If She...

Posted Wed Oct 15, 2008 11:51am PDT by Jordan Gracey in Reality Bites

Alright y’all, don’t shoot the messenger!

Let me just say that I like Beyoncé!  I think she’s a great performer, talented actress, savvy business woman and easy on the eyes.  I also respect how she doesn’t use the paparazzi to stay current, rather she relies on her artistry.  She's a total class act!

With that being said….

As you may already know, Beyoncé’s third solo album I Am… is due to drop November 18th.  Last week, her video for the lead track “If I Were A Boy” hit various media channels and was met with rave reviews and pleased fans everywhere.

However, grumblings also began that this song doesn’t belong to Beyoncé.  Before I jumped on the bandwagon I decided to do some digging and discover if this was real or rumour (‘cause we all know that for every fan there are at least a half dozen haters right?).

My findings:

Song credits for If I Were a Boy” are stated as Toby Gad and Beyoncé Knowles on Wikipedia.  (I had to check here as the album isn’t actually out yet).  After this I turned to iTunes…no luck.  The single isn’t up for sale yet, nor is the video.  Darn.  No fear, the Internet is a vast place, I was sure to find something else.   What did I find?  “If I Were A Boy,” recorded by a little 21 year-old who goes by the name of BC Jean

This California native is apparently the next generation star, from a musical family that has been associated with RCA Records.  For those of you not familiar with labels, RCA (or RCA Victor) is one of the flagship labels of Sony.  Beyoncé is signed to Columbia, which is now a premier subsidiary label of Sony.  Hmmmm......

Check it for yourself here

Sorry B!

Jay, please don’t come after me!

What do you guys make of this?

well if any one cares i think they both stole the music behind the words
sounds a lot like "one of us" by joan osbourne

On BC Jean's MySpace page, she states that she's been working with Toby Gad, the guy credited for writing this song "with" Beyonce...

"Stealing from a kid"....u guys are silly..where have u been for the past 6years!!everyone steals everyone's songs.what are u people goin on about..westlife,RONAN KEATING, shayne, every musician steal most country songs. Besides, Beyonce is not like every musical artist..is either she did not know or it is the way the musical industry is....remember its her record label not herself.

So are u all trying to say she stole over 20songs she has been singing and not one ever said it was their song....i feel this shouldn't be news at all. Tell me she jumped from a building, tell me she committed sucide, tell me she's pregnant......not that she stole a music!!!!just like the other day she was on the front page because she was wearing a weave!!!for fuc*-sake, she is a black woman!!!
The media is angry at her for being secretive in her affairs.
I dont love all her music but i like her skills and talent and i RESPECT her, i feel everyone should also do that and we should all know what the media can do to people by now!this news is crap!!!!The media will use this to get back at her!!

Of course Beyonce wouldn't have stolen the song. Jeez... do you think her company is that stupid? Whoever manages this BC Jean sold the rights to Beyonce's record label to re-record the song.

That's how it always goes in the music industry. So blame both parties if you're not happy, BC's for selling out and Beyonce's for looking to scoop up any ol' song.

Interesting that Toby Gad was one of the producers that BC Jean has worked with isn't it?

I listened to both songs and must admit I like the BC Jean version best. If what we are seeing is to be believed then I hope Beyonce is not trying to pass this off as her own. Hard to believe that someone as "large" as she is would do that. And if this IS truth and the song is BC Jean's, big time royalties comin' her way at the very least!

For God's sake she sold the song no biggie people

AS LONG AS THEY'RE GETTING PAID. IT'S ALL GOOD!!!
IT'S BUSINESS

I too like B.C. Jean's version better. I am a big fan of Beyonce, but BC's version has much more feeling to it, and more angst. Beyonce's version sounds like most R&B hits. To me it's same old same old. BC's version is like a breath of fresh air. Makes me think of a cross between Avril (in the early days) and Jewel (at least her other songs make me think of Jewel). I like it!

For god's sake people! This is exactly what the record companies want you custies to do!!! Neither Beyonce nor this BC Jean girl write this song!!! Some beat monkey working for Sony wrote this song as do they for many of the most popular songs you so enjoy! This is a two for one deal the company's getting. Beyonce makes the song famous, some unknown but sellable gets the credit for it, she gets her moment to shine and Sony get double the profits for half the promotion!!!
No big deal, its a catchy song. Go ahead, buy the album(s) and enjoy them, just remember you're part of a perfect scheme.

i also find the Bc one much better.i realy think she can do it she has done it before with her sister who is writing songs for her why take onother persons work knowing very well that it is not hers anyway...

152. Jamie-kins, ... -
my guess is that the song was sold to her or the label (or the label already owned the rights to it, meaning they can offer it to whomever they want) otherwise legally she wouldn't be able to release it. But i like BC's version better.

153. Ayodele -
OmG!! jsu tlevae the girl alone. i thappens all the dam time in the music indusrty if u knew anything about it. SHe wouldnt rip off an aritist if she know it was theire, blaem the record label not her. And no Beyonce didn't ing this song liek BC Jean, that's how beyonce sings, have you not heard "Me Myself And I" or "Listen". Both songs (althought the same) are of different types of music. Beyonce's voice and the background beat/rhuthm gives the song a mroe hip-hop/ R&B feel to it where as BC's version is more of soft rock.
Of course you cna have opinions of which 'vesion' u like better, but based on talent and voice, let the girl have her fame/honour/glory for this, Beyonce's voice is MUCH better. With the choice of versions i like, which is beyonce's (video is beautiful for the song btw) that is jsut because i liek R&B more.
Anyhwo, all u haters on ANY artist, jsut wake up already, no one cna be perfect and have everything that u want, dsnt meant that thye dnt deserve to be an artisit or u should rip on them for it, if u dnt liek it then turn off the song and listne to something else that you do like, i mean dam.
AND back up on the pint that beyonce has only her body for her. Are oyu telling me that when she was a little kid singing and every1 was amazed in talent shows etc, people were starign at her body??? Are you telling me that in Destiny's Child (yes although the girls are beatiful, and yes so is BC) the only thing people stared at were their bodies, if so, then soooooooooo many dam dogs in this world. Tkae the music as it is and forget about the artist, if the artisit is what decides what music u gonna like, then soemthing of popularity and wanting only thos eliek you around u (discrimintaion and prejuduce if u dnt know) is what that is.

154. Colette -
beyonce is the type of person that would do that, she acts nice on tv but check out how she'd shut the girls up with her eys n words duribg destiny childs interviews, u can tell she;s the kind that has her word go all the time. love her as an artist, she was born 4 it but B is B, her word goes

Ya i mean dam think people. If BC Jean is till gonna put the song on he rown album, that means that B isn't claiming ALL rights to the song, they must have worked out a deal. IF beyonce was claiming all rights tot eh song then BC wldnt have the "right" (yea see how that word is in both statements) to put out the song on her album.

Yea i knwo wat you're thinking, pathetic that i would spend 5-10 minutes typing this. I"m jsut sick and tired of people always fricken ripping on Beyonce for any little thing she does jsut cuz she's a music sensation and people are jealous. Something liek imitating Jay Z in her "Upgrade U" video turns into why would she dress like a man, she dsnt even look good as it, wow B get ur own look. I mean a joke is a joke, dnt u know when u take the backgroudn of anotehr music artist and play your own song u should get sued, even if u dnt think so. It's their song, anything u modify to just make your own song needs permission from the artist, yet people do it all the time cuz it's a simple matter. Like P.diddy and faith evans dedication song to Biggy was origionally form the Police, no one ripped on Diddy for that (mayeb cuz they got all the fatcs first) but as soon as it's beyonce, all hell brakes loose. JUST admit u a little jealous, just admit she has the talent and the voice nad get over it.

*NO one said anything when Jennifer Hudson sang all of B's songs over again in Various performances, yet B's label (not her specifically) does it (obviously wiht some rights) and 80% of the people are jumping down B's throat because of it.

Let's get this straight, based on talent, emotion, soul (like any1 knows what that is anymore anyways, jsut throwing words around to make B sound bad) beyonce wins over anyone out in Music now, the only other contender is Mariah Carey. SO BC JEAN IS NOT A BETTER SINGER THAN BEYONCE, YOU JUST LIKER HER VERSION BETTER

157. Ludmila -
Why would anyone steal that song. Gawd, it stinks anyway. I never realized that Beyonce had such a lousy voice either. Most people hate that warble she puts in. You know, there use to be a time when you actually had to have talent to get something recorded.

158. Yahoo! Music User -
R U kiddin' me? This is the next Katy Perry. This is how you pay your dues. Who cares who 'sounds better'? She gets $$$ for B singing her song. WTF? Think for a sec. Who cares who sounds better? It's a business. Who can make you more is what counts. She'll have her moment (maybe) later

159. L. -
Hmmm...

First I heard this song was yesterday - the Beyonce version.

Gotta say that BC Jean kicks - really.

Yes, Beyonce made it all smooth and silky - BUT...but...BC makes it scrape like broken glass - she really does pull the emotion out of the song better than Beyonce did.

Just my take.

M.L.

160. Carol B -
Yes, BC Jean's is better. BC JEAN is talented and should go far with her career.
