Canada Can Dance!
Who knew that dance shows would be one of the biggest Reality TV fads of our generation? Dancing With The Stars, well, that show was set to be a hands down hit because sadly, we love watching celebrities in awkward situations. But So You Think You Can Dane…Canada? I for one was pretty sure that So You Think You Can Dance Canada was going to be a flop. Sorry, but look at the track record, whenever a reality show is taken from its roots, whatever made it work gets lost in translation. But not this time! I am also not the only person that has been forced to put their point shoe in their mouth, the show’s a hit and even SYTYCD high profiled alum’s and affiliated dancers are taking notice!
The panel has been blessed with high profile judges, most recently Rex Harrington (former Principal Dancer with the National Ballet of Canada) and Mary “The Scream Queen” Murphy who have both attested to the fact that there is some serious Canadian talent on this show!
Like all true competitions, some contestants are really killing it, some are giving it their all but falling short and others are maintaining.
For me the couple that really own this competition are Arassay and Nico. From day one these two have had intense chemistry and that matched with impressive dance skill are making them a serious force to be reckoned with. They were assigned a Hip-Hop routine last night, which is what many of the partners hope for, but not this pairing. As we know, Arassay is more artistic than street, but this girl pulled out all the stops despite it being her (I think they said) second time dancing a hip-hop routine. These two killed it; Nico and Arassay beside each other every step of the way performing a routine was high-energy, precise and totally entertaining. The two danced so hard that they couldn’t even talk when host Leah Miller asked how they felt! This Canadian judge gives them a 10/10!
The couple that has been so precise and technically strong since they auditioned for the show are Lisa and Vincent. It is apparent that these two have probably been dancing since they could walk, they haven’t stumbled yet and chances are they won’t. However, I just don’t think they have the chemistry that Arassay and Nico (and a few of the other couples seem to have) that would take the performances to that next level. It’s obvious that this couple will make it straight through to the end, but they will need to find a little more sizzle to really bring it all the way home!
When it comes to sizzle, Natalli has enough for both her and her partner Francis. When these two first performed, her abs were the toast of the panel, a few weeks later, the judges noticed her dancing. This week, there was the fusion of the two; her sizzle and her skill. These two made this love-struck performance work with the right combo of sizzle, sass and even hair pulling.
Kaitlyn and Issak stepped it up this week! Perhaps the building intensity of the competition is forcing them to shed their doe-eyed ways and really dance! They were set to work with Blake for their performance and we all know that Blake doesn’t go easy on anyone. I think that this was a test; that if they couldn’t pull off his choreography, they would fumble and be sent home. However, if they could rise to the challenge it would set a new tone for them. The audience knew that the challenge had been met when Kaitlyn leapt off a stable and Issak caught her, effortlessly. Well, when all was said and done even Tré had a new appreciation for them (especially Issak).
One of the most moving moments/ performances thus far in the season was owned by Allie and Danny. These two danced an emotional performance, choreographed by Paul Becker. The storyline; a mother and her son that she had put up for adoption are re-united. The inspiration; the true story of his mother and brother. Wow! Allie and Danny definitely felt the pressure but made it work and danced it beautifully.
Miles and Lara are another one of the couples that are fighting hard and doing their best to make it work and hold their own against the likes of Arassay and Nico, Lisa and Vincent, etc. They are both good dancers, but they just don’t have the sparks that make the other couples so lovable. I do have to give them credit where credit is due however. The lifts could have broken them, but they worked and worked until they got them right, despite bruises and pains.
Caroline and Jesse…these two…I dunno. From their first performance, they have been the underdog as far as I’m concerned. However something about them is winning audience votes and keeping them from being eliminated. We now know, without much doubt, that the “something” is Caroline. She carried Jesse in their performance and all the judges called it out. Frankly, she’s been carrying him since they got paired up. Just sayin’. Wonder who will be asked to dance for their life? My guess is Caroline and Jesse will be dancing, wonder who else will.
