If She...

Posted Wed Oct 15, 2008 11:51am PDT by Jordan Gracey in Reality Bites

Alright y’all, don’t shoot the messenger!

Let me just say that I like Beyoncé!  I think she’s a great performer, talented actress, savvy business woman and easy on the eyes.  I also respect how she doesn’t use the paparazzi to stay current, rather she relies on her artistry.  She's a total class act!

With that being said….

As you may already know, Beyoncé’s third solo album I Am… is due to drop November 18th.  Last week, her video for the lead track “If I Were A Boy” hit various media channels and was met with rave reviews and pleased fans everywhere.

However, grumblings also began that this song doesn’t belong to Beyoncé.  Before I jumped on the bandwagon I decided to do some digging and discover if this was real or rumour (‘cause we all know that for every fan there are at least a half dozen haters right?).

My findings:

Song credits for If I Were a Boy” are stated as Toby Gad and Beyoncé Knowles on Wikipedia.  (I had to check here as the album isn’t actually out yet).  After this I turned to iTunes…no luck.  The single isn’t up for sale yet, nor is the video.  Darn.  No fear, the Internet is a vast place, I was sure to find something else.   What did I find?  “If I Were A Boy,” recorded by a little 21 year-old who goes by the name of BC Jean

This California native is apparently the next generation star, from a musical family that has been associated with RCA Records.  For those of you not familiar with labels, RCA (or RCA Victor) is one of the flagship labels of Sony.  Beyoncé is signed to Columbia, which is now a premier subsidiary label of Sony.  Hmmmm......

Check it for yourself here

Sorry B!

Jay, please don’t come after me!

What do you guys make of this?

I like BC Jean's version better.

2. the truth -
what do you expect. big labels rip off smaller artists all the time.

3. dave -
Sounds like BC Jean is going to be coming into some royalty money. Pretty sad when someone at Beyonce's level has to steal to stay on top.

4. Yahoo! Music User -
I think it's a publicity stunt that will work wonders on Bc Jean career. Since
is very famous, & with fame comes alot of love & hate, many people who don't like Beyonce will agree that Bc Jean's version is better & it could be but that's not the point. The point is that this Bc Jean's girl will get fame out of this.

that sucks, I don't like B's version, I much prefer the other version. I hope they make an attempt to make a correction to this and give the original artist props.

not surprised....after all i see no real talent for beyonce as the only thing she really has going for her is her body uhmuhm if you know waht i mean

BC Jean has my buck for this song!

16. 2shirts -
I'm totally with you. The BC Jean's version has a lot more of emotion to it.

Why would Beyoncé take away a hit song from a new artist, who trying to get started?......I guess when your that famous you get lazy & want the easy money?

Both versions are good, however BC Jean's is my choice!

When Byonce's song "if i were a boy" came out i played it like mad coz i like it a lot, but then i heard this other Version on Utube too along with "B"s version and liked BC Jean version a lot better i thought that from the moment i heard the song it had an edgier side. How can they do that to some one else is beyond me.like they say "karma" is Karma. it will come back at you.

I have to agree, I too like BC Jean's version much better. It also seems that Beyonce didn't make this song her own and sang it the same way as BC Jean.
This happened when Leanne Rhymes brought out her song "How do I live".
Trisha Yearwood ended up doing the same song as well. I hope that BC Jean
gets large out of this one. Just listening to her music you can tell it wont be long till we hear about her in the mainstream.

beyonce, i'm so bummed. i'm going to boycott your cd & get BC Jean!
