If She...

Posted Wed Oct 15, 2008 11:51am PDT by Jordan Gracey in Reality Bites

Alright y’all, don’t shoot the messenger!

Let me just say that I like Beyoncé!  I think she’s a great performer, talented actress, savvy business woman and easy on the eyes.  I also respect how she doesn’t use the paparazzi to stay current, rather she relies on her artistry.  She's a total class act!

With that being said….

As you may already know, Beyoncé’s third solo album I Am… is due to drop November 18th.  Last week, her video for the lead track “If I Were A Boy” hit various media channels and was met with rave reviews and pleased fans everywhere.

However, grumblings also began that this song doesn’t belong to Beyoncé.  Before I jumped on the bandwagon I decided to do some digging and discover if this was real or rumour (‘cause we all know that for every fan there are at least a half dozen haters right?).

My findings:

Song credits for If I Were a Boy” are stated as Toby Gad and Beyoncé Knowles on Wikipedia.  (I had to check here as the album isn’t actually out yet).  After this I turned to iTunes…no luck.  The single isn’t up for sale yet, nor is the video.  Darn.  No fear, the Internet is a vast place, I was sure to find something else.   What did I find?  “If I Were A Boy,” recorded by a little 21 year-old who goes by the name of BC Jean

This California native is apparently the next generation star, from a musical family that has been associated with RCA Records.  For those of you not familiar with labels, RCA (or RCA Victor) is one of the flagship labels of Sony.  Beyoncé is signed to Columbia, which is now a premier subsidiary label of Sony.  Hmmmm......

Check it for yourself here

Sorry B!

Jay, please don’t come after me!

What do you guys make of this?

ok, after listening to the song, this is what i thought.
There is no doubt what so ever in everyone one's mind that BC Jean own the song. But now u have to think, did she really write the song or was it written by Toby Gad Who later on decided to have someone well known and liked like Beyonce sing it?
I honestly think someone like Beyonce could have not only stolen the song, but sang it lyric after lyric. THIS JUST DOESN"T HAPPEN. Let’s wait till the album comes out, and if it turns out that she stole the song. First price and my heart goes to BC Jean. “You really did it girl, u r worth every penny and more you will get from the law suit

42. Davey Crockett -
very interesting. good to know. all things being equal, i like original artists-especially if the cover is exactly the same as the original (wtf?). fan of b's other stuff tho'

43. Kiababy -
BC's version is BEAUTIFUL!!! I hope she releases it - I'll run out and buy it in a heartbeat. Beyonce sucks.

44. mary -
byonce should admit that she is lazy and took the easy way out stealing someone elses song after all i guess she needs the money and the one she stole it from doesn't matter to her because she thinks nobody will find out that she stole it byonce should remember how hard it was for her at the beginning and just ask the girl if she could use her song and pay for it and give the girl who is the original singer her chance and help her out to get started as it clear the young girl who the song belongs tosings it better

I am a huge Beyoncé fan, but am pretty disappointed that she stooped so low. I do like BC's version better...

Actually if you really want to uncover the truth, the song belongs to non of the above, if Beyonces label purchased the song from the other girls label the label owns it, if you were to really check on who officialy wrote it you would see that neither of these gals had anything to do with it, and if they did it was a very small amount of time they put into the lyrics, which is not song writing, the instrumental music makes it a song the lyrics are poetry, and yup thats hoe the industry works, thay hype up superstars and buy good music from serious musicians who can write songs and buy it for fractions of what the celebrity superstar makes, its just made to look like people like Beyonce are responsible for creating the music they perform, they really just dont ever!

Beyonce should be ashamed of herself. The BC Jean's version is so much better. I hope Beyonce gets what's coming to her. Karma baby!!!

48. rachel -

49. Kayon -

Sorry guys going to have to disagree. Beyonce's version to me actually is better at least she prenounces her h's. Its not "err" lol its her. They both are very talented though I don't know why Beyonce is singing the same song as her, but if she is singing it, I am sure she has legal permission from the writer who isnt BC.

This happens all the time. Rihanna came out with NUMBER1/TIDE IS HIGH featuring Kardinal Official. Pussycat Dolls come out with the same song with Kardinal Official. Who cares!
Back in the 50s and 60s white people use to take the black people songs and make it theirs. Why is everyone acting like this is the first time it's happening. This shouldn't even be a topic. Actually the person who wrote the song can give it to whoever they want. Unless BC Jean wrote the song, then Beyonce will be in trouble or the other way around. Alot of singers use the same songs.
This is nothing new.

52. Angelika -
BC Jean definately sings it with more soul, and you can HEAR that it is her song!

Poor Beyonce!

53. Sexie -
well beyonce couldn't have exactly stole the
song, i mean before a artist can even
sing a song that was created by another
originally they have to get permission to
sing or re-write the song, take weird al for
example, he re-writes alot of people songs
& makes it his own, he has to get permission
there was only 1 artist weird al asked to re-write a song and that artist said no (that artist was prince who said no!)

idiot. says mek u own, dats teefin

55. Yahoo! Music User -
Dream Girls has now become reality (again, must have been a foreshadowing for this day)

56. John K -
I like the BC Jean version better. This girl has a great future.

57. Kiababy -
The best thing that could come out of this is BC gets tons of attention from this and becomes famous.....

58. Bertha B -
tsk tsk tsk - give regognition (and credit) where it is due - bc jean rocks - hope she is ready for the ride

59. tricia.castell -
This is weak argument...artiste have songs with similar or the same names all the time. For example, Rihanna and Madonna's "Take a bow" the title may be the same but the lyrics are clearly different, the same applies here. Stealing the song would imply the same lyrics and this is not the case.

"immature poets immitate, mature poets steal."

not a real suprise... its hard being on top...
i only support indy efforts... its the only way to stay grounded in the scene...
