Canadian Idol: Age, more than a number

Posted Wed Jul 23, 2008 5:51am PDT by Jordan Gracey in Reality Bites

Each Idol result shows kick off with a group performance and a recap of the performances from the night before.  The clips used in tonight’s recap displayed how truly uninformative the Idol judges are this season.

While watching last night’s show I felt that the judges were less than actively participating.  After watching the re-cap I felt fairly certain that not one of the judges offered constructive criticism to the hopefuls after their performances!  I know we’re Canadian and all, and with that there is the characteristic of “nice” that seems inherent, but call a spade a spade and offer these young bucks some tricks of the trade!  Isn’t that what the judges are there for?

Before we could find out whose performance earned them a ticket home, we were reminded that just because you don’t win Idol doesn’t mean that you can’t still realize your dreams.  Taking to the Idol stage tonight as a guest performer was Canadian country cutie Jaydee Bixby.  You may be wondering why his name seems familiar, that’s because this fresh-faced country boy was the runner up to current Idol Brian Melo.  Hailing from Alberta, Jaydee has put his farm-boy roots to work and recorded his first album titled, “Cowboys and Cadillacs”, which is conveniently out now!  So, if you were disappointed that Jaydee didn’t earn the Idol title this year, show him some love by getting yourself a copy!

Without any further adieu…

The bottom three were Amberly, Sebastian and Katherine.

The judges sounded off;

Zack in his double-edged sword manner commented on the fact that the bottom three share a lack of potential.  Well Zack, didn’t you pick these hopefuls based on the fact that you saw potential in them in the first place?

Jake offered up the pearls of wisdom, “don’t think, do”.  Wow!

Farley reiterated that Sebastian is more charismatic than vocally inclined and that Katherine’s age is holding her back.

Sass totally copped out and said they just didn’t have their best nights last night.

When all was said and done, pseudo rock chick Katherine was sent home.

Canadian Idol aired when Katherine was 10 years old.  At 16, her dreams to perform on the Idol stage came true.  She may have been voted off, but to make it as far as she did in the competition at such a tender age is truly a remarkable achievement.  In a few years Katherine will hopefully have the experience and chops to achieve her dreams of becoming an artist because frankly she’s just not ready yet.

Remaining in the running to be the next Canadian Idol are;

Theo, Earle, Mark, Drew, Mitch, Amberly, Sebastian and Mookie

Stay tuned next week for when the hopefuls share a stage with Gavin Rossdale!  I know I’ll be watching

This obviously is not a talent competition. If it were then Sebastien would have gotten the boot and not Katherine. He seemed genuinely shocked that he was safe for another week. Even to my untrained ear he cannot sing. All he has going for him is his appeal to the yound girls. She, however, got good commments week after week.
(The producers of Can.Idol really should do something about replacing Zack...he is an embarrassement to the show and to Canadian viewers. Imagine what American viewers think of this clown!!)

I agree 100% - Sebastien should have been gone a whole ago. TO send this young lady home over someone that can barely carry a note?

We are quite disappointed with the lack of real talent this year, Our favorites are Theo and Amberly. Mookie and Sebastiian can certainly leave.

I totally disagree with the Mookie comment, I think he has total star power...final two should be Mookie and Earl, enough with cookie cutter winners, time for talent!

"enough with cookie cutter winners, time for talent" sigh, this attitude is exactly why this show (and the US version} fail completly in their mission to bring new talent to the fore. It is simply a popularity contest driven by young girls voting for their hearthrob. The vast majority of voters couldnt't recognize real talent if their life depended on it. Long live Triple Sensation!!!

That fact is that Katherine is from Quebec, where the English population and amount of viewers who watch Canadian Idol are minimal compared to the rest of Canada.. Therefore fan base is not what it could be compared to other cities.. Which is to bad because 16 or not she had one of the best voices there,,,

can't believe the outcome. IMO it should have been a toss up between Sebastien and Mitch who missed the mark on a Jeff Healy classic.

8. Scaramouche -
Jspot..what nonsence! so she's from Quebec where the majority's native language is French ( many of whom are bilingual) does that stop the rest of Canada voting for her?? or maybe the rest of the country is bigoted, which I doubt, the hearthrob will win over talent every time...

I agree with other coments about the talent this year, it isnt as good D. Coulter

10. Jspot -
Well observer2 i wish you where right but, I must say that if she was from Toronto she would have made it to the Final five....don't you think that alot of votes come form you r home town or province talented or not?
All i am saying is that even though Quebec is bilingual the amount of people watching the show is much less than the rest of Canada.. The French population will wait and watch there Star Academy which is a French Canadian Idol only in Quebec.

I agree that Zack is a disgrace. Not sure if anyone else has noticed this but every single week he makes a pass at Theo instead of offering anything remotely constructive and useful. In addition to acting completely unprofessional by coming on to one of the contestants his personal musical tastes are obviously very limited and he can't see past them to offer anything of use to the performers who don't play what he likes. He needs to go.

This is where I disagree with Canada....Katherine was one of the best if not one of the two remaining contestants on the show. My hat goes off to Katherine...keep up with the good work, and go out there and prove Canada wrong....Yvie

What is wrong with all of you....do you not remember Eva Avilla, she is from Quebec and won the Idol title, it doesn't have anything to do with where you are from. Think about what you are writing...The judges don't know what they are talking about, I am not sure how they made it in this business. A quick note: The version of light my fire by Earl was a disgrace to Jim Morrison; what are they thinking!! Great guy but he is like a little kid who doesn't know what to do on stage.

As far as I am concerned some of the best "Talent" is gone already. There is no doubt this is a popularity contest. If the winners were picked by the judges there is no doubt the outcome would be entirely different not only this season but all seasons . Sebastien should have been gone right from audition time he wouldn't carry a note in a bucket, and as far as i was concerned his brother was much better. Out of whats left my vote for singing ability goes to Earl first then Theo . Zack is no doubt a Simon Cowell want a be but its not going to happen. Whatever one might think of Simon he has class which Zack could never have.

Last night's results were quite disappointing to say the least, ugh it's always the 8th place/7th place finisher that always for some reason is a huge upset. Oh well I guess, you just have to move on, cross your fingers after you have made your voting contribution and hope Canada makes the right decision next week.

Canadian idol needs a break from the judge and to the contestant, needs to ripen up and prepared as they grow.Canada, dont push it if you ran out of talent, my 8 year dont daughter says there is nothing special, they are all the same, covering they voices with their guitar and good looks...

My vote is for Earl.He is truly unique and talented.I didn't even watch much last year because Canada voted some of the most talented people off in the beginning and it was BORING.I believe there's lots of talent this year.Let's hope Canada gets it right this time.Sebastian should have gone, not Catherine.

18. Yahoo! Music User -
Rick honey you got it nailed down talent hah few and far between . Right from the audition time Earl was my favorite and if there is any justice he will win. Its got to be a popularity contest or alot of canadians are tone deaf

Personally, I am not much fond of watching Can.Idol! With Katherine gone, most of the so-called "talent" has left. Anyways, I was highly impressed by Katherine's performances. She has a wonderful voice and if anyone should be given the privelage to remain on the show a little while longer, it should be her. Secondly, Zack is trying to be the "cooler" out of the four judges, which he is most certainly not. Okay, some people watching the show might find his humour humourous but I do not. I think he is copying Simon Cowell from American Idol; being somewhat harsh towards the contestants but in a way that is considered amusing, atleast to him. *sigh*
Ok, end of rant. =/

20. Ramna -
Ok, honeydew9999, you are absolutely right. That's all I had to say.
