Did Rock’s Anti-Hero Make Good?

Posted Mon Oct 20, 2008 11:44am PDT by Jordan Gracey in Reality Bites

You may remember a little band that went by the name of Guns N’ Roses.  They were kind of a big deal from ’87(ish) ‘till…well…now.  It’s been over a decade since we’ve heard anything new from them, but their catalogue of hits has never grown tiresome.  Despite the passing years, “Welcome To The Jungle”, “November Rain”, “Paradise City” and many others have remained relevant and bad a$$ rock tracks!

While the band may have technically “died” when one of the key members, Slash, left in 1996, they were never forgotten, or given up on.  Could that have had something to do with the promise of a sixth album?

Formed in the 80’s (1985, it’s dated) in Los Angeles, California, Guns N’ Roses was set to shake things up and become one of the biggest things to happen to Rock Music.

The original band line-up went like this; Axl Rose (vocals), Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar),Tracii Guns, Ole Bench (bass) and Rob Gardner (drums).

In what may have set a trend for GN’R, there was a line-up change early on.  Tracii Guns walked out on the band and Ole Bench was soon to follow.  This move no doubt angered the ever cool, calm and collected Axl, but it was a blessing in disguise as it allowed for the soon to be worldwide phenomenon known as Slash to come onboard.

Shortly after this change, Duff McKagan replaced Ole Bench and Guns N’ Roses as most of us knew/ remember/loved them was formed.

The band went on to record and release five mega albums.

1987: Appetite for Destruction

1988: G N' R Lies

1991: Use Your Illusion I

1991: Use Your Illusion II

1993: "The Spaghetti Incident?"

N-35580&hl=en&fs=1"N-35580&hl=en&fs=1"

They also went on to develop a reputation for being one of the most hard-partying, unreliable (thanks to Axl), and explosive bands to hit the charts.  No one partied harder or lived the Rock ‘N Roll lifestyle like these boys did.  But this lifestyle dies hard, as they soon realized.  We all know what happened next; ego’s clashed, lifestyles changed and the band split, leaving some loose ends.

There were always mumblings of a “GN’R Masterpiece” that Axl held the rights to that would round out the Guns N’ Roses catalogue.  Already named, the skeleton of a sixth album, Chinese Democracy, sat in progress, unfinished in a studio somewhere.  This holy grail of albums caused much controversy.  Being the final nail in the group’s coffin, it is said that this album was what finally broke the band into pieces.  That Axl became a control freak creating major rifts between himself and the rest of the band.  Despite the personal complications, the album was also a record company’s worst nightmare.  Chinese Democracy was known to be an album that had racked up millions of dollars in recording-related debt.  It had suffered numerous false starts, changes in direction, had featured numerous “guest” musicians and suffered leaked samples.  Most of us had given up on this album, or had used it as the butt of many jokes, until recently.

In September 2008, ROCK BAND 2 for the X BOX 360 was released, featuring “Shackler’s Revenge”, a track off the famed Chinese Democracy.  On October 9th, it was officially announced that Chinese Democracy will be released on November 23rd!

On October 16th, the band released confirmed track listings for the album on their website

1. Chinese Democracy
2. Scraped
3. Shackler's Revenge
4. Street Of Dreams (The Blues)
5. If The World
6. Better
7. This I Love
8. There Was A Time
9. Riad N' The Bedovins
10. Sorry
11. I.R.S.
12. Catcher
13. Madagascar
14. Prostitute

Axl Rose has some “new friends”, a new album and a promise of a revived career.

Tour Dates have been posted http://www.newgnr.com/newgnr.html and everything seems legit!  Who would have thought that this album would ever be finished, that it would be released or that we would even care all these years later?

Axl better not let us down!!

The new G N’R looks like this; a warped Axl Rose, Dizzy Reid (keys), Robin Fink (guitar), Ron Thal aka Bumblefoot (guitar), Richard Fortus (rhythm guitarist), Tommy Stinson (bass), Frank Ferrer (drums) Chris Pitman (synth, keyboard).

Just heard the Chinese Democracy 1st time play today on Whitehorses' "RUSH" radio...Sounded a little old shall we say...nothing remarkable...Some nice twists and turns in the arrangement. Overall maybe a 7 out of ten to me...Just for what it's worth....Loren M...Yukon

I'll belive it when I see it. I've always been a huge G N'R fan,but after hearing year after year that this album is comming and still never has,I really don't care anymore! Axl has disapointed fans time and time again,so why wouldn't do it this time. You can olny cry wolf so many times Axl!

I think Axl should quit while he is ahead. Nothing worse than a band that didn't know when to stop.

Van Halen's last album with Singer Gary Cherone was a mistake they could not undo. Radio stations everywhere stopped play classic Halen becuase of the silly move. I highly doubt the new GNR Album will be another Appetite For Destruction!

More likely they will release a couple of really [profane]ty videos where AXL can pretend he is 25 again. That dude is way too vain! People are not like they used to be. They don't give a crap about your past. I you suck right now then you suck. Trust me, they will suck like never before and ruin what could have been a true Rock Legacy!

Can't Wait!!

It isn't G 'N R unless Slash and Duff are on board as well. The album will prove that they were the greatest rock and roll band in the world. I wish they could set aside their differences and tour again. Who knows? Kiss and Van Halen did it, maybe Axl can pull his head out of his ass long enough to realize a reunited GNR tour is a huge moneymaker

i love this band!!!
but i think axl runined the band :'(
i miss slash!!

GNR was the best,is the best, and will always be the best!!!!

Slash and Duff are important but Izzy Stradlin wrote most of the early hits. It can't be GNR without those 3 guys. GnR is a brand, not a band.

One of the most overrated bands ever. They're not even really Guns and Roses anymore. No Slash (and to a lesser extent, no Duff) = not GnR.

Yawn.

To those who think that the first single is a little mediocre.....I could see where you're coming from. But just hold out until you hear the rest. It's absolute genius. Not to mention, this is only the first of 3 or 4 albums to be released. The best is yet to come. They're coming back in a big way.

Those who can't get the idea out of their heads about GnR not being GnR without Slash and Duff?......Remember who started the band. Axl and Izzy. It's Axl's band, the rest of the crew left on their own terms. Axl has the right to do whatever he wants. But it doesn't really matter because they're Chinese Democracy is rolling through like a storm and the haters can't do anything except bite their tongues.

Long Live Axl Rose!!

Give me a break. We all know that the greatest rock and roll band ever is AC/DC. If for one minute someone in this world thinks any different, it just means that your not musically educated like I am. Axl, didn't have a great voice then and still dosn't now. How can you possibly say that Pistols And Tulips are one of the, or thee greatest rock band ever ? Beats the heck out of me. Have you counted the amount of albums AC/DC has put out since Pistols and Tulips broke up ? Its endless. Yes they did come up with a few good sellers, but the writing of the Young Brothers still goes strong today, and has since the mid to late 70's. Good luck to you Axl, the last time I saw you sing was on TV for some awards show, and your ego and your voice still sucked !! Thanx for getting me out of my chair to turn the channell.

It really better be something, They produced really COOL CD's in a very short period of time. So This CD took like 15 years to make?
Im a little worried its going to suck. Axl has been out of the action for a long long time.

it is Awsome and great specially chinese democracy,Hope it will be soon.

I cant imagine the new album will sound up to date being so much time has gone by but It might be good for a few good traxs but the band just aint the same with out the original members.

Shackler's Revenge has been released, so Axl must have SOMETHING done...

I'm not sure how many fans still care. Piece of this album have surfaced over the years (eg. End of Days soundtrack back in '98 and a few live tracks), but it's probably only its infamy that has gained any sort of publicity. Afterall, how great can this album be? It's STILL going to basically be an Axl Rose solo album. There has been false return after false return, cancelled concerts and line-up changes. How can THIS be the 'ultimate' masterpiece?

There is no apostrophe in "egos".
