America's Got Logic: Kaitlyn Maher Wisely Sent Home

Posted Fri Sep 19, 2008 12:01pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

This week, 4-year-old America's Got Talent contestant Kaitlyn Maher performed the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There." That's a tough, octave-spanning song for even an adult to tackle (Mariah Carey is one of the few capable of doing that), and really probably the only CHILD who could do it justice is little Michael Jackson (who was 11, not a toddler, when he recorded the original).

As usual, Kaitlyn was a button-nosed cutie, but she was clearly waaaay out of her depth:

Meanwhile, the big man with the big voice, Neal E. Boyd, took on one of the most showoffy, going-for-gold ballads in the TV-talent-show songbook, Eric Carmen's "All By Myself." And he sang it opera-style. And he was NOT out of HIS depth:

So last night, when the five AGT finalists were announced, the contestants were summoned to the stage in faceoff pairs...and it came down to a showdown between Kaitlyn and Neal.

And I sat there, remote control in my white-knuckled hand, muttering to myself and/or no one in particular: "Gawd help me, if that toddler takes away a rightful spot in the finals from an opera singer, I will change the channel right now and I will never watch this show again."

Well, luckily that didn't happen. I heaved a sigh of relief and set remote down, happy that America listened to tough-loving judge Piers Morgan this time (instead of booing him) when he warned it would not be fair to put someone as young as Kaitlyn on a Vegas stage.

Fast-forward about halfway through the clip below and you can see Kaitlyn's elimination:

I must say, Kaitlyn handled her defeat rather maturely (if robotically) for a wee 4-year-old. But when Jerry Springer told her, "We'll see you next year," I have to say--next year is still too soon. Give the girl a break and let her grow up a bit, and then maybe we'll see her in TEN years.

NO she didnt deserve to go home I heard you already picked who is winning the show so its rigged

That girl's pitch has been waaay off for the last two songs. She really shouldn't be given a handicap just because she's 4 year old. There were so many more qualified people that should have gone before her.

She is a cutie but be realistic, no 4 year old could do Vegas. Put her on the Mickey Mouse Club and let her be a kid. There are plenty of years for her to grow up and then she can go for it.

well we will see her on tv again as she is going to disney which is good for her, she is a very smart 4 year , to bad you cant sing the way she does , or remeber the words to ever song , and i say good for kaitlyn she did her best and people like you are what is wrong with the world , and that is why kids act the way they do , because they are put down by people like you

s_sines, you are sick. You rather exploit a 4 year old? And NO it is not rigged, you have no proof of that, you are just making a babbling fool out of yourself by expressing that pathetic anger just because an exploited 4 year old didnt make it into the top 5. Boo Hoo, go cry in the corner.

Wanna see a little kid with REAL talent? Someone who has a memory as good as Kaitlyn's but can actually SING?

Yea....she was the runner up for Britian's Got Talent. Had Kaitlyn had that kind of talent, I would have had no problem voting for her.

Come on! I don't give d.a.m.n! Now the little stupid girl can go home and be a kid! She doesn't need that stupid program. America's "C.r.a.p.p.y's" Talent is the most stupid show on TV. I haven't seen it, and don't need to. I just like to speak about it and find out about all the dumb people who enjoys this insane shows, so I can spank them online

she deserved to go 3 episodes ago.....who is going to go to vegas to see a 4 year old with no expression sing..................

Why in the world is there no age limit? It should be at least 10 if you have family members along for the ride like the Jackson Five. Would I pay Vegas prices to hear a little child sing? Not really. I am sure they finally figured that out in the bullpen.

I agree. Let the child be a CHILD. There is something very disturbing about a 4 year old headlining in Vegas. I think this kid will go places-she HAS talent. But she is simply too young at this point to have a singing career.

I think a four year old should be a CHILD and not be put into the spotlight. I agree, wait until she's older, preferably past the age of 14, then let's see her blossom. Children deserve to have fun while singing or acting, not have their parents push them into something so they can rake in money on a little girl's talent.

Who would want their four year old performing in Vegas, anyway?

I think what is wrong with America is putting children into the spotlight before they can understand what is wrong with them. A good example of a child star with a stunted maturity and growth is Michael Jackson. I would hate for this wonderful little girl turn into the next tabloid story in 15 years because she acts like a spoiled child due to never getting the chance to actually be a child.

Her parents can nurture her talent accordingly until she is older, then let her make the decision to be a singer. At four, I would rather play with dolls than be famous and make money for my parents.

I thought she was quite good for a 4 year old. Its not only a million dollars but also a contract for Vegas. She is still to young, she should just be a little girl and maybe when she is older she can try singing again.

13. SMK -
Sure, she's cute. But she can't sing. And the contest is about having talent, not being cute. Every four year old is cute. I think it's a shame her parents are pushing her to have a singing career. Maybe in another 15 years, maybe after lots of vocal training. Just let her be a kid, for goodness sake!

she is a little girl, she need to be in bed early,we are children for such a short time, let her enjoy her childhood,i will not pay money to see her in vegas or buy her cd's,is over so there

well I thought America got it right.. all 5 of the finalist belong there.. I would have turned the tv off too and never watched the show again if she went thru.. it would have been so unjust for the others -

16. chris -
Look all you illiterate people, stop calling her "to young"...she's "too young." Please learn basic spelling and grammer. Also, that little girl is not "smart," SHE'S 4 YEARS OLD FOR CHRIST'S SAKE! You don't think her parents are telling her what to say and how to behave? I bet she poops her pants during every show...because she's 4! I still can't believe they let her take the place of more deserving/harder working adults in the early rounds of the competition.

I think she is pretty good. You people are rude to a 4 year old like that. You should let her down easy. She tried her best and thats all. People dont have to jude others by their age, or their vocie. Singing should be about having fun

18. __A_YAHOO_USER__ -
I agree that if she is going on "America's got talent" that she should be judged as any of the other contestants are. giving her the excuse that she is only four years old will ovuiously get her far in the show but would it be fair? i think not

19. Neville T -
I think she deserved to go home. I mean the winner of this show gets a show in LAS VEGAS. she is just 4. what about school and all. I wouldnt pay to watch a little girl sings some kid songs. i can just watch my own kids sing.

20. Yahoo! Music User -
I saw only the one song so I can't say much as to whether she can or can't sing; reason being she didn't sing that song. She knew the words and she recited them. I hear she was good earlier in the show but I guess if the winner gets a gig in Vegas that first guy said the right thing about as to why she shouldn't be moving on. That's a lot of pressure for a four year old, hell it's too much pressure for 22 year olds. (How old is Britney?)
