can actually sing, but she's not half the entertainer Adam is. Can you imagine going to an Adam Lambert concert? With production, costumes and a set list that Adam Lambert has complete creative control over? Even Madonna would be like, "Damn! It's only a concert! Tone it down!"
He's a risk taker. When other "Idol" contestants defend their performances by saying "I took a risk," they usually mean "I sang a boring and/or too hard for me song." Or in Megan's unique "Rockin' Robin" case, a stupid and mind-blowingly irrelevant song. When Adam Lambert defends his risks, he's defending turning "Ring of Fire" into an over-the-top belly dancing routine, and doing it well. You can't tell me the man doesn't have a vision.
He's the best singer there. The guy's range is incredible, and he sings circles around all the other contestants every week. I hear a lot of complaints about him being too musical theater, and I don't think that's inaccurate, I just don't think that's inherently a criticism. What does that even mean? He's a classically trained super-ham with great stage presence? It's not like he's going out there all the guy from the "Bring It On" auditions who sings "Give My Regards to Broadway"; he sings pop songs in a pop way. It's just that his voice is so perfect technically that he sounds like you paid 85 bucks to sit and listen to him sing.
He's unique without being terrible.
Which is more than I can say for Megan, who they keep calling unique because she dances weird. To borrow the old "Top Chef" fan pastime, it's called "American Idol", not "America Can't Dance". On a side note, word around the online campfire is that Adam's safe this week, which is great, but also that Danny Gokey has probably received the most votes. I actually don't think he's that terrible, but why, why, why is he so insurmountably popular? Why? I don't think it's the dead wife thing anymore, I really don't. But I also don't understand what else it could be, because he's not that great of a singer. Has America lost its mind?
