The Idol Is....
I would just like to start by saying that while I may not have accurately predicted the two remaining hopefuls, I did accurately pick one from the start and that was Theo. From the Idol auditions to now the final show, Theo has been consistently strong. A classically trained musician with an ear for pop music, Theo could possibly be the best Idol hopeful to take the CTV stage.
I had a casual conversation with a SONY rep that will be on the “Idol team” the other night at the John Legend listening party and we both felt that to be an Idol hopeful would mean functioning under a level of anxiety that I hope to never understand. To put yourself out there for all of Canada to critique and judge takes a level of confidence that I’m sure I don’t have. So for that, I think the Top 10 should be applauded.
How were the remaining two hopefuls feeing pre-finale?

The show started with the good ol’ Idol medley, bringing back the Top 10 for one last hoorah. For the most part it was an appropriate reminder that the final two stand heads above six, maybe seven of the top ten. Drew still hits it out of the park though and watching him tonight reminded me of how upset I was that he was sent home. But after reminding myself that sometimes it’s better to not have your career controlled by a reality TV franchise I felt better.
It was a season about musicians according to Zack Werner. I think it’s safe to say that between the musicianship of the Pigott brothers, Drew, Theo and even Amberly and Mitch, that there was a lot of genuine talent. However, had the Top 20 been as solid as the judges seem to belive, we would probably have had a very different season.
With a whole two hours before we find out who the next Canadian Idol is, CTV packed the time with numerous high profile performances. From Hedly and Jully Black to John Legend and Mariah Carey, it was a packed show.
Tonight’s most appropriate guest performers were “Hedley”. Jacob Hoggard, the band’s front man is easily the most successful Canadian to have ever been attached to the Idol franchise. While Hoggard may not have won (he placed 3rd during the second season), he achieved his dreams of being a chart topping musician when he formed his band with bassist Tommy Mac, guitarist Dave Rosin, and drummer Chris Crippin.
Performing their new single “Old School”, you suddenly felt like you were watching a high school graduation on the O.C (or 90210 the new class). Then you remember that this is the end of a very pivotal chapter for ten young Canadians and the beginning of a new life and dream for one lucky young man and then it seemed quite fitting. Sorry for getting all emo on you, but it’s pretty amazing when you think about it.
Jully Black took the stage and proved that she’d probably be a better judge than Idol correspondent. That girl can work a stage and man, can she belt it out.
John Legend performed his latest “Green Light” and if the audiences reaction was any indication, his latest album has all the makings of a hit.
Making her debut on Canadian TV was Mariah Carey who imitates a mannequin really well on stage. She’s lucky she can sing because the posing gets rather boring after the first minute of her performance. She's no Beyonce!
