Paula Abdul Talks Straight-Up About Her Stalker

Posted Wed Dec 10, 2008 1:09pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

A few weeks ago, when season 5 American Idol reject Paula Goodspeed was found dead of a possible drug overdose/suicide near the home of her own idol, judge Paula Abdul, I questioned whether or not AmIdol producers tend to exploit the mentally ill for the purposes of "entertainment." (Read my original blog here).

Well, after listening to Abdul's shocking recent interview with Barbara Walters, I'm beginning to think the answer to that question is YES. In this tragic case, it seems the show's powers-that-be not only exploited Paula Goodspeed, but that they exploited the not-exactly-100-percent-mentally-stable Paula Abdul as well.

This week during an interview on The View--and later in more depth on Sirius XM Radio--Abdul told Barbara Walters that the Idol powers-that-be allegedly allowed Goodspeed to audition for the show, even though they knew she'd stalked Abdul for years.

Why would they put their star center judge in possible danger like this? Because, according to Abdul, "This was something that would make good television."

Abdul told Walters that Goodspeed had written her "disturbing letters" for nearly 18 years, and that she'd even taken out a restraining order against Goodpseed in the past--but Goodspeed was nevertheless brought on the show "for entertainment value."

"I said, 'This girl is a stalker of mine and please do not let her in,'" Abdul claimed. "[But] it's fun for [the producers] to cause me stress."

Abdul also claimed Fox made her home address public...which might explain how and why Goodspeed was in Abdul's neighborhood at the time of her death.

Wow. Is it any wonder Paula does wacky stuff (like critique Jason Castro songs that were never performed, or appear drunk during live TV interviews, or clap like a seal) when she has to work under such stressful conditions?

Is it just me, or does anyone else wonder HOW this person was able to stalk Paula Abdul for 18 YEARS and somehow, she never found herself Court Ordered to a Psych Ward??? What is unnecessary, is that just because someone reaches fame, the general public seems to think it is Open Season on them. Bull [profane]! People who are stalkers, are beyond mentally ill. Someone who is mentally ill does NOT behave like a stalker...they are afflicted with Bi-polar, Manic Depressive, Schizophrenic (spllng?) ADD, ADHD, Mental Retardation, etc, type disorders...NOT stalking. Stalking is a Criminal disorder, not a mental disorder. You can't possibly believe that Goodspeed didn't know that what she was doing was against the law.

What seems strange is that this stalker never got thrown in jail. How come she was able to devote 18 years to stalking Paula Abdul but never got put in jail? Maybe if she had, she wouldn't be dead right now. But, just as it was her choice to stalk, it was her own choice to take her own life. At least now Paula Abdul can rest a little easier knowing that this threat has been removed.

somehow, it doesn't surprise that AI producers would do that to her.. i was shocked listening to that interview.. no wonder she acts "cray" on the show..

and im sure she did try to have paula goodspeed put in jail, but i'm sure she had a great defense attorney who kept her out..

paula, you go girl! Is it january yet? :-)

this is just tragic, that woman needed help. and paula shouldn't of had to go through all that.

Ok something doesn't add up. Isn't there an age limit to audition. Something like 30. Now if this girl stalked Paula for 18 years, and she was the maximum age of 30...then she started stalking Paula at 12 years old. That is totally ridiculous.

8. Diane -
I agree with you CAT. Something or someone is not truthful, at all. It might have felt like 18 years, but it was probably more like 8. Why would anyone want to stalk someone. They put there clothes on and go to the bathroom just like anyone else. Crazy.

January is National Stalking Awareness Month. See www.stalkingawarenessmonth.org. From some of the comments I have read about the Paula/Idol controversy, it is very clear that we need to devote a great deal of attention to stalking awareness. 78% of stalking victims are women and 87% of stalkers are men. 8% of all women in this country are stalked. 54% of female murder victims reported their stalkers to the police before they were killed by their stalkers. Not only are the women stalked harmed physically, mentally, emotionally and often, financially -- even having to leave their jobs or being fired -- but their children and everyone else around them suffer. Men are affected because these women are their wives, girfriends, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, granddaughters, cousins, friends, etc.
It's undisputed that Paula Goodspeed did stalk Paula Abdul. There is no allegation that Paula Abdul did anything to harm Paula Goodspeed, so why are so many people attacking the stalking victim? What if this stalker had done as she threatened to do and killed Paula Abdul to make her her “guardian angel?” The big question that people should ask is whether the producers of Idol knew it when they let her on the show. Paula Abdul alleges that they let a known stalker of one of their employees into her workplace. It is crucial that people understand the seriousness of workplace stalking. Most stalking situations begin as domestic violence issues and may spill over into the workplace (see, e.g. Gantt v. Security, USA at www.dvmartinlaw.com/GanttvSecurityUSA) and others involve stalkers who are delusional strangers. Any woman may be stalked by an obsessed workplace stranger, while doing nothing more than “working while female;” yet, there is no federal statute that specifically prohibits employers from retaliating against stalking victims or require an employer to keep a stalker out of the workplace. (Of course, men are stalked too, but to a much smaller degree and with much less chance of violence toward them.) Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, including sexual harassment. I am currently before the United States Supreme Court, asking the Court to address workplace stalking under Title VII. See www.dvmartinlaw.com/Martin and See recent http://alexisamoore.blogspot.com/2008/11/111408-us-supreme-court-will-decide.html.
If the Court doesn't apply Title VII, we need a new federal statute that specifically prevents employer retaliation against stalking victims (such as firing them) and obligates employers to take reasonable steps to keep known stalkers out of the workplace.

Paula was so troubled that the producers did this in season 5, that she's went ahead and continued to tape 3 more seasons... The girl was found dead about a month ago, but somehow this is becoming a story again a few weeks before the new season starts. Weird.

18 years? How old is Ms Goodspeed? Was she stalking Paula Abdul since the age of 5?????

C'mon people, the math is off here, something is up!

What seems to be missing in these comments are an understanding that being a stalker is not against the any laws that are enforceable! Temporary restraining order against someone are like waving a red flag at a bull. Just ask any woman trying to keep an abusive ex out of her new life. TRO's require the victim enforce it or call the police everytime the person shows up and if you don't have any proof, the police cannot help you. I know because I've had to help a friend capture a pic of her ex voilating the TRO before anything could be done. Our technology has far outpaced laws that should protect victims. Another case in point is the recent cyber-bullying case where the young girl committed suicide. The prepertrator was convicted of FRAUD...not bodily harm or murder of any degree. We have to catch up with laws to protect our civil liberities in this current cyber-world. And if the producers did knowingly let that woman onto the show...there might be recourse on the part of Goodspeed's family. Only time will tell which side is telling the truth.

get a real life people, is this all you dopes have to do with your life, duh

Wow that's so crazy. I don't think your suppose to have a stalker for that long cause that's when things gets out of hand. Now I don't know about you guys but I would have more than one body guard in this kind of case. So in some kind of way Paula lead it on.

Gayle, you are so right! Paula Goodspeed was clearly a danger to herself and others -- primarily, to Paula Abdul. She eventually decided to take her own life, rather than Paula Abdul's, but stalkers kill their victims regularly. As I mentioned above, 54% of female murder victims reported being stalked before they were KILLED! In addition to the legal issues I discussed above, we need to provide law enforcement with some real alternatives. Courts can issue restraining orders, but people with mental problems are rarely deterred by them. Stalkers need to be confined and provided with mental help, for their own sakes and the sakes of the people they might kill or otherwise injure. Right now, police will tell you that all they can do is take the stalkers to the local mental hospital for observation, but we can expect them to be released within a day or so and then they are likely to be angry with the person whom they perceive put them there --usually the stalking victim -- which makes the angry stalker more dangerous. I hope that we can use this dialogue for an opportunity to address the problem and save lives in the future.
