If She...

Posted Wed Oct 15, 2008 11:51am PDT by Jordan Gracey in Reality Bites

Alright y’all, don’t shoot the messenger!

Let me just say that I like Beyoncé!  I think she’s a great performer, talented actress, savvy business woman and easy on the eyes.  I also respect how she doesn’t use the paparazzi to stay current, rather she relies on her artistry.  She's a total class act!

With that being said….

As you may already know, Beyoncé’s third solo album I Am… is due to drop November 18th.  Last week, her video for the lead track “If I Were A Boy” hit various media channels and was met with rave reviews and pleased fans everywhere.

However, grumblings also began that this song doesn’t belong to Beyoncé.  Before I jumped on the bandwagon I decided to do some digging and discover if this was real or rumour (‘cause we all know that for every fan there are at least a half dozen haters right?).

My findings:

Song credits for If I Were a Boy” are stated as Toby Gad and Beyoncé Knowles on Wikipedia.  (I had to check here as the album isn’t actually out yet).  After this I turned to iTunes…no luck.  The single isn’t up for sale yet, nor is the video.  Darn.  No fear, the Internet is a vast place, I was sure to find something else.   What did I find?  “If I Were A Boy,” recorded by a little 21 year-old who goes by the name of BC Jean

This California native is apparently the next generation star, from a musical family that has been associated with RCA Records.  For those of you not familiar with labels, RCA (or RCA Victor) is one of the flagship labels of Sony.  Beyoncé is signed to Columbia, which is now a premier subsidiary label of Sony.  Hmmmm......

Check it for yourself here

Sorry B!

Jay, please don’t come after me!

What do you guys make of this?

Well, when you just hear the song the first time without knowing who sung it, I would have to say the Beyonce's is more.. realistic and believable. :/

62. Laila -
Well, BC Jean just became next year`s top artist...great publicity stunt there!!

Dont hate

64. Friendlytom -
Hands down, BC Jean is MUCH BETTER!

65. MaBonzo -
I jus listened to the 2 songs and it doesn't not sound like Beyonce at all you can tell that it not her type of stuff..puffffffffffff

66. tricia.castell -
sorry guys i'm a pin head i was listening to the wrong track "leave it alone" i retract my comment

67. Yahoo! Music User -
what the hell is very succcessful person like Beyonce doing jacken BCJeans song when she is just trying to make it. Beyonce get your own songs and leave the little guys alone. she is pretty pathitic to such a thing. I just hope that people see this and not buy beyonces version and buy BC Jeans instead because she diserves all the credit to the song. I think BC Jean has a better voice anyway.

Publicity stunt, Planned? Both win, beyonce gets a single, BC gets publicity for her own career promotion.

I just heard the song about half an hour ago on my commute home from work and it was hard for me to believe that the singer was Beyonce. Not a typical Beyonce song, I guess. Haven't heard the other version yet.

It think we have beyonce's record company to blame on this one. They have to do the research that's why beyonce gives them a good cut. In any case, yes it is only fair for beyonce to give BC Jean her cut too.
If BC Jean couldn't make this songs famous then why not let beyonce take a crack at it?

From BC Jean's myspace page:

Q: So what are you doing now?
A: Right now I am perfecting my craft as a writer working with some great names in the business, such as producers, Toby Gad..."

SO he might have written the song, but it is wrong to credit Beyonce too, rather than BC Jean...

HANDS DOWN BC Jean's version is MUCH BETTER
Shame on Byonce for infringing..CHEAP...and did a lousy job

wow,my sis was a fan of her, but she did that so i don't know. But did she say she wrote it.maybe her manager said he did then it's maybe not her fault but i really can't do anything about it, but this is what most smart people know that these things will happin

74. Isaiah T -
Both versions sound a lot like that "What if God Was One of Us" song.

75. Soso -
wow she messed up the new version, B did sorry but my sis knows and she's over you!!!!!!!!!! BIG TIME!!!!!!!

76. mellisa s -
Yeah, BC is awesome! I like her. :)

Both versions are incredible! I will leave food for thouhgt....I know a lot about hockey. One thing the "experts", jornalists & pundits always do, is to compare the young talent to the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr and Patrick Roy (The holy trinty of hockey!) This is not only unfair, but borders on rediculous. The undue extra pressure that kind of comparison makes, can be too much for young talent to cope with and sometimes can lead to that player NOT developing to expectations. How does hockey compare to this arguement of which is better, beyonce or BC Jean? Beyonce, inspite of her young age, Has become a giant in the recording industry by starting off her carrer and develop it without comparisons to Aretha, Whitney or Mariah. She has the Grammies and other music awards to prove it! BC Jean is an incrdible young talent! I can't wait myself till I can listen to her Professional, debut release! So we shouldn't be putting undue pressure on her by saying that her version is better than Beyonces.....Its not. Not even close! IF you get it in her head, that she's better than the best, then she might stop striving to be better. Or worse, crumble under larger-than-life expectations! I wish BC Jean future success and Beyonce, continued success.

BC is actually good and original, Beyonce should go make another Austin Powers movie.

79. OMA -
I agree. Probably a publicity stunt to get BC Jean noticed. Her version is mush better than Beyonce.

80. Syn7 -
its a horrible song... did it ever occur that beyonces management may have paid for the song?
that is standard practice for pop stars... surely nobody is dumb enough to believe these people write all their own stuff...
