If She...

Posted Wed Oct 15, 2008 11:51am PDT by Jordan Gracey in Reality Bites

Alright y’all, don’t shoot the messenger!

Let me just say that I like Beyoncé!  I think she’s a great performer, talented actress, savvy business woman and easy on the eyes.  I also respect how she doesn’t use the paparazzi to stay current, rather she relies on her artistry.  She's a total class act!

With that being said….

As you may already know, Beyoncé’s third solo album I Am… is due to drop November 18th.  Last week, her video for the lead track “If I Were A Boy” hit various media channels and was met with rave reviews and pleased fans everywhere.

However, grumblings also began that this song doesn’t belong to Beyoncé.  Before I jumped on the bandwagon I decided to do some digging and discover if this was real or rumour (‘cause we all know that for every fan there are at least a half dozen haters right?).

My findings:

Song credits for If I Were a Boy” are stated as Toby Gad and Beyoncé Knowles on Wikipedia.  (I had to check here as the album isn’t actually out yet).  After this I turned to iTunes…no luck.  The single isn’t up for sale yet, nor is the video.  Darn.  No fear, the Internet is a vast place, I was sure to find something else.   What did I find?  “If I Were A Boy,” recorded by a little 21 year-old who goes by the name of BC Jean

This California native is apparently the next generation star, from a musical family that has been associated with RCA Records.  For those of you not familiar with labels, RCA (or RCA Victor) is one of the flagship labels of Sony.  Beyoncé is signed to Columbia, which is now a premier subsidiary label of Sony.  Hmmmm......

Check it for yourself here

Sorry B!

Jay, please don’t come after me!

What do you guys make of this?

BC's version is more believable and really has a lot of emotion to it. First time to hear her sing and I'm already a fan. What the world is happening here? A pro recording a song of a newcomer. I thought it's the other way around. Well, I can't blame Beyonce doing this. I think it's a nice song. But I guess what she did (stealing?)is nothing professional at all. But looking it on the other way, I guess it has benefited BC. I will not know that BC exists without Beyonce recording the song.

i like beyonces version but yea they should give props to bc cause she actually wrote the song but her voice isent very good (no offence)its to pitchy

BC Jean sounds WAY better... there's heart & soul in her version... beyonce is so commercial..ugh i never could stand her she's so irritating!!

24. Michael K -
Originality Hmpphht for Beyonce....I hope BC Jean gets paid for her own song

Both versions are good, and I'm sure that BC Jean sold the rights to let a big star sing it. She would have been crazy not too. That's how song writers get paid, and maybe even get famous. At least she lucked out and got one of the biggest names out there singing her song. Good for you and good luck!

its true that she got this song off of another singer
EXCEPT!
its ALSO true that she BOUGHT it.

Since when is it stealing to use someone elses song.. How does this writer know they didn't work a deal. How dumb is this. Its a silly statement to assume that Beyonce is claiming all the song rights. She may not have to under the contractual arrangement to publish Jeans name.

I like BC Jean's version better also!

First off i think the song is pretty horrible, but BC's is the least horrible. As for Beyonce writing her own songs, i highly doubt she has ever written her own song. Most pop stars just do a voice over, collect 1 cent per download and have to make all their money on tour.

I like both versions...but i think Beyonce's version sounds better....music artists remake songs all the time...but the minute Beyonce does it it blows up...atleast BC Jean gets paid for it...BC Jean said that she was going to still put out the song on her own album...so basically we will have the best of both

If Beyoncé stole that song then shame on her...

BC Jean's version is much more heartfelt and real.

Oh my... She's been in the entertainment industry this long and she has to snag a 21 year old girls song...wow...how disappointing.

Holy crap!!! I hope this isn't for real, for Beyonce's sake. But for the record, BC Jean's version is 10x better!

and bc jean looks hot

I am a huge Beyonce fan..even went to her concert, but girl what is this all about?
Well BC Jean must have given Beyonce rights to this song so before we all go slander the girl, let's get all the facts!

I thought I was gonna buy B's album, maybe I should buy BC Jean's album cos its cool, I didn't even know her

37. Insight -
Can't say I heard of BC Jean before this but I'd say she has a bright future ahead.
I just hate it when successful people walk all over other people for their gain.

38. M -
do any of you people know what goes on in any of their personal lives??? maybe u should all shut up and concentrate on your own lives...who cares????

39. duper -
Yep... BC's is definitely better... great website too!

That is a bowl of crap!!!!
Maybe it is BC who is trying to hook onto BK's coat tails. Then again, we will all see who is doing what to whom.
