Canadian Idol: More Harmonica!

Posted Wed Jul 9, 2008 6:41am PDT by Jordan Gracey in Reality Bites

It’s always the second half of the competing group that wins me over and tonight’s Idol was no exception.  On Monday night’s Idol, I’d say that there were two strong performances, tonight, I’d say a solid six.

After tonight’s performances I think it’s pretty clear whose going to make it into the Top 10.  Well, if I can be completely candid, I think we already know who the Top 6 are.  Then again, I always like being surprised.

Stealing the spotlight and leaving everyone in the shadows are the Pigott brothers.  Seriously, these two are setting the bar for the competition and are pushing each other to their musical limits.  More cowbell?  Whatever, that’s so old school!  More harmonica is where it’s at baby!  The Pigott brothers are bringing blues back with a new school feel and who can resist it?  Oliver performed a great bluesy rendition of “Lean on Me”.

The judges didn’t have a single bad thing to say, obviously, but suggested Oliver draw more from his blues roots and incorporate a harmonica, to really push his performance over the edge.  Moments later, little brother Sebastian came out on that Idol stage with his baby blue eyes, gallons of sex appeal and oh…A HARMONICA and just brought it home!  If you didn’t see it, then you really missed a great Idol moment!  I have also never wished I was a mic stand so badly in my life.

Needing more of a Sebastian fix post show, I went hunting.  In case you too want a little more from this Pigott brother I have a present for you here.

Quirky Earl is up next and while he kept the energy up, he channeled it in a completely different and odd (yet perfectly fitting for Earl) way.  I like Earl.  He’s just having such a great time on this show and that’s really all that can be said about him.  Oh, and that he could possibly be the long-lost brother of Marianas Trench lead singer Josh Ramsay?

Need more evidence? They have the same dance moves Watch This!

Thoughts?

I blame song selection for Mitch’s less than stellar performance.  Mitch has all the pieces that should in theory make him a strong contender for the winner of the Idol title.  In practice though there’s something missing that I still can’t put my finger on.  With that being said, tonight I’d like to point out that falsetto and lay some blame there!  Mitch, next week, please avoid the falsetto!  Please!  Thank you!

Gary is just “given ‘er” as Sass (or as Gary referred to her, “sweet Sassy my lassy”) so eloquently put it!  I for one think it’s time for someone to call Chad Kroeger and tell him that the front man for the latest addition to the Theory of a Nickelfault Trench-Drive circle of bands is on Idol!  Honestly, get Gary a Kroeger-approved backing band and the rest would be Juno-winning history.

Katherine really brought her A-game tonight.  She took on Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield”.  In spite of the fact that she rushed the lyrics, her vocal performance was strong.  If you’re someone who has tried to sing Pat Benetar anywhere other than in the shower, you now how challenging it is.  Katherine still isn’t commanding enough to really own a stage.  She would be an awesome addition to a girl group though I think.  Canadian Girlicious anyone?  CTV, consider it!  I get producer’s credits though!

The last hopeful I want to spend any time on is Drew.  Oh Drew, I was really rooting for you.  I was even excited to see you take on Hoobastank’s “The Reason”.  Everyone loved this song, which was why it rocketed to #1 on almost every rock/ singles chart world wide.  There was an undeniable, appealing sweetness to this song.  But somehow, when Drew broke into his rendition, all the lyrical sweetness was lost.  Which in the end robbed me of my sweet feelings for Drew.  Sorry dude!

I think it’s safe to say that the Pigott brothers don’t have anything to worry about in the next round of eliminations.
