Taylor Remade: Hicks Returns

Posted Thu Feb 19, 2009 12:12pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

It's not fashionable to say so, but I've always had a soft spot for Taylor Hicks.

He won me over with his risky but endearing Ray Lamontagne cover on American Idol season 5, and I was thrilled when he shockingly sneaked up from behind to beat out snooty Katharine McPhee by a landslide later that year.

I interviewed Taylor once, and...not to brag, but he told me it was one of the best interviews he'd ever done.

He played a Yahoo! charity event once and sang the Yahoo! yodel, like, seriously eight or nine times without ever being prompted.

I even read the guy's autobiography, Heart Full Of Soul. (It was kind of boring--the most scandalous segment was when he admitted to um, inhaling on one occasion--but I finished the entire thing, almost like it was a homework assignment, out of some sense of duty.)

So I was little bummed when Taylor's career didn't take off in exactly a Clarkson/Underwood-esque manner. I suppose it shouldn't surprise me that he was the first Idol winner to not go platinum and get unceremoniously dropped by BMG after only one album release...like I said in my opening paragraph here, it's not "fashionable" to like Taylor Hicks. It never really was.

But I'm still rooting for him. He's the ultimate underdog, so I can't help it. I'm still a semi-closeted member of the Soul Patrol.

Therefore, I am happy to report that--hot on the heels of his role in the musical Grease--the silver fox is back: He's self-releasing a new studio album, The Distance, on March 10 via his own Modern Whomp Records label. The album's first single is "What's Right Is Right"...and, well, it sounds pretty much like typical Taylor Hicks. "What's Right Is Right" just is what it is:

Finally, Taylor has a music video. Please note that execs at his former label BMG never commissioned a video for him--even though he was the WINNER of the most-watched season in American Idol history!

Anyway, I'm not sure if the tune's throwback easy-listening soul sound will win over many new fans, but I applaud Taylor for simply doing what he does. And I'm sure his less fairweather followers will dig it.

Love the soulfulness of his voice...I can hardly wait for the new CD to come out...I loved him from the first time I seen him on Idol...

5. Fill in the Blank -
Taylor's the only genuine American Idol. The other "Idols" can stick it. Keep on keepin' on, Taylor.

Taylor Hicks is the reason I started watching American Idol in the first place. Not properly marketing Taylor was a HUGE mistake. He is the one and only Idol who...

1)Never sang out of pitch
2)Never dropped a note
3)Could sing anything
4)Was always consistent
5)Entertained along with his singing
7)Was never winded after singing
6)Had personality & charisma along with his natural born talent
7)And NEVER forgot the lyrics

American Idol dropped the ball as far as Taylor is concerned!

Sorta like Michael McDonald for the 21st Century. But hey, I'm not knocking it - speaking of dork, I always LOVED Michael McDonald and he's mucho talented: writing, arranging, producing, performing, backing-up - you name it in the music industry, he's done it. Go, Taylor! I always loved you!

this reminds me of why i liked taylor hicks in the first place. his first post-idol cd, fussed over by clive davis et al, was to me way over-produced and poppy. this song and video are what i was kinda hoping for from taylor hicks. i love a lot of music out there right now but there is room for this old-school soul, like curtis mayfield or sam cooke sound. the arrangement on this song is so sparse and warm and you can hear every note and the spaces in between. and his sweet raspy voice is just perfect for this sound. anyway, i really like both the song and video and i am pretty hard to please!

Blue-eyed Soul fits Taylor like a glove. Although, the song is on my MP3 player, it pops up in my head a lot. Kudos to Jake Davis for a classy video take on it. I'm excited to hear the rest of "The Distance" on March 10th!

Love the song and the video! The song is simple and heart-felt, not like all the pop garbage on every radio station out there. Here's hoping that those of us who like Taylor's brand of music can bring him the recognition he so deserves.

12. Julie -
If you haven't seen the video yet find the time to give it a spin. I predict you will join the chorus of voices humming along and watching intently. A fantastic job and a beautiful song.

14. Louise -
A beautiful song, delivered beautifully by Taylor AND a great, romantic video. Taylor sounds amazing and Jake Davis did a beautiful job capturing the heart and soul of this song and Taylor's talent!

Thanks for your blog, Lyndsey. I appreciate your "coming out of the closet", so to speak... I love this song and the fact that he did this album on his own terms! Taylor has said this career is a marathon for him and not a sprint, so it's all good... And he did an excellent job with the video of the song. It's definitely a classic! Thanks again. (Actually, Taylor's first album was certified platinum. :-)

Great love song !! The video is great too!!

Slight correction, Lindsey - Taylor's TH cd was certified platinum about two months after release. Also has Early Works - pre AI album.
Just a slight update.

Love the video and Taylor's voice! Can't wait for the album "The Distance" due out March 10. So glad Taylor is doing this HIS way - his own boss - his own record company.

19. Mavis -
Love this music and the mystic of the video. It is sexy and haunting at the same time. I can't get enough of Taylor Hicks and his expanded direction. It's beautiful!

20. Harriett -
Good for you Taylor...show them what "class" looks and sounds like!!! Waiting for the CD!!
